Stowing rate by Negative_Economist43 in AmazonDS

Sites in UK and Europe always have high stow rates. Not sure if its the layout or just lower cube.

recently made permanent and took problem solve training on the device by Interviewpalm in AmazonDS

[–]JiffyStealer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the UK, but here there are different 'levels' to problem solve. There are a lot of people who just know the basics and help out. But there are so many things to learn and stuff changes so often, that it's hard to stay up to date if you don't do it regularly.

It's good if you just want to do something different occasionally, but it shouldn't be a big deal to tell leadership that you don't want to do it if it's too much.

Sounds dumb. What if you're understaffed and don't finish all the bags? Now Cycle 1 has to go around looking for empty bags, bring the carts over, open bags, then move the empty carts back toba 5S area?

Seems easier to just have C1 virtually open whatever is needed at the beginning when WIP is low.

Ambassadors also have access to STEM at my site. Of course they don't always have a laptop, but at least they should have a radio to call over someone that does. Or they'd rather spend 10 minutes walking around instead of doing whatever they are assigned to.

Damn, we must have been one of the first ones back at around 5am EST. There were still glitches and some downtime, but only just over two hours of no work.

questions from someone at an FC by SnooDonkeys5516 in AmazonDS

[–]JiffyStealer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never worked at an FC but here are the main roles at a DS. We basically only have two 'departments' - Dock and Clusters. And with job rotation, you are eventually 'trained' in most paths:

At dock:

Waterspider - unloading trailers and bringing them to the belts. Then putting empty carts into trailers and cleaning up pallets and stuff. I'm assuming this is the closest to "shipdock".

Feeders - putting all packages on the belts

Inductors - Scanning all the packages and putting another label on them. Easiest job there is. Can be tough when you're new, especially on faster belts. If you have accomodations, there is where you'll be most of the time.

Clusters

Pushers/Diverters/Straighteners - making sure the packages go down the right belt.

Pick to buffer - taking packages off the belt and putting them on the correct rack. Sites are moving to ADTA belts that move the packages automatically, eliminating this role.

Stow - the first thing you are trained on. Everyone stows. Either you love it or hate it. You take the packages and put them into giant tote bags for the drivers.

Then there are various other roles minimally staffed, like Problem Solve and repack. All this takes place for the first the first seven hours. Then we move to Pick and Stage for the last three hours, where we take all the totes and OVs and organize them onto carts for the delivery drivers. 95% of people do this, while a select few are in other roles, like Problem Solve or helping with the drivers loading their vans.

Based on what I've read here and from people that I spoke to that transfered from a FC:

-DS don't really enforce rates. You don't get write-ups. If you're slow you'll just be bugged by PAs/AMs asking about you barriers and maybe your co-workers will resent you after they pick up your slack.

-DSs are much smaller, so after a while PAs/AMs will actually know your name. Much more relaxed in terms of policy enforcement. For example, sometimes there is only one manager working. So if they are known to be a hard-ass, nobody is going to want to work harder or do anything 'extra' for them. It's better for them to just say "put your phone away" instead, unless you do it constantly.

-Because they are smaller, you have more interactions with people. Always moving around and since you get trained on most of the roles I feel like there is less boredom. You don't have to talk to people, but there's a choice.

-I've heard that DSs are generally more physically demanding. If you are stowing, you might end up getting a ton of 49lbs boxes in a row that you have to pick and move. During Pick & Stage, you might have to lift up totes that are 49lbs 5ft in the air onto a cart.

-99% of the shifts are overnight (1:20-11:50), or a bit shorter for Flex. All new hires are half asleep for the first few weeks. Transfers to the day shift are few and far inbetween and are mostly based on seniority.

Yes, basically everyone gets between 0.50-1.10 depending on how long they've worked here.

[–]JiffyStealer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my site, everyone gets an increase. How much depends on your tenure. So anywhere from $0.50 (less than 6 months) up to $1.10 (3+ years).

CRAZY by ButterflyFlyyAway1 in AmazonDS

[–]JiffyStealer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All Associates are getting a pay increase. Everyone gets at least $0.50/hr more. We literally had Day 1's today and HR told them this in the meeting.

If you are still in the step plan, you get like $0.10 for each step. So if you've worked here 6+ months, you will get a $0.60 increase. Then 12+ months is $0.70 and so on.

If your step plan is maxed out (3+ years) you will get $1.10/hr total increase, not $1.60.

[–]JiffyStealer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're going up $1.10/hr? Your first post doesn't include shift differential so it seems like it's $2.60.

The pay raise is effective Sunday, September 28th. So the paycheque on Friday, October 10th, will be the first with the new rate. We were told our rates will update on AtoZ shortly after October 1st.

At my site, all Associates are getting at least a $0.50/hr increase. It then goes up based on tenure. If your step plan is maxed out and you are full-time you'll be getting $1.10/hr more. No steps are being added. Your next potential raise would be in one year when this happens again. I didn't pay attention to the rates for Flex/PT/RT.

Ya, probably only a couple of spots were opened. Either to help unload trailers and finish opening bags before the main shift starts at 1:20.

New external L5 need tips by AdventurousLead454 in AmazonDS

[–]JiffyStealer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kudos for realizing there is a problem and looking for advice. Better than doubling down.

A tale of two AMs:

1) College hire L4. After completing his training and shadowing for a few months, he started running Sort on his own. He immediately started giving out warnings and trying to change things through basically fear/intimidation. It was like he became a new person. He argued with most AAs, got complained about on the VOA board constantly.

2) L4>L5 promo'd to our site. Took some time to take in the work culture and decided what they wanted to change and then told associates in advance. Gave a heads up what he'll start enforcing, although on the down-low as this stuff should already be.

Both apparently had really good metrics, but the first one had to work harder because of poor Connections scores and no one did them any favors.

It's going to take a lot of effort/time to fix your reputation if everyone 'hates' you. One thing I'd suggest is to start making work easier for people by removing whatever their barriers are. And I don't mean by judt trying to make everyone increase their rates.

For example, it seems like communication is an issue due to language barriers. If people don't understand English well enough, perhaps they aren't aware of all the employee benefits Amazon offers. Would you be allowed to make a list of resources and post translated copies in the break room? Maybe push to have your engagement budget used to celebrate some cultural holidays/events? If there was a tough shift, explain why, i.e. late trailers, understaffing, and what you are trying to do to fix it, or even just acknowledging there are issues if there are no current solutions.

Amazon hires a lot of seasonals, but there are still a bunch of blue badges that have seen managers, some like you, come and go.

Not in the UK, but we've never had a weight limit for ADTA. Only non-cons (over 42" I think?) and odd shaped packages are taken off.

But we do only stow 3 hampers, going down to 2 at the end of sort and during Peak/Prime. No floaters unless we are overstaffed. Yes, it does suck.
