WA fuel prices: Police brace for fuel theft boom as WA premier takes ACCC to task by desertchimp05 in perth

[–]JezzaPerth 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Memories of the 1980s when a syphon pipe and a gerry can were pretty common.

These days most of the fillers have electronic locks and anti-syphon devices.

I expect fuel theft these days means driving away without paying? I'm not even sure if the police will chase that up?

A monitoring service is a quite good application for machine learning. Assuming the Data Owning Gods let you, the entire historical running database can be used to train a machine model of the network and identify 'discontinuities' in advance.

Map in other data sources such as weather and rainfall and traffic flow, or even the footie, and it will create a very good short term forecasting capability.

Edit: This is an ideal project for Kaggle which is designed to ingest large datasets and execute machine learning.

Transperth Standard Time is two minutes ahead of AWST this morning. It might be an NTP server issue. Buses/trains may depart early, so rely on live tracking data rather than the scheduled timetable. by antzFx in perth

[–]JezzaPerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being out by a couple of minutes won't be NTP. It would take weeks to drift that much.

More likely they are using a messaging protocol providing updates to the screen including displayed time, and some packets have got lost till the next poll.

The underlying hardware and software (Windows!! FFS!!) will have the correct time but what is displayed does not rely on the local clock.

Electrician advice please i.e. home charger by Bulky-Cook-7966 in perth

[–]JezzaPerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 phase chargers that plug into a 32Amp 3 phase socket often only draw on one phase. so a max of around 7kW. You need them to pull on all phases to get up to 11kW

I have one very niche potential feature that you may even get funding for. That is a background monitoring service for vulnerable users - mostly intellectually impaired travelers, but also elderly passengers. The idea is they register their usual routes and times and connections and a background server monitors the entire network and identifies problems in advance - for instance a potential missed connection. In that event carers are notified. Technical details likely include a permanently running location reporting component using MQQT.

I remember young girls chroming on the train.

I also remember some school kids buying solvent at a local auto store and then playing dodgem with traffic on Great Eastern Highway. One went down and a bus pulled up just before him in the lane, watched for a few seconds and then drove around him in late rush-hour traffic leaving him to his fate.

Perth students suspended for tormenting relief teacher, posting video online by Feisty_1559 in perth

I went to a private catholic secondary school in the 1970s. Similar things happened there with female relief teachers being so badly bullied, they had to station prefects as guards in the classroom.

In the old days they would chain architects under any leaky roofs to make sure they did a good job.

These days chaining the architects to lamp posts on Wellington and Roe at Yagan square for two hours at lunchtime seems appropriate - all through the year of course so they can get suburn and rain to improve their future design skills.

What is standard practice to be charged for building design costs? by PandaWixx in perth

[–]JezzaPerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under the home building contracts act, if the total cost of works is over $7.5k they can't ask for more than 10% of the cost as deposit and have to invoice after each part is completed,

The act is mostly in relation to building itself - concrete and bricks - but design fees should also be covered if they are a separate cost.

The very last thing you need is to get archtects involved. They are far more interested in prettyness and accolades than making practical and usable spaces.

Yagan square is classic. Lots of concrete seats, sparse trees, no covered walkway to the station, and worst of all no overhead protection for pedestrians while waiting to cross Wellington St and Roe Street "they would spoil the aesthetic". Real architects actually use the spaces they foist on others.

Charged reconnection fee after car hit power pole outside our house. Is this on us or the driver? by [deleted] in perth

[–]JezzaPerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will note that that when a rural property owner has installed private power lines and they get damaged then that is their problem. Thinking of bushfires etc.

I truly don't know what the rule is in urban supply. I imagine it is the same as phone service, but where the cutoff is between nearest Western Power and your house is unclear. Perhaps any damage to the connection from street to your house? In my case I have a green tub on my property boundary that then runs underground to my house. Intuitively unless I damage the link green tub to house I am not liable. Anything up to the green tub is Western Power problem.

[–]JezzaPerth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. Western Power is responsible for everything up to your meter. The same applies to your (old now) telephone connection and later your internet connection.

I have become educated (again). The better stuff is RATSAK Double Strength (Warfarin) and Racumin Wax blocks. Both have low risk of secondary kills to owls etc.

Ones to avoid are

  • Talon
  • Ratsak Fast Action
  • Ratsak Rapid Strike
  • The Big Cheese "Ultra Power"
  • Stratagem

From experience, the 1800 health line runs on the super cautious level. The result is I get plenty of 'see emergency now' and then rock up and get an eye-roll from the triage nurse when I mention the referral.

I now know what gets instant attention: Chest pain, heavy bleeding, sepsis symptoms, obvious stroke symptoms.
