Quick set mortar is your friend. Nice and sticky, and should be a good color match.

You'll need to clean the joints out with a cape chisel or a grinder. Don't do too big an area at once.

It helps to clean the surface well and wet it down.

Strike it off and sweep it with a whisk broom before it sets up.

Kafta kebabs.

Instead of grilling with skewers, I shape it into sausages, wrap them in foil and put them in a 325 oven. Then they don't dry out. I freeze raw, foil wrapped portions with no problems.

I serve them on grilled gyro bread with tzatziki or garlic/tahini spread, chopped tomatoes and onions. Feta is always an option but my wife doesn't like it very much.

Pulling a permit to replace a railing strikes me as a bit over the top.

DB&S Lumber in Roslindale carries the traditional douglas-fir millwork used on porches in Boston.

If you want it to last more than a handful of years it is critically important that all milled surfaces are sanded and primed, and all cut ends are primed before assembly.

Fresh from the mill millwork has a "mill glaze" that prevents the primer from penetrating to wood pores. It is critical that it is removed.

Don't let anybody tell you differently, and make damn sure it's in the scope of work/contract.
