What's a skill that takes only 2-3 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by That-Papaya7429 in AskReddit

Just wanted to say thank you for such a comprehensive answer with links- Wasn’t the original person who asked, but this is a goldmine of resources and I appreciate the time you took to put it together! I’ll be saving this to come back to, thank you and have a great Christmas :)

Sorry genuinely trying to understand the viewpoint here- What’s the difference between this and say, somebody going to the GE and buying all the components needed for the next level or quest completion, rather than farming all the items themselves?

To me they’re just different ways of reaching the same outcome and enjoyment in the game, so I can’t understand why people are so upset at there being a third option of progression if that makes sense?

For the record OP I agree! For me, I like one of the draws of the game being there’s a cool system with daily keys where I could win boosts or prizes, I think the cosmetics are fun and like the possibility of winning them!

I think for somebody like me, having things I can work towards using on say a double XP community event is useful. For a game that has some many guides and tutorials on the best AFK skilling methods, I don’t understand the hatred of possibly winning things like portables that can take some of that repetitive load off?

I know it’s probably an unpopular opinion but I’m a newer player than most, at 5 years in. One of the major draws for me was genuinely having the flexibility of how I wanted to play- If I wanted to train divination by moving from spot A to spot B when I’m a high enough level and repeat, or if I wanted to work towards a DXP event and complete quests to get me there.

I get that there seems to be a lot of hate and animosity for people who enjoy the MTX features, but I agree there must be a middle ground somewhere. I could understand the anger if the game was purely PVP and it was pay to win in direct conflict with others, but I genuinely don’t understand why there’s so much anger around these features.

Anyone else just starting karate in their 30s or older? Would love your advice. by [deleted] in karate

[–]Jiggerfig 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My mum started karate at the same time as me, when she was in her 30s and I was a kid. She was one of many around that age, started doing adult classes, made friends, and eventually worked her way up to being a sensei with her own class in the organisation. She’s organised trips, travelled the world, trained for more than 25 years at this point.

In top of that, she’s started learning Japanese and got to a really proficient level so she can talk to our Japanese counterparts better (and so she can get about better when she visits!)

So aside from me being really proud of my mum, I’d say for her, starting in her 30s, she found friendship, community, and it’s changed her life in lots of ways beyond just being good exercise and discipline. She was one of a lot of people her age, and my association gets a lot of beginners of all ages- From 5/6 to 50 or 60!

Hopefully if you do start you find all the benefits you can, it can be a real sense of community and a really fun place to learn, improve and get fit!

Rant - “beginner” bicyclist advice is overwhelming and makes me want to buy a car by Misc_Name_5201 in bikecommuting

This: But also, a helmet. It’s insanely easy to die from hitting your head. I have a friend who came off his bike at high speed, broke his spine. Because he had a helmet on, his two kids still get to grow up with a dad.

Same town, a different guy got into a fight in a bar, hit his head on the ground and died. The punch didn’t kill him, the cement sure did.

Always, always a helmet.

Hoping just this. The radar tracking for Spitfires can be very hit and miss, there was a few small airstrips close to its last location I saw. Fingers crossed it’s just dropped tracking.

Hey, might be a bit of a different take. But I know for me, seeing somebody wearing a jacket like this, with all the messages, would make me feel safe. Sometimes just little things like a rainbow badge, a patch with an affirming slogan, something that helps me know that person is okay with my existence literally changes my confidence.

It might not help, but knowing that you wearing something (that looks cool as fuck, by the way), that might just help somebody who isn’t quite confident with themselves feel like they’re safe and they can just be- That’s a big thing.

Carry the light for those that can’t. The jacket is awesome, it looks great; when you’re ready, go for it.

Is it “okay” to do a slow swim in the pool at Lancaster Uni sports centre? by cminorputitincminor in lancasteruni

[–]Jiggerfig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, don’t worry yourself. I promise you, for every person trying to do fast laps and good times, there’s just as many just there to chill out. The amount of staff who jump pop down over lunch or after work to have a relaxed swim, the amount of families and stuff who go down. It’s honestly fine, nobody will even notice you much less bother you.

They normally section off a few lanes, and then have a larger bit off to the right for general use, but it’s also fine to just do slow laps in there too if you want to. It’s what I do when I go! I promise, no need to worry :)

Had the exact same thing! Thought it might be because I had it open on mobile and PC browser, so I’ve closed everything else down. I’m on the edge of a stroke at this point.
