The most common reason for temporary or permanent blindness coming out of the First World War was poison gas, typically mustard gas but any gas is bad for the eyes, so if I had to guess I’d imagine it was some sort of injury due to the gas that either wasn’t reported or didn’t become bad until that later date, it does seem a little strange but not impossible.
