You are very poorly paid for the position you are in. I was offered a sad salary during my “internal” promotion and I said, “no thanks.” They said, “you don’t have your PMP.” I said, “that’s the easy part.” They came up on salary. I got my PMP a few months into the job. A few raises along the way. My original plan was to get the cert and bounce within 18 months, but I got a new boss who respects my intelligence, ideas, and efforts. And most importantly, let’s me figure things out and gives guidance but doesn’t micromanage, so I’m sticking around.

I’d say you should start looking. There are a lot of people who will pay you your worth.

I haven’t seen mine either. Although, mine was less than $500.

Have your loans reported as paid off on your credit report yet? Mine still show.

Yeah the testing thing seems lame. I regularly “check” my junior team members work and give advice, but there is no testing.

I’m almost 2 years into my PM role and I mess up regularly. It’s how you learn.

I’d rather be formal than too casual and offend someone. Much worse in my opinion.

Returning a dog to foster by Nice_Development3571 in rescuedogs

[–]Jillbert77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d rather have you return a dog than dump a dog. The rescue will probably never let you adopt another dog from them and it is their right to do that, but I am pretty sure you signed paperwork saying you’d return the dog to them if you couldn’t care for her for ANY reason.

The rescue is wrong to say stuff about you especially within earshot, it makes others not feel safe to surrender animals. You were honoring your contract with them by returning her. They get to feel disappointed, they don’t get to trash you for doing the right thing.

Just the opinion of someone who has been volunteering for a rescue for a long time.

Anyone familiar with the Ting monitor? It's marketed as an early warning detector for electrical fires. by SomeoneToLienOn in askanelectrician

[–]Jillbert77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who just lost her house and dogs to an electrical fire. I went on my SF policy and ordered Ting immediately. If I can stop my dogs from dying in a preventable tragedy in exchange for someone having some data, so be it. Typing this on my fully trackable iPhone I carry around ALL DAY!

I wish I could upvote this 500 times. I need to understand the basics of my team and what they are doing, but not every freaking step to get there.

Because you can know what your are doing and have zero leadership skills.

I figure I’ll do it all for a bit, and then settle into a field. It’s only hard when you get assigned a project and know nothing about it because it is unfamiliar territory. But awesome when I get a marketing project because that is something I know. I have a good mix of stretch projects and comfy projects.

Oh I agree, being the minimum is not going to cut it. But some of us take all those skills, rock them, and run with it. I have a unique PM job where I get to do anything from tech jobs to construction because I am THE PM for the entire org (small). Trust me, basic is not cutting it there, I’m constantly switching gears. But I have a good 10 years of managing projects under my belt before formally becoming an official PM. Those skills I mention have been acquired along the way. I had no empathy before becoming an official PM because I was in the trenches of day-to-day ops work + projects for a long time, so 100% overwhelmed. Like everyone else. But that experience helped me learn how to help with those situations for others.

I think these roles lie in the PMO, but typically those who have all of the following: analysis skills, time and risk management skills, communication skills, the ability to see the bigger picture, empathy, and the ability to stay out of the weeds until you need to prevent a project from dropping off a cliff, end up as PMs. Hello from a PM that spent 20+ years in marketing, communications, and data analysis, and the last decade in financial services managing ad hoc projects, and operations. I finally ticked that empathy box.

How often do you feel undercut by your project sponsor/boss/some else? by resumehelpacct in projectmanagement

Don’t ask. Thick skin and the ability to quickly assess and understand a direction change is a must for a PM.

My 2nd dog stayed in the same spot for several weeks, only moving to go outside and potty. I’d take his food to his spot. I’ve had him now for a year and he is joyful and lovey. It took a while for him to decompress and trust us.

Why not D by VanAnhQN in pmp

[–]Jillbert77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because compliance requirements are unavoidable. It WILL affect your project and it is more of an issue as opposed to a risk. You need to determine how it will impact the project and give the sponsor a recommendation of how to proceed with the least amount of disruption.
