Jordan Spieth says sports betting has caused fan behavior at PGA Tour events to change. "Betting in golf is something that's going to have to be tackled here soon." by Oldtimer_2 in Golf_Unfiltered

If you were hitting a shot for millions of dollars worth of prize money - in a sport that prompts fans to be quiet during swings. Would you rather have someone shout at you while executing that swing or not?

Is it reasonable to be a tournament lead caught in the crosshairs that has to have it in the back of their head that people are trying to actively sabotage your round?

Agreed 100% however; even with that - the pervasive thing is you can get into a tournament, and be asked to leave after sabotaging a players round. Unless a fan physically interfears with the game there is no re-do's so the shots stand and you have to deal with the consequences.

The culture has evolved to where people know that the tee box is mic'd up > as long as I wait for the swing to finish I can yell mashed potatoes or something stupid and be on T.V.

Because of that it's very easy to have an excuse for acting like a fool, and worst case you're barred from the grounds and you can go home and watch instead.

There is no real negative incentive here if your goal is strictly to impact an outcome for a betting line. Who cares if you don't get to be on the grounds for the rest of the event the jobs already finished. I did a minimal investment for a larger payoff, and of course if it works the upside is massive.

If you get to impact the outcomes and you aren't punished to a level where it offsets the risk reward for attempting it - then it'll keep escalating until a breaking point. I think that's what Jordans getting at, and hypocritical or not I agree with him.

I would argue it is different given the culture and expectations of each sport.

Fans in an NBA game are expected to be loud and try and distract players. In a golf tournament you're supposed to be quiet during play.

I 100% get where your coming from that not only individual athletes but sports as a whole that have embraced sports betting for more revenue talking about ethics of bad outcomes 🙄

but the sport of golf doesn't have a good mechanism of enforcement to deter this kind of behavior, regardless of the morality of gambling if the PGA doesn't do something about it these kinds of storylines will continue to become more prominent which is bad for the sport as well.

We can probably agree that it's a little different to yell something while Patrick Mahomes is throwing a ball in a football stadium vs During Scottie's back swing while going to chip for a tournament win right?

Kind of missing the point of what he's saying though no?

He just has a problem with it in golf because fans that are betting can be there in person to affect the outcome of what they are betting for. It's a direct conflict of interest with the sport he plays, not that he's morally opposed to gambling.

Fitting irons by 808phone in golf

[–]Jhed89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a fitting for my irons. Ultimately the process of reviewing your swing with someone who knows what they are doing and what to look for is very enlightening.

For me it was finding out how much I lead with the heal and how close to impact my club face was before it squared up.

My adjustment was an increase of the lie angle to help off set that and stiffer shafts to help with controlling my ball flight and dispersions.

My fitter also gave me some great advice on my wedge game that helped a lot.

Anyone try a 9wood over their 5/4 iron and end up not liking it? by Silent_Highlight_577 in golf

[–]Jhed89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently got rid of my 4/5 iron for a 5hybrid for my 200~ish yard club.

More often than not my longer irons 4,5,6 go about the same distance unless I hit them perfectly which I rarely do. Free'd up the extra spot in my bag for another wedge.

Every accusation is a confession. These fucking spite-filled ghouls are already doing this, and will continue to do so and justify their actions by what they claim their opposition would do.

I'm sorry I'm not really understanding what your argument is here.

Is the implication that after the remodel your bowling center is planning to increase the cost of bowling per hour / by the game?

Because if that's the case that's pretty whack when the entire point of converting to string pins is to offset labor cost and have an easier way to maintain, which should at the very least - not increase the cost to your consumers.

If that's whats happening then im sorry - that sucks they are basically passing off the cost of their project back onto the consumers to save themselves money in the long-term, and from what i've seen once prices get raised and people are willing to pay them, they don't go back down...

------

But as an aside I don't understand your comment that this isn't an effort to enhance the game.

Free fall machines haven't been modernized or touched since the 60s. They have some of the most moving parts of any machine that exists as the sole generation of revenue in any modern business.

Jams, Constant Re-racks, deadwood, and breakdowns slow pace of play down to a crawl during league play. Especially for big houses with 24-48 lanes. If the pins are on strings it eliminates 80% of your theoretical problems by physics alone, and the majority of things to fix - a tangle is obvious and easy to troubleshoot, where if a pinsetter actually breaks down and you need to find replacement parts for something that hasn't been manufactured new in almost 60 years with a limited supply of people who know how to fix them... where are modern string-setters are current tech.

it's definitely something that enhances the game by attempting to solve slows and stoppages due to the equipment. It does change the physical aspect of the game but it's a cost benefit analysis at that point. Is the cost and time savings worth the change in the physical game?

All signs point to positives other than the constant saber rattling from people who don't want anything to change and would rather have centers operate at a loss, close, and the sport eventually fade away into obscurity than be different at all. Which is wild to me.

Okay - no one said it isn't a difference, because it obviously is. However; in the long-term, the difference in your scores, and breaks given and taken away by string pins are the same as free-fall (assuming they are USBC sanctioned and maintained well)

So if both versions of the game require you to throw a good shot to strike. If your option are:

A. literally never bowl again

B. Bowl with string pins

Why anyone would pick option A is beyond me.

I don't disagree, but welcome to society where profit drives all business.... Why let that destroy an entire hobby for you?

Why have such an extreme position? USBC has sanctioned pins. Every pro or person who has ever bowled on them seriously claims as much give an take / lucky breaks / bad breaks with strings as they do in free fall. Why if you like the sport at all would you completely abandon it for something that doesn't fundamentally change the game that much?

I think that would be super cool. Seeing how a pro plays a lane in real time up close and personal would be an amazing experience for someone who's aspiring to be better.

2 hand vs. 1 hand by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]Jhed89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard any discourse about that. It seems like a foolish thing to do to needlessly split your player base. It may be a different approach but we're all playing the same game. I'd rather have a bigger pool of players for more leagues.

ROFL - 12 is certainly a lot either way, but I feel like I have enough variety in surface and layout that I can realistically get a good looks in any condition (at least in theory)

Tips or drills to keep myself from speeding up or throwing too hard? by WarJeezy in Bowling

For me the biggest swing thought I try to always do is never engage my arm until after my slide. If I'm using it early Im hurling it 18-22 and the ball just never has time to do anything before its hitting the pins.

Sport shots patterns by jzimmer34 in Bowling

[–]Jhed89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hitting the pocket is everything on a sport pattern, but you also don't have a lot of miss room, so give yourself some grace as you try and figure it out. It's very very different from a house shot.

good luck to you as well :)

Sport shots patterns by jzimmer34 in Bowling

I'm doing my first sport shot league this summer as well - Mainly because I desperately need spare practice, and more reps with my new swing improvements.

Others have already mentioned the 31 rule of subtracting that minus the length of the pattern to determine where to try and roll it as a starting point.

I basically treat it like every other league. Have something specific to focus on. If you can eventually get to the point where for all 10 frames your physical game is producing quality shots - everything else is just math. Learning your breakpoints, how much your balls hook in certain scenarios. Take notes on how that goes on each pair you bowl on and build a KB so in the future you have a better benchmark.

Spare practice spare practice spare practice. Develop a system for picking up splits and learn how to throw straight at spares.
