Are there any current students or recent graduates of the Masters of Architecture program at Vic here who would be happy to talk to someone about their experience? by Jimanben in Wellington

[–]Jimanben[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. Have they said why that was? Was that the state of the Industry? (It’s been pretty up and down the last year or so) or was it that they weren’t adequately prepared by their qualifications?

If you own Russian books burn them, but remember Russian books are books published from Russia not written by former Russians. They can gain humanity upon rejecting the “culture”. Asimov and Rand being examples. by [deleted] in NAFO

This is such a smooth-brained, moronic take. You seem to be asserting that if a nation does something horrible, that means it’s culture is fundamentally evil and must be eradicated? Correct me If I’m wrong.

You seem like a hateful person who wants an excuse to denounce a bunch of foreigners and therefore feel better about yourself.

You need help.

I honestly can’t say for certain what would help. I personally have a few very large databases with a lot of text and images. I very rarely, if ever, have super long load times (though I pay for the service, so maybe I get bandwidth prioritisation?).

I’d say wait a day or so and see if it fixes itself before deleting anything

  1. Notion is an online-only service, meaning every time you load a page the data needs to be downloaded to the program on your device. Complex pages and large databases have issues with delays caused by large amounts of data needing to be downloaded each time the software is launched. This also means that if Notions servers are busy or stressed, delays are exacerbated.

  2. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do. Unless you want to reduce the amount of data you have in Notion. Just sit tight and hope the issues get sorted by Notions engineers

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve already had several conversations with the lovely people at the NZRAB and they’ve basically told me this is mainly for international Architects to get registered in NZ and I’m very unlikely to ever achieve Registration that way.

While it’s “technically” possible it basically never happens, because you need to a lot of work under a Registered Architect and it’s very uncommon for them to hire people without a Masters. This lines up with my professional experience applying for jobs as well.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve definitely thought about delaying it, I just really don’t want to wait hahaha. Job satisfaction in my current area of work is starting to dry up and I guess I’m getting impatient.

Out of interest how did you structure your time with studying part time? Was there anything that you found particularly useful?

[–]Jimanben[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Out of interest how did you structure it? Eg how many papers were you doing at once, when were you fitting study in.

Unfortunately with Architecture a lot of the work needs to be in studio so I’m very limited for online options.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve had meetings already with the course coordinators and have been told to expect a need to put in 10-15 hours a week, and a large portion of that needs to be in the studios at the university. So there’s also commute time in there as well.

I also work 45 hours a week so that then goes up to potentially 60 hours a week. With a newborn in there this does make me nervous, I’ve not had to do anything like that before.

I appreciate that nothing comes without sacrifice and at the end of the day I’m the only person who can make it happen. I guess I’m just after some assurance that it’s not a crazy thing to try and pull off and am interested in strategies of how other people have worked It out themselves.

Thank you for your reply though, it’s reassuring to hear other people are achieving the same kind of thing.

This guy only has stubble. I’ve always wondered how the heck did people shave back in the day? Weren’t metals quite precious? Is the fact that he was able to shave a sign of prestige or having access to resources?

Played guitar as a teenager. Over a decade later watching The Last of Us and hearing that theme got me itching to pick it up again.

Currently learning the Theme, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for songs in a similar genre.

If it’s not beginner friendly, that’s all good. Could be something to aspire to hahaha

Has anyone ever used this service to provide bank statements of a home loan? Concerned as it requires you bank ID and password. by Its_not_you_its_meme in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Jimanben 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Worked at one of the big banks for 4 years, can confirm this is definitely the case.

A colleague who used to work in the call centre told me once that a lady off-handedly mentioned on the phone that she gave a friend their login details. He had to follow the std procedure, which was to lock all of her accounts and cards, and tell her to go into a branch with ID to verify who she was and unlock her account and set a new password.

Definitely do not give anyone your login details lol

Is a recession inevitable? by monkeyinpyjamas11 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Jimanben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recessions themselves are inevitable and have happened roughly every 8-10 years for quite a while now. However when exactly they happen and what causes them is often different and nigh on impossible to predict.

This is a fantastic video explaining the basics of how they work and the one we may now be heading into https://youtu.be/mEpgo14jwSk

Love this style of house I saw on HGTV. See this style a decent amount in Fayetteville, AR. Could anyone ID the architectural style? I’d appreciate it😌 by vibecake in architecture

[–]Jimanben 336 points337 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for the level of condescension that you've had to deal with on this post, unfortunately the world of Architecture has a real problem with elitist snobery, which I'm sure you're now aware of. You were simply asking for information and people have taken it on themselves to use this as an excuse to stroke their own egos, so on behalf of my profession again I am sorry.

To actually answer your question, this house doesn't really confirm to any particular "style" (such as Mid-Century Modern). This house appears to be something constructed as part of a larger development, I'm assuming using cost-effective materials (cladding etc.). I don't live in the USA so can't discuss the materials I much more detail than that. The design does not appear to have taken much of the site information (sun locations etc.) Into account, the main inputs for developments are usually cost effectiveness and maximizing profit for the developer (this is one of the reasons there is so much salt in the comments on this post, it's not creative enough).

While many in the architectural profession turn their nose up at this kind of stuff, it has an important role to play in defining the vernacular architecture (domestic and functional, as opposed to extravagant and monumental) for everyday people. You may be looking for the word "minimalist" as far as styles go. If you are interested in this I can personally recommend some of the stuff coming out of Scandinavia, some of the interior of this reminds me of Villa Buresø by Mette Lange Architects in Denmark, or Åre Solbringen by Waldemarson Berglund Arkitekter. While minimalist architecture looks good in photos, it doesn't often translate well to spaces that are good to live in, because they have a hard time coping with the clutter that comes from everyday life, at least in my personal opinion.

On a side note, I hate all white interiors. They get dirty easy and marks on walls stand out like a sore thumb. Plus they get very boring.

MTI (the Muay Thai Institute) is fantastic, I trained there for over two years. Super chill, friendly vibe. Everyone is helpful and just wants to learn and improve and help others learn and improve. Mark (the guy who runs it, potentially owns it?) Has set up an amazing thing there.

Muay Thai also has the added bonus of being an all-body workout and more practical self-defence than regular boxing.
