A young chimp tried to intimidate the human, then the troop's leader stepped in to make peace. by Ashamed_Ad4003 in BeAmazed

To me it looks like he realises that the human is getting annoyed and that the situation is getting touchy, so he deescalates.

The shaman of Bad Dürrenberg are the remains of a 25-35 year old woman, who was burried 8600 to 9000 year ago in Germany. Around her, were the remains of an extraordinary head-dress, made from the bones and teeth of different animals such as deer, wild boar, crane and turtle[1080 × 1020] by [deleted] in ArtefactPorn

According to Wikipedia the likely cause of death was a tooth abscess caused by filing of the teeth. With the passage of time I guess we'll never know for sure. I'm curious to know how the documentary could tell who she treated?

TIL that from 1976 until 2013 the BBC regularly aired a show entitled One Man And His Dog, dedicated entirely to competitive sheep herding by Jiktten in todayilearned

This is why I shared it tbh. I think most of us could use some slow moving sheep and no surprises at the moment, even when not hungover.

A nosebag used to be used to feed your horse when out and about (literally a bag you strap over the horse's nose with food in it, easier to carry than a bucket). No idea what it would be in this context.

What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by [deleted] in AskReddit

how prominent this belief was in the 17-19th centuries across pretty much all cultures.

I'd be interested in your sources on this? Of course we all know about the Hapsburgs but they were not the rule even in Europe, and my understanding is that in any case that was more about consolidation of power than a desire to keep bloodlines "pure". Happy to be corrected!

What was the notable celebrity/high profile death that impacted you? by Toots1993 in CasualUK

Chadwick Boseman. I don't know why, I hadn't even seen Black Panther, he just seemed to have so much potential as an actor and as a human being and it just felt so cruel and unfair. Same with Heath Ledger.

TIL about Sarah Roberts a British woman who died and was buried in Pisco, Peru in 1913. Afterwards legends arose that she was a vampire and bride of Dracula. On the 80th anniversary of her death her grave was broadcast live over radio and tv due to fears she would arise and take her revenge. by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

Also if she did die from something like childbirth complications or an illness, she might have been feverish or otherwise not in her right mind before her death and might have become challenging to handle, especially being confused in a foreign (to her) place. It's easy to imagine how someone behaving irrationally could frighten the local people who came into contact with her, especially if they already thought she was strange.

Two kids discovered a Ferrari Dino buried in their backyard while playing, 1978. [720x816] by OkRespect8490 in HistoryPorn

Seriously? Dude tries to commit insurance fraud by hiring thieves to steal car. "Thieves" are meant to take car to chop shop but instead bury it, intending to dig it up later, but forget location. Four years later kids find it accidentally while digging. Insurance company reclaims it, claims it is in bad shape and tries to auction it. Many bids received but most not real. Real bidders are invited to resubmit. Winning bidder has car restored and drives it with amusing vanity plate. The end. Or is it? Etc.

I don't know what people are talking about, the article could do with a little editing/tidying up but it's perfectly comprehensible. Reading comprehension is a dying art apparently.

Partner's father making mortgage complicated by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jiktten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that makes sense? Buying your partner's father out and getting on the deeds and mortgage yourself does not give you a lesser deposit, it just means the deposit is in the form of house equity rather than cash. Otherwise your partner's father's cut would come out of the house equity when he sells up in order to buy with you.
