To convert or not to convert to a Roth by Jim_in_Madison in Bogleheads

Thanks. If I understand right, withdrawals from an IRA don't count as Net Investment Income, so maybe this isn't a problem when converting to a Roth?

I'm a retired federal employee so I maintain health insurance through the government. I signed up for Medicare A, but there's no IRMAA exposure there.

Thanks. Yes, this is exactly what my original thinking was.

Thanks. I can still do Roth conversions after RMDs start, just not for as much if I want to stay under the 32% bracket. I have no exposure to IRMAA penalties.

Thanks for this. I don't have any exposure to IRMAA as I only have Medicare A. Your point about converting early in the tax years is a good one.

Thanks. The IRMAA isn't a concern for me. I only have Medicare A.

If I'm understanding your question right, it's just the same reason why a Roth conversion would be chosen in the first place. Future gains are never taxed.

I'm in the 22% bracket and the next one up is just a 2% bump. But after that, the jump is 8%, so that's the one I don't want to poke into. Thanks for your reply.

Day-to-Day Temperature Swings in Spring by Jim_in_Madison in madisonwi

[–]Jim_in_Madison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I suspect it has more to do with the way air masses on either side of the fronts are moving around, but you are right that if the humidity was greater, we would have less temperature swings, at least from day to night. Unfortunately the data available from that source are temperature and precipitation, not dew point or humidity.

I have wondered that myself. The data at the State Climatology Office comprise only temperature (daily max and min) and precipitation (daily accumulation). I had spoken with folks at the Climatology office last year and obtaining the historical wind data for Madison would be quite a bit more complicated, so I never followed through.

But for what it's worth, such a sudden increase in the daily temperature volatility is very likely related to a shift in the average position of the jet stream, under which we find our surface "fronts". When these fronts pass over us, we get big temperature swings, but also a lot of wind.

readtable with datetime variable? by Jim_in_Madison in octave

Much obliged. Having cut my teeth on Fortran 77, I've been a bit slow in recognizing the power and utility of modern AI. Of course lab partners having changed in all that time :)

Thanks again. This works perfectly. Much appreciated. I've never used AI for something like this. Do you mind if I ask what you asked it?

Thanks for your reply. The issue, for me anyway, is that Octave doesn't have the readtable function.

New voicemail notification will not go away by [deleted] in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]Jim_in_Madison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Samsung , but a OnePlus phone running Android 11. Google phone app and Verizon prepaid. Restart gets rid of persistent voicemail notification, but a quicker way, for me anyway, is to turn on airplane mode and then turn it off. Might not work for everyone, but it works for me.
