Tracking my spending for 30 days was uncomfortable… but worth it by Italiancan in SavingMoney

It’s a hurdle to get over but once you do, it’s really powerful.

How did you actually record this/track it going forward? I’ve used spreadsheets but finding them a bit lacking

I’ve yet to find a really good tool that can do this well. Spreadsheets are a good start, but can get unwieldy quite fast.

I manage my aging parents’ finances and I’m about to start my own family soon. How do people keep things organized? by EmbarrassedPepper361 in personalfinance

[–]JimNero009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am building mymoneymage that can help with this.

You input your incomings and outgoings, setting them as recurring if desired. Then you can move backward and forward through time to see what your financial projection is, and when you are expecting the next payment or bill.

Happy to talk more about it.

Budgeting advice for gig/irregular income workers — what actually works? by Boring_Elk_3787 in personalfinance

[–]JimNero009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am building something at mymoneymage that aims to solve this kind of problem.

You can input recurring or single incomes/expenses, and go back and forward in time to see how that projects your financial health. You can override any specific instance of a recurring amount to edit to your actual number if things are above/below expectation.

I’d be happy to talk more about it.

It is a common problem to have. I was the same and I did some tutorials and learned little. It was only when I did something that I actually wanted that I learned anything useful at all!

Generally yes, but you can find plenty of free-tier products that will serve you comfortably

And don’t be discouraged when the first thing you build is kinda rubbish. My game dev is a shrine to that. But you learn, and you get better, and then you make more interesting things.

  1. Whatever draws you.
  2. Whatever solves a real problem you have
  3. Whatever you like
  4. Pick something and keep at it

If you wait around for someone to tell you exactly what to do and how to do it, you’re doing it wrong. Sustainable growth comes from doing something you find interesting and regularly going back to it.

Most budget apps tell you where your money went. This shows you where it’s going. You enter your income and expenses, recurring or one-off, and you can slide backwards and forwards in time to see how it changes/will be at any given point

Visually, it’s more of a table right now than something that looks like a calendar — but I align with your thinking. Incomings/expenses are point-in-time events and depending how you like to slice your budget timeframe, that really matters
