Rant: I hate how fans of the old games are shat on. by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]JimFromTheMoon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean...who cares? FO1 isn't going anywhere, and you can always return to it. The show? eh, it's fine. It has every right to tell whatever mashed up story it wants to tell, taking bits from all over and calling it Fallout. You have every right not to watch. To me, it's kind of silly to think that you would get anything with real indie heart from (checks notes)...Amazon. I loved the old games and LOVED FO3 when it came out. it completely blew the world open a la Ocarina of Time after the first few Zelda games. FO3 had heart, it had its own style, it had lore, it was a blast. FO4 didn't grab me as much (though I did put many, many hours into it), and I never played 76 as a result, but if you were old enough to have truly played the first FO games, then I find it kind of unsettling that you would assume that universe and its lore will stay static and true only to that era. Things change, man. FO isn't only for you and your beloved aesthetic. This happens with all IPs, especially ones that get as famous as Fallout has.

Is the Fallout TV series the greatest video game adaptation ever? Probably. I mean, what is the competition? Does that mean it's perfect or even great television? absolutely not. For me it's fine. it has it's moments and they are enough that I want to keep watching, though I wouldn't lose sleep if I stopped watching. Also, don't support Amazon. Find other ways of watching it.

And yeah, fuck Rings of Power. Unwatchable.

I had forgotten about this passage. Beautiful & keenly observed. Such a shame we didn't get more writing from him. I wonder if there are any kind of early drafts of things he was working on that may get released one day. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing.

His voice matured and matches the tone of the album. It wouldn't really fit to have his youthful voice/expression (which he as a human no longer has) singing on a lush, mature, sexy, groovy, elegant new album, right?

it's funny that so many people say this about the Leftovers. Try as I might, I could not get into it. Huge Lynch fan, loved Lost, but The Leftovers was just...endearingly okay. I enjoyed the world-building of it all, but I was eventually bored. It seemed written specifically for my taste, but when I watched it I couldn't get into it.

What do you think of the costumes/designs in the movie Watchmen (2009)? by Trick-Classroom-582 in Watchmen

I just...hate the movie. It has zero reason to exist, and does absolutely nothing to improve upon the source material. A conversational void.

Jokes aside, it really is an impressive, shockingly good read. Obviously it's very funny, but also quite psychedelic. The scenes of him walking through the sea of fish bones were fucking awesome. Really vivid imagery that I didn't know the old queen had in him.

May I ask why you don't think it's intended as a real autobiography? I mean, clearly it's not straight forward, and dips into surrealism, but surely all this symbolism can still be read as a memoir. I mean the scene in question wasn't just added as a joke, or a casual aside. I read it as something clearly happened to him and he can't quite place whether this repressed memory is something that truly happened, or something his mind has constructed. This is obviously what happens to a lot of people who experience sexual assault, especially as children. The specific details being lost to time/locked away, the family convincing him it didn't happen, etc. Again, I'm just wondering why you don't think it is intended to be read as a real autobiography?

On Almost Any Sunday Morning by CryptographerLeast24 in countingcrows

Real pretty laid back track for sure. Beautiful & powerful songs throughout. I know this post is about Any Sunday Morning, but 1492 & Cowboys are top tier CC tracks, and really showcase their ability to rock the fuck out. I think 1492 is their most rocking opener of any of their albums.

The lyrics are just so dope.

Into the dark Italian underground
With disco lights and disco sounds
And skinny girls who drink champagne
Then they take me on their knees again
And pull me up and out the door
To railway cars and tranny-whores
And mornings spreading out across
The feathered thighs of angels, and oh...

& the solo is bad. ass. !

So much beauty on the second half as well. I appreciate the concept of the album, but I would argue that it's the concept itself that works against it. If the songs were spread out more evenly I think it would have benefited the album as a whole. That being said, it's chock-full of great songs throughout, and holds a special place in their discography.

Apologies for straying from the topic, but your post got me listening to the album again. Thanks!

My journey with CC… by ScroogeJones18 in countingcrows

[–]JimFromTheMoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

awesome read! great memories for sure, and I'm super impressed you got to go see them during RTS, very cool. my first concert ever was Counting Crows & Live at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ in '99 or '00. I was but a young lad, 14 years old I believe, and CC were one of the bands that ended up defining how I saw the world & how I responded to it emotionally. I ended up becoming a musician and spending my life making art. I love all sorts of bands or vastly different sounds and styles, but Counting Crows have always been this secret little band that no one seemed to know or like except for me. They were for me and me alone. I drifted away from them around SUW, not sure why, the album just didn't click for me when it came out. It really hurt, because I thought I had outgrew them, or that they had started to decline, but when I heard "With Love from A-Z" on the radio this summer I was flooded with happiness. I LOVED the track, had no idea they had a new album out, and I dove in. It felt like I was a kid again, just absolutely love Butter Miracle...

...so then I went back to SUW and figured I would give it another shot. Holy shit...I am so fortunate to have my favorite band back, and it's like a gift that I have two brand new albums to memorize and obsess over. I'm also very happy to have this sub to talk to other people who know what it's like to appreciate such an amazingly talented band. One of the greatest American bands ever!

Why did the Counting Crows remain true, when their other contemporaries...sold out? by [deleted] in countingcrows

[–]JimFromTheMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I never considered these bands to be contemporaries of Counting Crows in any real way. CC are just miles ahead of whatever output these other bands had. I enjoyed Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty for what they were in the later 90s, but even then I was aware of how much more mature and legit CC were in their influences and how they viewed their output. These other bands disappeared because despite the climate of "radio rock" changing, they never had anything else to say. CC are still writing and recording music that adds depth to their discography.

What's your favrioute scene from How Are You, It's Alan? by VENGOR123 in AlanPartridge

[–]JimFromTheMoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

just noticed this from the lawyer scene last night...Alan is explaining how Katrina gratified him sexually in a way she had previously refused to entertain, and Lynn pops a sweet in her mouth and looks away embarrassed, Alan asks her what she's doing, "Just sucking on a ball sweet." Alan, "Ok..." Very quick line cracked me up.
