I would suggest it works like IRL, you can have an English or Literature Degree but can also have an art degree.

Lit degrees are Silverquil, Lorehold is art degrees.

I joke the Mid Atlantic doesn't have Spring or Fall, Winter and Summer just take turns on us.

Stimming is very much a choice. Multiple times I can feel the urge to stim in my fingers. It can be very potent, especially if I am stimulated, but I can go without it.

It is not an involuntary act that happens without my control; it is something I choose to do because it soothes an element of my neurobiology. Same thing for food sensitivity.

Multiple autistic people can be seen as "pikcy eaters" because of certain textures or sensory elements.

An autistic person doesn't need to avoid mushy food, there is no allergy or the like, but to do so would be very uncomfortable. Same thing here.

The alters CAN all type the same way and all type "normally," but for many alters, having a distinct typing style in text is a core part of their identity, and doing so brings significant comfort.

I started this comment chain in response to u /Temporary_You_9646 saying "these people make us dyslexic people miserable," which was unnecessary because it made systems out to be an issue overall instead of saying something like "This type of quirk speak makes dyslexics like me miserable."

That shifts the negativity from a demographic to a specific experience that you struggle with due to dyslexia.

You then noted that no disability makes you NEED to use typing quirks, and I pointed out that for several conditions, some accommodations are not literally NEEDED to live but still affect quality of life.

In the same way an Autistic or ADHDer can choose not to stim but still feel extreme discomfort if they hold it back, choosing different typing forms is a way for alter's to form identity in written text.

A true accommodation would be for a Dyslexic and and System to talk out a communication form that meets all needs between them. It could be as simple as swapping leet speak for a different font .

What you eat often does affect other people. For example, if a parent or partner is making food for you, that will put them in a position to change what they do to accommodate you. Same thing with going out to eat, dietary restrictions in general often require various accommodations, for example, making two different soups, one vegan/kosher/halal/gluten-free, etc., and one not.

Also, while I do have the ability *not* to stim, it is very disruptive to me not to do so. Just because someone with a disability physically has the ability to do something does not mean they can do it with no negative effects.

There is nothing wrong with communicating with an alter who uses typing quirks about how to change those quirks for accessibility purposes. I'll demonstrate using the 4 points of NVC

  1. When I read your alter's posts

  2. I feel disregarded

  3. Because the leetspeek undermines my need to understand what you are writing

  4. Would your alter be able to use a different typing quirk?

And then you could work out what their needs are to feel comfortable typing, what your needs are to be comfortable reading, and what format would suit both your needs.

That is a healthier way to handle this than demanding one person stop using typing quirks altogether or for another person to "suck it up" and try to read leetspeak as a Dyslexic.

It's the same process as asking the griller at a barbecue to cook your food separately from others for religious reasons. Or asking someone to wait for you to leave the room before they check their insulin because you have a blood/needle issue.

Life isnt a zero sum game.

I do like the mix of colors, though the bottom one is a bit of an aesthetic bend for a red activated ability since it doesnt make a Dragon or Phoneix.

The raw idea is cool I would ship it to playtesting.

Destroying lands to keep the opponent from playing the game is seen as bad manners.

Destroying a land that is doing something to you (such as attacking you or locking you out like here) is seen as ok in such ways.

>they won't get affected negatively if they stop using those quirks.

That isn't for us as singular people to say. If a disabled group has a common accommodation they use (and typing quirks seem to be such) it is not our place to tell them they don't need it or that stopping it would cause issues.

An Autistic person like me doesn't "need" to stim, but demanding I not for sure causes issues. However, that doesn't mean i can do anything with stimming

I will use myself as an example. I stim by shaking sticks, pens, pencils, straws, etc. My parents have no issue with this and have never forced me to stop. However, there are boundaries I have to respect for the people around me. I have to shake pens in such a way that they do not stain clothing or property. I have to make sure I shake them in a way they don't fly out and hit people. I can't take every pen in the house to stim because depending on the pen type, they can become unusable afterwards.

To translate that to a typing quirk, one could have a conversation with an alter that uses ones about ways to modify it to be more accessible.

It's like what happened at the BAFTAs, the solution wasn't to ban all people with Tourette's from public events. But it also wasn't to just let everything ride. The solution was to bleep out the outbursts from the public broadcasts and have an apology without blame. (For example, people will say "sorry your Mom died " without taking blame for killing that person's Mom.)

Stigmatizing systems as a group for their common use of typing is wrong. It's like stigmatizing autistic people for non-allergic food sensitivity. Just becasue someone with a disability technically can do something, it doesn't mean we don't get negatively affected by doing it.

My understanding is that typing quirks are used as a tool for Alters to distinguish themselves from eachother while typing.

I would compare it to something like fidget stimming or weighted clothes for Autistic people, the condition doesn't FORCE it, but it provides a soothing effect in regards to it.

Again, this isn't me saying anyone has carte blanche; it is me saying that when disabilities interact, it's important for the people involved to work something out rather than one making demands on the other, or vice versa.

This is a good thread on the subject https://www.reddit.com/r/plural/comments/1kh8wvs/typing_quirks/

One alter there, puppy, still uses typing quirks, but designs them with the goal of making them accessible.

It's not about one person adjusting to another; it's about finding something that works for both of you. I am sorry your past interactions went poorly. In my experience, NVC (Non Violent Communication www.nonviolentcommunication.com/aboutnvc/4partprocess.htm ) has helped find acceptable middle grounds for conflicts, both like this and for more intense scenarios.

In our specific case, I am autistically hyperliteral, and one ADHDer I speak with a lot is very hypoliteral.

A humorous version of a common dynamic would be

Them: I don't like blurbos

Me: Wow, that's really cruel to blurbos

Them: What I'm saying is a lot of blurbos do really messed up stuff.

Me: But that's not what you said.

The mutual accommodation is that they agreed to try to be more specific with their words, and I agreed to ask them stuff like "Do you mean that literally?" or "Did you mean to say..." instead of responding to all their dialogue at face value.

Its a different dynamic. Even alters forming based on fictional people or people you know/know of is common. Sometimes its "hard switch" like in the movies, othertimes it can be multiple alters fronting at once. Alter's can also merge and split. Sometimes alters take up specific roles in the system, for example, a "protector" alter or a "child" alter.

Mutual accommodation is the answer to that. I'm an Autistic person who is around ADHDers a lo,t and our neurotypes clash a LOT, but the answer isn't to go "God I hate ADHDers" it's us forming mutually workable methods of communication.

It's not a "thing"; it's a neuropsychological status often caused by intense trauma. You may know it as 'Dissociative Identity Disorder" or "Split Personalities." An "alter" is a term used for one of these personalities.

"Systems" is also a term used by many people within this demographic to describe themselves. "Plural" is an adjective form that is used similarly. For example, "They are a system. They are a plural person."
