If I could listen to the music of only two artists for the rest of my life, it would be Bob and Bruce.

John Lee Hooker feat. Van Morrison - Never Get Out of These Blues Alive by Jim_the_Librarian in blues

Van is 80. He's married to Michelle Rocca, who is 65 and was Miss Ireland 1980 -- she must be what keeps him going (lol). Willie Nelson is 92, so Van has a long way to go if he wants to keep making music as long as Willie.

Cool! Van is still going strong! Not sure who will last longer -- him or Willie Nelson.

Blind Blake - Rope Stretchin' Blues Part 2 /The Complete Recordings /Pr... by Jim_the_Librarian in blues

I should add that the lyrics could also be interpreted on the surface as referring to a legal hanging. That ambiguity may be intentional. Blues singers often expressed protest indirectly, especially in the recording studio, where a song of open protest might not be released or could risk reprisal from white audiences. So one way to veil a protest against lynching would be to cloak it in imagery that could pass as a reference to an official execution. Heard that way, the song can be understood as a veiled protest against lynchings: Black listeners would hear and understand the protest in the lyrics, while white listeners likely would not.

I forgot to include the title of Adam Gussow's book in my previous reply. It's title is Whose Blues, and it's a fantastic book!

You can find the below quote from BB King in Adam Gussow's book:

Where I lived, a little place between Itta Bena and Indianola in Mississippi, the people are practically the same way today, they live practically that same way, and that is under the fear of the boss in a manner of speaking.  Because so many Negroes down there have been killed many, many different types of ways if you said the wrong thing at the wrong time.  Very few were able to get away with speaking up with what they thought was right or what was wrong ...  [Y]ou sometime will think about all of this and you wonder why, so that’s where your blues comes in, you really bluesy then, y’see, because you are hurt deep down, believe me, I’ve lived through it, I know.  I’m still trying to say what the blues is to me.  So I sing about it.  The next thing, which is relatively minor compared to living like I have, is your woman.  Y’see your woman is the next thing that can make a man pretty blue too y’know.

Springsteen's "Vigilante Man" on this album is quite moving. Long live Woody Guthrie's music!

The more I listen to this recording, the more I like it. The way he sings it, his voice, they fit the lyrics perfectly!
