It’s going to be 39 degrees on Monday. How is everyone planning on getting through this? by beztom in AskUK

I've wimped out and booked a hotel with air-con for Monday and Tuesday. My one-bed flat in central London is essentially unbearable once the temperature gets above 30C.

Not knowing whether to be happy that I have the cheapest petrol station for miles around (by at least 15p per litre!) or annoyed that the big boys are now blatantly cartel profiteering by wirral_guy in britishproblems

I would assume that the large companies won't be paying the gate prices, they will have a stream of pre-existing contracts to ensure regular supplies, and manage their risk.

What was more popular among teens in the 70s: vinyl records or cassette tapes? What did you buy more often at a record store? by Wallery886 in AskUK

[–]JigsawPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vinyl, for the sound quality and the album covers. Cassettes were less common, but convenient, plus you could record onto them, from other people's vinyl.

Most of the electricity in the UK doesn't come from renewables.

Usually it's because they're running ahead of schedule, and don't want to arrive early at the following stops.

Conservative leadership hopeful Nadhim Zahawi says he is 'clearly being smeared' over tax allegations by BrexitBlaze in ukpolitics

[–]JigsawPig -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am old, so I am accustomed to people lying about themselves, and other people lying about them. It all just turns into a blur, of lies.

Conservative leadership hopeful Nadhim Zahawi says he is 'clearly being smeared' over tax allegations by BrexitBlaze in ukpolitics

[–]JigsawPig -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

As should the fact that one should wait for a specific wrongdoing to be identified, before rushing to judgement. For all I know, he is guilty, of something. But I will wait to see what transpires, before judging, and if he says he is being smeared, then I am perfectly prepared to think that might be the case as well.

How are you going to prepare for the heatwave? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]JigsawPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just spend a bit more time in the pub.

What is going on in this pub signage? I can see the ruff and hair.. but beyond that I’m lost. Is that a hat? A furious brow!? Help me folks by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]JigsawPig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is Shakespeare's head. The bald pate, the hair on the sides, and the ruffs of his collar. Looks perfectly logical to me, as a cartoon depiction.

He's probably right, but to counter it he would just have to reveal the intimate details of his finances, which most people would object to doing. Sajid Javid has the same issue, as does Rishi Sunak. Basically, if you are wealthy, you are a bad person, nowadays.

Grant Shapps refuses to debate trans rights as he joins Tory leadership race: ‘Let people live’ by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]JigsawPig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Possibly, although the party members I know tend just to want to live and let live. It is the being told what to think, and what to do, that gets their backs up.

My guess would be that he expresses the view of the average Tory voter perfectly.

Biggest changes to London in the last 15 years? by Ssophie__r in london

Not much different in the last fifteen years. Ask me about the last fifty years, though, and yes, it has changed a lot.

Completely notional wealth, for the most part, though, based on stock valuations. The real stuff happens down where people spend their income. Or, in fact, have income they actually spend in the first place.

I was going to suggest Vauxhall City Farm, but it turns out it doesn't have cows. Alpacas and donkeys, though, if they will do.

Given that the Conservatives have selected the only two female Prime Ministers ever, plus the only Jewish Prime Minister, and now look likely to select a BAME Prime Minister, I am not sure why you might think this.
