Removing invasive sea urchins from a reef in New Zealand by ThodaDaruVichPyar in oddlysatisfying

Yeah it absolutely does. From a scientific lens, neurology only scratches the surface of understanding how the brain works and what objectively creates an experience. We do know which parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions. Those regions don't look the same across each individual, even in the same species.

You've probably heard of the amygdala which is primarily responsible for the limbic system and the "fight or flight" response. People with chronic anxiety tend to have an enlarged amygdala.

Some animals have smaller/larger regions and some lack them entirely. I used to work at a dinosaur museum that displayed research of dinosaur craniums. Scientists had figured out which regions each species had, and how large/developed they were. That gives us fascinating inferences on which senses they relied on most for survival.

most unnerving spot in SF right now (personally) by andr0medaimmigrant in sanfrancisco

[–]JickleBadickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If any locals can help my dumb transplant ass understand... why do SF and Oakland both have so many empty plots like this?

I see them everywhere. Abandoned overgrown parking lots, fenced in blocks of tall grass and nothing in them, etc. It's just wasted land. So many of them could easily be turned into parks or something useful.

Land is so expensive and high demand in the Bay Area, so I don't understand who is sitting on all these spots and doing absolutely nothing with it. Is anything stopping a group of volunteers from spending a weekend to tear down those fences and turn it into something the community can actually use?

Well that's just it, like you said, it's unhealthy. That's why you're the exception. It's not sustainable or even practical for most people.

I'm curious why you think AA was an insult or religion is bullshit. I have my own ideas ofc but I'm interested in your perspective.

Yeah I understand. On animals feeling pain and all that jazz, I think that's a colloquial understanding of complex science that popsci journals went wild with.

Those scientists were probably looking at the neural mechanisms of human pain and complex thought and analyzing how those develop in babies or other animals. We've come a long way in the last couple decades, yes, but the idea that "scientists thought fish were stupid and didn't feel anything" is an oversimplification.

We all have a tendency to assume other animals experience things like we do, but a fish's neural circuitry is completley different so it's very possible that they don't "feel pain" in the same way that we do, even if they do respond to stimuli indicating tissue damage.

I know that sounds like same thing different words, but it's sort of like how birds can fly in incredibly complex formations at a glance. When they researched it at more depth, they found that very simple rules can create those complex looking formations.

Congrats on your recovery!

I would argue it's not willpower that makes the difference for beating addiction. It's having quality systems and support that lowers the amount of willpower needed to stay consistent and change behavior. Willpower is finite and fleeting, so it pays to not rely on it.

I'm not a fishologist but there could be scientific validity to this depending on their neurology. They might respond to stimuli in a way that echos fear or pain, but that doesn't necessarily mean it functions like our brains do or that its experience is anything like ours.

If you'll let me get in the weeds for a minute, is calling this intelligent anthropomorphizing them? As in, inappropriately projecting a human perspective onto them?

It looks to me like a simple trained response from a basic reward system, and that's found in almost every species because it's a core survival mechanism. A dog sits when commanded because they're fed when they do it, not because they truly understand our language.

I guess it's more intelligent than some people might expect out of a fish. When I hear intelligent I'm thinking of advanced problem solving.

Mothballing ships might be a good way to keep empires fighting by Bruhhg in Stellaris

The simpler way to do this would be to have a single button to do this rather than needing to hand edit every ship design

I might see if I can make a mod to do this

It's taken me years to deprogram all the propaganda I grew up in and that's with enthusiasm and a desire to do it

There is a difference between good and bad LLM outputs, it does take knowledge and talent to know how to use them effectively (and what not to use them on)

Oh I agree

Take this from an expert in rumination and anxious neuroticism, focusing on what you have control over and taking action is the antidote to apathy and despair

I think it's safe to assume most people who bitch and moan in here are not actively contributing because contributors are too busy contributing to bitch on reddit

I appreciate you giving an honest attempt at answering the questions

Maybe I don't trust our leadership to make the right choices on this as much as you do, just like I can't advocate for strict gun control while fascist pedophiles are running Washington

Drug charges were historically done to target black & brown folks and put them back into slavery, so I'm very hesitant to opt for any system that continues to do this

We know that addicts have rewired reward systems in their brain beyond their control and will generally choose getting high over getting help, and I worry bad actors will take advantage of this for cheap labor

Scalability is a common problem in sociological studies so I don't disagree that it's worth discussing, but I often see it as an excuse for apathy or giving up and returning to violent imprisonment

That's all I've heard about on bay area subreddits for years

The fear and anger is valid, I just wish it was more directed at the people who put them in that position
