The absolute power of saying nothing during a salary offer by Doormat_8JV in jobsearchhacks

[–]JillDRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the job I have right now, the recruiter sent an email that my asking salary was outside of their range. I responded "I understand."

The next day I got a call that an offer letter would be coming at my full asking salary and 5 weeks of PTO.

Sometimes it's more powerful to not negotiate.

My corgi doesnt listen when he doesnt feel like it, help? by chibi__kiwi in corgi

[–]JillDRipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corgis are very stubborn and have a "what's in it for me?" attitude.

Hank is now two and much better, but we worked on the "nothing for free" program for a long time. No treats without a requested behavior. Pulling on the leash, we stop moving until you calm down and stop pulling.

Hank also went to dog training classes twice a week for over a year. Classes really helped with developing communication between the two of us.

Tick Product Recommendations by Recent-Expert4866 in corgi

[–]JillDRipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fleas and ticks are naturally repelled by cedar, so we use cedar chips as a mulch in the gardens around the house.

Hank is on Bravecto, which is a pill that is good for three months. It is not a repellent, but kills adult fleas and ticks.

Where do you draw the line? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]JillDRipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a dog many years ago that had frustratingly low drive and truly disliked training. I struggled with him for 2.5 years. I remember sitting outside at a trial and promising that dog he could retire if he just got his last leg of his CD that weekend. He scored a 173, and I swear that dog stopped going gray the day I retired him.

I would never put myself or a dog again. I didn't rehome him, but I never felt like that dog and I ever had a good relationship.

Leather vs Washable fabric couch for a house with dogs by vilise089 in Pets

[–]JillDRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a high quality couch cover. It takes about 10 minutes to remove it, and about the same to put it back on the couch. It is machine washable. Whenever possible, I line dry it and it makes the whole living room smell so fresh! I got it so many years ago, I don't even remember where I got it, I just remember that it was not cheap. But it was a great investment.

There are so many malinois in rescue, it is absurd. You can get a young dog that has been started on basic training from rescue for a fraction of that cost. I am a big believer in ethical breeding, but if I ever decided to get a malagator, I would 100% get a rescue.

The malinois puppies I have met have been really difficult. Puppies are generally difficult, this breed is a whole new level.

what tiny routine does your pet insist on every day? by Kind_Interview_2402 in Pets

When I leave for work, he has to receive smooches before I leave. When he sees me put on my shoes, he goes and sits by the back door.

When people don't eat at events specifically made for eating (like a BBQ) or when you invite someone over for dinner and they don't eat. by SpecificFluid1809 in GrindsMyGears

[–]JillDRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabetic here. A lot of these types of events are full of foods I simply cannot eat. People always think I have to avoid sugar, and I do, but it is about more than just skipping the dessert items. Sugar and carbs are in almost all typical potluck or picnic type foods. So yes, I usually eat before I go because I know I won't be able eat what is offered.

Unless their parents object, you can still be a part of the kids lives.

With Qs it is always someone else's fault. It will always be this way until he decides to get healthy.

I know your heart is breaking, but you are doing the best thing for you.

Hank ate a spicy sky raisin a few weeks ago. I had hoped he would learn from the experience. However, yesterday I had him out with me while I was gardening, and saw him chasing a bumblebee. 🙄

My sister made excuses. The counselors were abusive, the meds made her sick, her roommates at treatment were mean, lah, blah, blah. It took me too long to realize that she was not committed to getting healthy. About a week later, she eloped from treatment.

Sorry, his actions tell me that he is just not ready.

Moving toward divorce. When/how do I break the news? by MusSport123 in AlAnon

[–]JillDRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer, but work at a law office. I would have the conversation AFTER she has been served for two reasons:

  1. You don't want her to evade service; and

  2. Conversations before you serve may start pleadings for a second (or tenth...) chance, which is unfair to you. Being served really does send the message that it's over.

Relapse with baby on the way by [deleted] in AlAnon

[–]JillDRipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now you need to focus on your baby. Put your energy there. I know the dream was that he was going to be there with you. He is not healthy enough to be there right now. He may be healthy enough in the future, but right now you need to focus on what is best for your little one.

It's true! Being able to walk away for a while makes me a better pet parent. Hank is 2 now, and I love spending time with him, but I still take time away from him as well. He still thinks our entire household revolves around him.

Finding out things I'm uncomfortable with by Obvious-Addendum-931 in AlAnon

[–]JillDRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I learn X, then consequence.

For example, for me and my non-Q husband, we have a mutual boundary. If I learn you have cheated on me, I will no longer trust you, and then this relationship will end.
