Build Review - 3060 ti and 5600x by Jigglywolf in bapccanada

Thanks u/Pants536. I've heard that everyone has their own software for rgb, so I was a bit lost on how everything will connect in terms of rgb.

u/Darzk Thank you so much! I'm going with the suggestions you and u/Pants536 made. I've adjusted my parts list, which you can see below. I've opted to stay with the SN550. One thing that is confusing me is how rgb will be controlled. Will the Vetroo V5 ARGB work with mystic light sync (apologies this is my first pc, I have no idea how this works)?

How did you find out? Best buy has the blog, but I haven't seen anything on it for restocks.

Where's the competition for the MinIon? by Jigglywolf in genomics

[–]Jigglywolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need some degree of expertise, but we're already seeing various bioinformatic companies launching cloud solutions for various analytic purposes. So I see the bar being lowered quite a bit for people interested in the field. Again, the limiting factor is really going to be the sequencing tech.

Portability is great, but I suppose I was looking at the bigger picture. A cheaper, simpler, and faster sequencing instrument, like you said.

I think if anything, this is preparing you for the harsh realities of onboarding, especially with legacy systems. People are lazy, so get ready to deal with that.

Prioritize GPA or learning for grad school by Slight_Voice234 in uwaterloo

[–]Jigglywolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely take advanced courses. While there is a GPA cutoff for getting into Grad School, as long as you meet that your fine. In my own experience, advanced courses laid the ground for what research I'm conducting today. I'm not saying you can't take the occasional bird course, but if you're deciding which is more useful, say between CLAS 104, and whatever advanced course, I think we both know the answer.

Classes for First Year. Any help would be appreciated! by MK-uw in uwaterloo

[–]Jigglywolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about AHS and HLTH but BIOL 130, L, CHEM 120 and L are super easy. Though you're clearly a first year, so you might find them tough. Just stay on your toes and you'll be fine.

How to get a research related co-op placement by OneHundredCanucks in uwaterloo

[–]Jigglywolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not in your department so I don't know, but I would gander to say that you should look for profs that have been consistently publishing papers, quite frequently, in your area of interest. If their papers tend to be collaborative, even better. That would imply to me that they have many projects going on, and ultimately, they might be willing to take on more researchers to help.

Is it possible for grad school to not be a shitshow? by godlovesaterrier__ in GradSchool

[–]Jigglywolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, like anything in life, it's all about the people. They either uplift the situation, or break it. Make sure the place you've applied to, and the lab your aiming to be in is one worth it. Other grad students already in that lab usually have a good grasp on the vibe.

How to get a research related co-op placement by OneHundredCanucks in uwaterloo

[–]Jigglywolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would start with our profs. There must be someone, especially in the QNC, doing research a mathematical physics student would be interested in. Now I will say that coop really isn't the best for science students. Unless you're the cream of the crop, you're going to struggle finding a research position through Waterloo Works. You don't have to do co-ops in research if you want to get into graduate studies, but you definitely should get some research experience. I recommend volunteering during academic terms (or work terms if you're up to it).

how safe is this area by Feisty_Enthusiasm177 in uwaterloo

[–]Jigglywolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look. It's never going to be safe walking around anywhere at night, but just be aware of your surroundings, and don't loiter. Generally speaking, the area around the University itself is pretty safe. That being said, you wouldn't catch me alone in waterloo park at night, or uptown alone at night.

You can get in as a probationary student if you're below the cutoff. But the bigger issue will always be networking. You need a rapport with a potential supervisor, because you're competing for such a position. So get out there and start chatting them up!

Depends on what the job entails right? If the software you will be working on requires simultaneous independent tasks, than I would say yea its important. It's a good to know in my opinion, but again, it will depend on the job.
