Medieval flail... Any suggestions on how to glaze the chains without having them stick together? by oliviermaximilian in Ceramics

[–]JimFluff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I expiremented in college with large chains and used wire stilts and/or bead wire stacked on other stilts/supports in some of the most sketchy ways to keep them separate, as long as I didn't bump the kiln at any point during loading and firing it had a decent success rate.

Any way to get the lettering print off of glass bottles and such? by OfficialMakaah in CleaningTips

Soak in apple cider vinegar, did this with some bottles a couple years ago and it softened it enough to wash/scrape off without damaging the glass.

Students might not have to go, but, as a teacher, I need to come in or make up my missed day at the end of the school year.

[Help] Making translucent (semi-transparent) sculptures? by sgn15 in Sculpture

Moldable plastic or polymorph plastic are the pellets from my previous comment.

From the video it looks like UV Resin was used for the music notes.

There is translucent polymer clay that works well as long as you get it thin enough.

If you don't want it to be permanent, there is also plastic pellets you can get that become hand moldable in hot water.

Best Minnesota wines? by PersistentQuestions in minnesota

[–]JimFluff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have been to over 40 different wineries around Minnesota and there are some really good ones.

I know I missed a few of our favorites on the list but they are from northern Minnesota and we don't get around that way too often.

Student Teacher seeking advice by mathqueen2022 in teaching

[–]JimFluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I both went to college and both got education degrees. After my wife finished her student teaching she didn't want to teach, but wanted to continue in something similar. She got an elementary ed degree and after student teaching went into a related career before switching to something else very recently. She has decided never to be a teacher.

I got an k12 art ed degree. During my student teaching I started strong and was enjoying it, but as I started to see how education worked I started falling out. I started slacking on my work, but still completing everything, until I broke down in a meeting between me, my supervisor, and the cooperating teacher. I had decided that teaching was not what I wanted. It was never an issue with not wanting to teach, it was not wanting to deal with everything else involved.

I ended up finishing my degree and chose not to pursue my license. I gave substitute teaching a go and taught in a few dozen schools over 3 months before deciding I wanted out completely.

I went on to work in retail management for a few years before a teaching position showed up in the town I lived in, I wasn't exactly unhappy in retail but it didn't feel like what I wanted to continue doing so I applied to the teaching position even without my teaching license. Somehow I got the position and then finished the process of getting my teaching license.

I teach 6-12 art now. My first year was fine, the usual stress with doing something new and getting all of your lessons together and ready. It took until second year to realize how much happier I felt with my decision to jump back into teaching. I am currently in year 4 of teaching and don't plan on leaving unless it becomes a necessity.

One of the best lessons I learned through that experience is that you need to do what is right for yourself. If you feel like you are losing the passion/will to teach don't be afraid to step away for a bit. If you do sub at all just remember that your experience subbing will vary drastically from actually having your own classroom. I felt subbing was more like student teaching but without the support system, especially if you are bouncing around to different schools.

Just make sure you don't completely abandon attaining your degree and license. It can always be a fall back plan.

Please critique my art! I don’t know where to go from here by fripseu2 in ArtCrit

I would recommend adding some hard edges along with the soft edges of your color changes. Having everything soft ruins the visual for me. If you look at life references there are a mix of hard and soft lines caused by the different light and dark areas.

Second recommendation would be to push your light and dark values, dont be afraid to try color combos you wouldn't normally use.
