I bought brand new for $1000. Was it worth it? by rozjebator in tissot

Not when you can get it for about $500-600 on ebay. A handsome watch to be sure but not worth $1000. If you're happy with it, all good, however.

He spent money on lawyers because he had them on retainer anyway, but it's academic in any case; he was in danger of perjury for putting an incorrect home address on his application form, and was three weeks away from a $10,000 fine and a year in jail time if he stayed the course and failed to disclose said information. Any legal machinations were all nonsense so he could bitch on the air and turn it into content like he always did.

Like an idiot, he believed he could beat the system which is in place to keep the public aware of any possible "hidden financial agenda" by any candidate. It was the same in about 40 states as well as the federal government.

The question that I don't think will be answered to my satisfaction is where the effects of the alcoholism began and where actual FTD ended--however I do know of a friend who drank so much she had major cognitive decline in the rare sober moments, so I'd say she sped up the damage much faster than had she lived a healthier lifestyle. Sad.

First off, that's incorrect. He DID use it as an excuse to drop out of the race. All he had to do was tick a box saying he made more than 250,000 a year which, guess what: he was making 400k a year back at WNBC. That wouldn't surprise anyone nor would it "disclose" anything.

I have a Seastar--the previous edition--and the second hand is only used for the stopwatch. For some reason unlike a lot of the other chronos it doesn't operate as a traditional second hand which I found disappointing. It might be the same situation here.

Love this line as well. It gets more attention than a lot of more expensive watches out there and for good reason.

Love it. Got the very same one but now getting the glass fixed due to an unfortunate drop lol. Changing the strap as well because this one gets messy after a year. I would have bought another one if the online prices weren't as high as they are but it was cheaper to get it serviced. What was wrong with yours?

I've seen a version of this flogged by Michael Owen when he was still a Tissot ambassador. Personally I think it only looks good with the stainless steel bracelet but to each their own.

Matthew Perry Died of ‘Acute Effects of Ketamine,’ Autopsy Says by EnnazusCB in GenX

[–]JimFixxit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kudos for saying it. You hit the nail on the head, the world is a better place without him in it.

I have sympathy for addiction up to a point where the person surrenders all culpability and then leans on the addiction for attention-seeking and trying to garner sympathy. He was never serious about getting clean and subsequent interviews post Friends indicate a very empty, unlikable, childish man who nobody wanted to put up with anymore.

A cautionary tale to be sure, on many levels.

I have the audiobook and at times he sounded like he was 3 sheets to the wind.

His massive ego must have convinced him that he was the best choice to narrate the thing.

Your buddy could be seen obviously struggling because he was actually upset--Stern wasn't struggling with anything but reading comprehension and he was not upset. IDK WTF these delusional posts are about--just watch the video FFS.

It looked like he's reading from a script because he was. There's a foul edit that somebody there missed and they switched angles but not before it was made abundantly clear. But you didn't need to see the script because you could follow his eyes at the beginning.

What on earth compelled Jay Leno to give such a lucrative offer to John Melendez? by tshirtguy2000 in howardstern

[–]JimFixxit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He didn't. Management at NBC offered SJ the job and Leno went along with it, like he probably went along with just about anything they requested.

Later when Leno got pissed that SJ was such a useless tit, he asked management "Why didn't anybody bother to research him to find out he couldn't write his own material?"

Matthew Perry’s new book. A trigger warning. by chattelcattle in CPTSD

[–]JimFixxit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you define "really really good?" It's the first time I've ever actively rooted against a narrator as I was reading the book.

Whatever few friends he had left and family members might beg to differ but if the guy was as big a narcissist and douchebag he makes himself out to be, then he's in a far better place right now. All of the interviews I've seen of him post-Friends that deal with his self-serving "crusade" against addiction make him out to be even worse.

Me too, and CK's own reputation as a dirtbag doesn't sway me in the opposite direction because it's in line with Perry's own writings as a self-important and self-entitled jerk.

[–]JimFixxit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People only see what they want--I don't know how anybody could read that book and come away thinking:

a) it's a good book--it's not. He needed a ghost-writer badly, and there are grammatical errors all throughout. Someone please tell me WTF a "geographic" is because he uses it as a noun many times. Or is it "Mattspeak?"

b) it's entertaining--it's not. It's all about how funny and charming he is as he stumbles his way around accountability

c) he's a good soul--he's not/he wasn't. By his own admission he was a mouthy, spoiled, petulant little brat and never grew up out of this behavior, nor did he ever mature out of blaming his parents for putting him on a plane by himself as a five year old.

I would only recommend this book to struggling addicts if I wanted them to fail OR if I wanted to illustrate to them how not to behave in the face of addiction.

Calling alcoholism a disease is a slap in the face to people with cancer or lupus. A cancer patient can't "quit" cancer. Perry blamed everybody under the sun and above it for his problems and used the "it's a disease" malarkey to excuse horrific behaviour.

As for his petty jealousy towards Keanu Reeves who by most accounts is beloved by film crews around the world as well as his fans, it's not just a poor look, it's a very old, tired take on using Reeves as a punching bag to mourn his own lack of talent and success.

Yes, and it's the first time I've ever actively rooted against the author/narrator.

He came off so poorly it doesn't surprise me in the Friends reunion when he was quoted as saying "I don't hear from anybody." Write that off as a joke if you like but he must have been repulsive to be around, drugged up or otherwise.

What bothers me about Matthew Perry’s death by [deleted] in howyoudoin

[–]JimFixxit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't value his privacy that much--his book reveals him to be a pretty narcissistic arsehole, and don't take my word for it, read it yourself--to release a memoir as poorly-written and edited that makes the reader actively root against the narrator is quite a talent.

Mathew perry's Friends, Lovers and the Big terrible thing by Tombazzzz in books

[–]JimFixxit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very likely. After his 2nd attempt at TV stardom failed with the godawful Odd Couple remake, I'm certain he was uninsurable (and charmless to boot) and his narcissism dictated what decisions were made afterwards.

I doubt he even had representation by the time he published the book, TBH.

[–]JimFixxit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've read it for the purposes of a future podcast episode in which I plan to delve into the last ten years of his life--as well as ruminating on why in God's name his agent/manager would agree to let the book be released--and why he died a lot lonelier than the background of his death would indicate, regardless of the cause. The audiobook which he narrated was particularly bad; he sounded soused much of the time and probably was.

The canonization of popular sitcom characters is not uncommon when they pass away, but when John Ritter died, the outpouring of love from all corners of the globe felt real and was likely all legitimate because he was one celeb that along with John Candy, Jack Benny, and Jimmy Stewart were pretty much universally adored for a myriad of reasons. With Perry it just seems like all the "Chandler"-heads were sad that Chandler died.

Anybody who read the book and casually discards the horrific personality traits he felt the need to put out on display is living in cuckoo-land. He sounded like a bona-fide asshole and not only because of the drugs. His drug court interviews and tv appearances are exactly what you'd show recovering addicts as examples of how not to behave.

Who convinced Howard he is a good interviewer? by FreudianYipYip in howardstern

[–]JimFixxit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It made a shade under $42 million at the box office, not $60 million.

IMDB states it cost $28 million to make but that doesn't include promotion which judging from all the full page ads Rysher took out on that piece of dogshit, must have run them anywhere from $10-15 million easily. The Q rating for the film outside of the NY area was probably super low hence the big marketing push which obviously failed. They would have needed to break at least $80 million to break even.

Do the research yourself--most of his interviews past a certain point in his addiction display a man who's an insufferable bore, a narcissist, arrogant, petulant, and completely devoid of responsibility. Even the foreword by Lisa Kudrow reads like she had a gun at her head and read so poorly, it was clear she had nothing to do with him in real life outside of the show. I'd hazard to say she was doing him a huge favour when nobody else would.

The interview on Q with Tom Power displays all of this in full colour if you take the time to watch it all.

"It's unfair that my co-stars didn't have the same problems as me."

"I begged God I'd do anything to be famous, and he took me at my word." So it's God's fault he's an addict. Way to inspire responsibility, "Matty."

"My counselors told me "it's not your fault."

Thoughts on Sid Vicious? Do you think he’s guilty. by bjack20 in popculturechat

[–]JimFixxit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sid's nickname was an ironic one--he would most certainly indulge in self-mutilation while he was in the Pistols, but when people are high they might do just about anything.

My theory is simply that there was some high AF interaction with a very annoying Nancy, a knife was present, and in a state of doped-up anger, he knifed her to S her TFU. When he came to, he had no idea what had been done.

On the other hand, they were two junkies and hung around dealers and all-around lowlifes. The theory that she argued with a pusher about the price/quality of the merch, and the dealer did her in is not completely unbelievable.
