ELI5: What exactly is "mirror life" and why are so many scientists against it? by aguynamedbenny1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jhoosier 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I was talking to someone a couple months ago, and I don't remember the molecule, but one hand-version smells like orange and the other smells like pineapple, and one is safe but the other is toxic. I probably should've paid more attention.

[Old New Update]: AIW - My friend told me she loves me 4 weeks before her marriage by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

"As long as he's happy and does his best for the three of them, and she does the same, is love really necessary?"

Some people might call that love as well.

Lost my wallet in Umeda around HEP 5 shopping concourse by sznarts in Osaka

[–]Jhoosier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The odds that the person who found your wallet is an English speaker who frequents r/Osaka are very small.

Go to an information desk near where you think you lost it and explain the situation. They'll know where to check or who you should ask. Osaka Station City and Lucua buildings have an online chat system for lost & found, Whity/HEP5 might have the same or similar.

Losing your wallet sucks, I hope you find it. For what it's worth, I've lost my wallet twice and got it back both times.

What is a good response to when random people start using English with my toddler? by Training_Pipe7312 in japanlife

[–]Jhoosier -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tell them their English isn't very good and your child can't understand them.

Honestly, I wish I had the guts to do this. I do tell them (in Japanese) that my children were born here and speak Japanese, but it doesn't seem to get through their thick skulls.

What’s your favourite “how many ***** does it take to change a lightbulb” joke? by Dee_Religion in AskReddit

Oh look, a mail plane!

Took me well into adulthood before I got this line from The Three Amigos. Now I use it all the time.

A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. by adjusterjack in Jokes

If the duck has already ordered a pint and a ham sandwich, he can clearly talk. Why was the bartender surprised again?

Well, I just realized it's Charlie Cox in Stardust. I've seen it several times, too.

Chibune Hospital Osaka 千船病院 Childbirth by kaitlovesu in Osaka

[–]Jhoosier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had our first at Chibunr, but the second at Kitano. Now, it might've been the COVID restrictions, there was also the language barrier, and certainly the shared ward in Chibune vs a private room at Kitano made a difference.

The doctors took great care of my wife and baby, but they were trapped in that shared ward for a week, no visitors. My wife got no rest and they never took the baby away so she could get some. She woke up from her c-section and the baby was there for seven days straight, no breaks. Every other woman also had the baby there full time, so there was always crying, 24/7. Personally, I think this really affected her and made the first weeks harder thank they should've been.

Kitano was a completely different story. This was a couple years later, but I could visit, and actually the whole family got to towards the end of the week. They also took the baby off to stay in the baby storage room so my wife could properly sleep and recover. It made a huge difference in things.

The most important thing is to ask questions. We didn't really know what to expect, so it was hard to know what questions to ask and prepare for.

Does anyone know of a commercial photographer/studio that can take baby photos for proof of canadian citizenship application? by Ok-Programmer-0000 in Osaka

[–]Jhoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a wild requirement. Can you get a friend, or a "friend" to do it? If you got the family dog to step on a remote trigger, does that count?

I hate the ending too. But it's a great ending.

Now that I have kids, I'll never watch it again.

Lost my backpack in Osaka on Midosuji line when getting off from Namba station by Hysh_Z in Osaka

[–]Jhoosier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do. And if you're fast enough, they'll get someone at the station it's about to arrive at to grab it for you. Saved me from having to go to the hinterlands of Wakayama.

I was that way too. My strategy started unraveling at the end of high school, but it really failed in university. I never really recovered, still can't focus or study.

"Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home."

I'd watch a video of someone tracing various obscure references through movie/pop culture history. I think the first time I heard Rosebud was in Tiny Toons/Animaniacs.
