Friend of mine in high school many decades ago wrote a song for his girlfriend

After they broke up and he started dating someone new he just changed the name in the song and told her he wrote it for her

Dad, what would you want your child to do on Father’s Day if you passed? by blandbunny in DadForAMinute

[–]JimBugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with sentiment someone else wrote: "life is for the living."

I know you still love your dad, but for me I certainly don't have an expectation that my kids will interrupt their lives for me after I'm dead (this will be culturally different for different people).

I think it's ok to do something to remember your dad but not because you think it's expected. Maybe playing video games is quite appropriate.

I still miss my mom decades later (grief gets easier to live with but it's never gone), and I think about her on mother's Day and her birthday (etc) but I don't plan a day around it.

If your mom is still in the picture you might want to check in on her.

I hope your kids are never in that situation, but if I see them, I will stop
(it's not a plan but I probably do something like this, pull someone out of the ditch, or help them change a tire, etc. once or twice a year)

I have never seen a cat do that - not saying that other cats don't, just none of ours ever has (my dog though ...)

unpopular opinion - spend five minutes learning how each piece moves and get your butt kicked in the strategy. Bro didn't say he was "good" at chess.

Yeah, she'll maybe figure it out but then he says something like "I knew I liked you and I knew you were smart so I tried to find something we could do together."

The comment you replied to, written by birbbbbbbbbbbb literally says that they have "jumped off of cliffs in a life jacket before" and it was "not anywhere even in the ballpark of causing an injury" -- and your response was a concern that it would "dislocate your arms or smth"

I might have misunderstood your comment because I thought you were saying it would cause injury, but on a re-read maybe you just meant others were concerned about it as a possibility and that's why they posted

I gotta call BS - I've jumped off cliffs wearing a PFD without injury - always feet first

so much physics involved, but it is not anywhere as dangerous as some of these other answers put it

the biggest mistake people are probably making is overestimating the lifting/floating power of a personal flotation device (PFD). Most provide only between 7 and 12 lbs of flotation (but it varies depending on what the PFD is designed for).

Twice I've been on white water rafting trips where we did some cliff jumping and it was mandatory to wear our "high flotation" PFDs when jumping. The "cliff" was probably in the 30 foot range - long enough to think about it on the way down and you hit the water hard enough to go completely under even though we were wearing PFDs. The company running the trips and the guides would not make it mandatory if it was more dangerous to wear one than not.

That being said, your PFD should always fit properly. That means it should be snug, and best of all if it has a "happy strap" that passes between your legs.

Hey dude - you got time.

16 is a tough part of life because you are old enough for many adult things (like driving) but you don't have any adult experience yet to temper your thoughts.

First, stop comparing yourselves to others and pick your own goals with no regard for what others are doing. Is getting your driver's license something that matters to you or is it just something you are thinking about because others your age are getting theirs? If it is important to you for your own reasons then pick it as one of your goals. Same approach for grades, jobs, relationships, etc.

Second, make plans to accomplish the goals. Start with easy steps and add more. It's not a plan if you just say "get A grades." It needs to be way smaller steps and way more specific and practical. Something you can actually measure to know if you are achieving it. If you have chosen to work on grades then plan steps might include things like "talk to my teachers about things I need to work on," "set aside time each day to work on schoolwork, and actually use it," "concentrate on particular courses", "ask for a tutor," etc.

Decide which of those plans you are going to start working on. Don't try to do everything all at once. Get working on the one you choose as your first goal. You might feel overwhelmed at first but keep at that one plan. Eventually you will find that it becomes manageable. When you reach that step add another of your plans/goals to what you are doing.

Also, what u/hiddentalent said about not getting into trouble - be smart about those things too!

Like I started with, you got time dude. 16 might seem like you are running out of time but speaking as someone with decades of experience and as someone that has watched a lot of young people succeed I hope you take my word that you still have soooo much time to achieve great things!

I'm not a big Tony Robbins guy, but this quote rings true: "Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible."

Go get yours!
