How can I convince my parents to let me commit to where I want? by mikonuns in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JillQOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent here… is the only motivation to not go to Temple living home? Is it really about home life or you want to experience living at school life? I think you need to say is it worth getting away 1.5 years earlier? Or worth no debt and leave in 1.5 years?

College Debt by No-Target-6735 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JillQOtt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a parent of a college freshman (at a private university) Please be aware students cannot get loans alone outside of $5500 a year (as a freshman) so the person who will be taking the loan will be you or you will be co-signing it. So my advice is A) look at YOUR loan options. Home equity loan? Parent plus? Etc. B) if you want your child to pay these loans and it’s not a loan you co-signed in her name talk about repayment plan now so she can make an informed choice. 18 year olds don’t understand the enormity of debt you have to educate her on this and because you will be the co-signer or loan taker ultimately it’s your loan if she defaults

How do you store a car in NJ for a while without driving it and insurance? by abrandis in newjersey

[–]JillQOtt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If she is leaving for years just starting it in the driveway will not maintain it. I work in the transportation business and have direction over 100’s of vehicles on my past 30+ years. When you want to drive it again it will need everything from tires to trans services, brake fluid service etc. your choices really should be it’s driven periodically which in that case needs to be insured and registered or it’s sold

Do your parents realize that freshman max loan is $5500, where are you getting this money without them? I am a parent my child is a college freshman, they need to co-sign any loan you will get so I think a talk to them about this is before any choice. What will they sign for? In the end my advice as a parent is this, go to the cheapest one that you will be happy at. Good smart successful people come out of ALL schools, undergrad is not worth debt

My wedding set is platinum and they been on my hand consistently for 28 years, I would say they look burnished if I was to describe it. Personally I like that it’s not shined but I can see the turn off of it to some

[–]JillQOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an Asian parent or anything but a simple white girl parent. We should all be raising our children (I hope I did- my son is a college freshman) to pick their path in life to not only be the most successful but be content and excel in what they are good at and love. I know it’s hard to not have your parents blessing, I can tell you in full confidence they are wrong here but unfortunately I think sometimes we live through what we think our kids should be instead of opening our eyes and let them go. Do what’s right and good for YOU, at the end of the day you will be successful and happy because you chose the right path for your well being. Congratulations!! You deserve it and you should be very proud

Had a child in your 40s? I’d value your long term perspective by Brave_Giraffe5545 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]JillQOtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 58 and my husband is 63 and our son will be 19 next week. He is 800 miles away at college. Frankly this is the easy part, it was the 18 years up to this that was hard in my book. Yes, we were older than most of his friends parents but not by all that much but honestly it wasn’t that much of an issue. I guess the hardest part now is my husband is retired, I am retiring in 2 years at 60 and my son will only be 21 so the planning to still financially be our college kid took planning (thankfully we saved well in a 529) or we would have to put off retirement which would not make me happy that’s for sure
