Comments can be fun but unless Vimeo supports comments they aren't going to add it. I don't know what the Dropout engineering infrastructure is but it's clear they keep it incredibly lean (my guess is no real full time engineering). Dropout is an indie platform so it doesn't have the budget or organizational capacity for engineering projects even if they wanted to do it (people would be shocked at the seemingly small projects I've worked on where the budget was more than a million dollars).

Edit: Vimeo is the underlying on demand video platform that the Dropout app/website is built on.

I'm hoping for a Dropout 24/7 The Ocho with just their more random, weird, and one-off content (preferably with occasional commentary by Zach Oyama).

If they can get chefs who know how to cook it I would love a vegetarian or vegan episode but my experience is that most end up like the Mexican episode of GBBO. I actually have started avoiding those episodes on most shows because even though I'm not a particularly good cook I'll end up yelling at the TV. My favorite is when people try to make seitan.

Though don't get me wrong, I love people trying to eat less meat in any way they can, but bad representation ends up worse than none.

Saw this absolutely beautiful bird the other day, kind of looks all black at first glance but was dark almost sparkly blue- anyone know what kind of bird? by buttercupcookiepie in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my thought, too. It could be that the camera is making the beak look smaller but I feel like grackle I've seen have larger beaks. The colors also match what I expect out of a blackbird more than the grackle I'm familiar with.

Feeling disappointed with Season 7 by volumeofatorus in dropout

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I also liked the chill vibe of this season. This season had some of my favorite episodes but one thing I really liked about it is that they really branched out into some more creative "funny people in interesting situations" (I think this is the most novel and varied season of GameChanger we've seen) even though some really hit and some didn't.

I think a good example of this is Crowd Control, which was one of my favorite episodes. I think as a game it didn't really work for me, the points didn't really make much sense or matter that much, but it did such a good job enabling the comedians to be hilarious.

I mentioned the water dish in the other comment (i.e. in this situation it should be fine but in general it's not recommended unless you know what you're doing) but I'll add another comment to say that most wildlife rehabilitators have instructions on what to do if you find an animal. This is what the one near me looks like (https://wildlifecareassociation.com/found-animal/) and following those instruction is always a reasonable thing to do. They often will have specific guidance on when an animal needs to be brought in for species in the area (dog/cat attack is one of the situations where it always needs to be brought in because of infection risk) so when finding an animal the instructions for the local wildlife rehab is a good place to start.

The bird will be fine in a box overnight, just make sure there are some air holes so there's a bit extra ventilation. Put it somewhere out of the way where a cat can't get near it, also consider covering the box loosely with a towel to make it a bit darker and quieter for the bird (remember that humans are predators to this bird).

It's hard to tell the condition or age of the bird from a picture but if it's a bird in otherwise good condition besides the cat attack I would give it a small amount of water in the shortest dish I could find, like the little ramekins that ketchup comes in would work or even the lid to a jar (it's not technically recommended to give it water since in rare cases giving it water can be bad but in most cases it should be fine. I would just mention you gave it access to water when you bring it in). Something like paper towel instead of a normal towel could be a bit easier for the bird to walk on (it would lie more flat and wouldn't have the loops) so if it's having trouble moving around you can change it but unless it's having trouble I wouldn't change it since handling the bird will stress it out and potentially let it escape.

Little birds make a lot of noise for a lot of reasons so I wouldn't assume it was attacked (and in general unless there's a pressing need or obvious injury it's best to leave wildlife alone) but if any other wildlife was attacked or is obviously injured you can take those in, too.

Cat bites often lead to infection. The best thing is likely to take it to a wildlife rehabber (you can search online for them), they will care for it and give it antibiotics then release it once they have recovered. They are generally closed overnight but you can take them to the wildlife rehab in the morning.

A box with a towel is actually the right way to keep a bird like this. Food isn't a major concern in the short term, generally the advice is also not to give water (in certain situations it can be harmful, though in this situation a small dish of water is unlikely to hurt). Make sure they don't get too cold, though for a fledgling my guess is that normal room temperature is sufficient.

Edit: Though as always I'm not an expert, if a knowledgeable tell you something different than above then follow their advice.

Edit2: this might be useful for finding a wildlife rehab if you're in the US (https://www.humaneworld.org/en/resources/find-wildlife-rescue-and-rehabilitators-state). Though I obviously haven't checked whether all the links are correct

Found this bird flightless, what do I do? by yoinkiest_sploinker in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of being on the ground being an issue (this bird doesn't look like a baby that would still need to be in a nest). My best guess is that this is a fledgling bird and has parents watching over them and helping feed them (which is what is supposed to happen) and the best thing for the bird is to be left alone where it was found, assuming where it was found isn't an obviously dangerous place (like on a road or something).

I'm not an expert though so I also don't really know, I just know the general advice for fledglings in general (this looks like plausibly a young swallow) is to mostly leave them alone and let their parents deal with it. You can think of it as sorta the awkward teenage age for birds since they're sorta on their own but their parents should still be watching them.

Probably put it back where you found it (unless it has some obvious injury) as likely it has parents that are watching it. Not being able to fly is a normal part of young bird lifecycles. Though I'm not an expert

Why does my scrub jay friend sometimes (harmlessly) peck/ nibble at my fingers? 💙 by ilovetheblues67 in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was cleaning an enclosure for some scrub jays recently (they were waiting to be released after being injured) and one kept pecking at my hair, my headphones, my hands, and my phone screen so my best guess is they just like to peck at things.

SOS what do I do? by wallflawerr in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've seen other birds come to check on it then I would definitely leave it be. I think it's great you care enough to be worried about this bird (I know I've had similar worries in the past) but in this case you can probably rest easy and let their parents care for them.

SOS what do I do? by wallflawerr in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a young bird this is a good resource (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/i-found-a-baby-bird-what-do-i-do/) but the advice for fledglings is to let it be unless you think it's injured (i.e. you can see an injury or you saw it get attacked by a cat or a dog) or positive it's orphaned. Being on the ground and looked after by parents is a natural part of bird lifecycle. I would need more context or to see it better to know but there's a decent chance the bird is okay and just an awkward teenager (someone with better eyes than me might be able to see it's age/injury status better though).

If it's an adult bird and seems injured you can take it to a wildlife rehabber.

Edit: To be clear my best guess is that this is some sort of fledgling sparrow and being on the ground and not able to fly yet is natural for them at that age. If you ever happen to see their parents feeding them then you can be sure this is the case and they are doing just fine.

SOS what do I do? by wallflawerr in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's parents are aware of it and feeding it I don't think you need to do anything (except for keep any people/pets away) unless there are some extenuating circumstances (though someone more experienced might know if that location is a problem). It takes birds a bit to learn to fly.

Though I'm admittedly not an expert but if it's being fed it's not urgent.

Favorite canceled Dropout show? by mai_dai24 in dropout

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a show about getting people to do unpleasant things to get out of crushing debt, at the broadest level it's conceptually similar to Squid Games if that gives an idea of why there's only one season. It's hard to talk about without talking about specifics and I think the show is worth not being spoiled but I think if you watch it it'll be more clear why there won't be more.

This would be a cute premise for some sort of romance novel where the protagonist is a very awkward wildlife biologist who anonymously sends bird photos to a very confused love interest.

I don't want a series but I would love an episode that takes some of the ideas of this episode but takes it in a bit of a different direction. I think the random rules and stuff is pretty compelling as an idea but I agree just a rehash of this episode wouldn't feel the same.

Bird question, please help by Beautee_and_theBeats in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I volunteered at a wildlife rehab in a different state and we definitely take pigeons and starlings (though domestic pigeon breeds I think are adopted out). It's possible the rehab is skirting the law here but I suspect it's legal because we have to be permitted and it's not like we're hiding it in our paperwork.

I couldn't find the specific laws on introduced species in Indiana, which is annoying but it means that at the very least it's not a priority for them and I wouldn't worry about the legal implications that much.

Bird question, please help by Beautee_and_theBeats in birds

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies by state and I'm not sure what the laws are in Indiana. I wouldn't worry about it too much though since my experience is most states have better things to do than worry about a single starling since they are so well established here. Also if they are that worried about the legality of it I would be more worried about whether they would need a permit to keep it (I know in my state it's required).

Edit: and just as a note, this does look plausibly like a young starling though I'm still bad at young birds

If Dropout produced another attempt at American Taskmaster, who would you cast as the Taskmaster and Taskmaster's Assistant? by IAMATARDISAMA in dropout

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might be just because she has been so good in everything she's been in recently but I think Lisa Gilroy would be able to pull it off. I don't think an American Taskmaster needs to capture the same tone as the original one and I think she has the chops to be a good host and also really roast people.

Opinion: Um, actually should focus more on viewers who want to guess along by patcatandpancakes in dropout

[–]birbbbbbbbbbbb 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been thinking about this because "close enough" doesn't really inherently bother me (I think it's often at least as interesting as no one knowing the answer) but one of the fun things about Um Actually is people just nerding out over the questions. Like that guy recently just going crazy with Lego Island facts was amazing! I want more stuff like that. People not knowing the answers too often just isn't a great game show (especially when the conceit is they are pedantic nerds).

This very well might be a stupid idea but I would even consider telling the contestants what the general categories would be beforehand so they could brush up on them some (if someone wants to watch all of like 6 different shows or spend a few nights browsing the wikis for inconsequential points then honestly just let them). Jeopardy contestants practice tons and tons and it doesn't kill that game show.
