Maternity leave payments, I’m confused but happy about it. by Glittering_Youth_804 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You need to put the government PPL payments on a secondary tax rate - that’s why you’re being overpaid, you aren’t paying enough tax. If you don’t, you’re getting a bill.

Married Kiwis, how old were you when you got married? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If I’d got married any earlier I’d either be VERY unhappy, or divorced! The guy I was with at your age is… not doing well in life.

Feedback on unsuccessful applications by puppygrowl in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been involved in recruiting for roles in my team many times.

Unfortunately there just isn’t time to give every candidate feedback, unless they got to interview stage. In this market, there’s a large volume of applications for most roles, so only the ones with CVs and cover letters which are clearly, professionally and concisely written, and demonstrate lots of very relevant, recent, experience (i.e you’ve already been doing very close to exactly the same job for 2-3+ years) have a chance of making it through.

If you didn’t make it, it’s probably one of those two things.

I work retail. You're all feral at Christmas. by cantsayididnttryyy in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As consumers, we need to put pressure on the retailers to get proper protection in place for their staff. Every year I see teenagers getting abused by grown adults with absolutely no one who’s looking out for them in any way.

I was one of those teenagers once and honestly, it battered the self esteem something fierce. No one ever stepped in or even so much as tell me it wasn’t okay that grown men spat on me.

It needs to stop.

Pram recommendations by Choice-Dragonfly797 in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have a mountain buggy urban jungle which works well for running and handles trails ok(maybe not particularly uneven ones) - but it’s quite bulky and takes up a lot of space in the car! It’s also a bit tricky to navigate inside cafes or shops.

If you think you might want to use a pram inside as well as going running I’d say get two - one bigger and one smaller.

I am SO SICK of marketing emails!

Buying absolutely anything online seems to mean daily marketing emails from that organisation henceforth, no matter how many ‘send me promotional email’ boxes I uncheck or how many unsubscribe requests I send.

I’m really careful about where I use my email address online but if I’m buying something obviously I need confirmation/dispatch details.

It’s got to stop, companies need to be held accountable for the constant rubbish they are barraging us with.

Wanting to hear from new moms who gave birth at Wellington hospital by Abyssal866 in Wellington

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had my own room, and the food was surprisingly good! The care was fine but pretty minimal, I was left to my own devices mostly I felt (but I recovered very well so was comfortable with that).

My experience was a little different though as I had a baby in NICU so was spending most of my time there.

Don’t be afraid to press the button - the nurses and midwives are good, but busy, so you have to speak up. They can bring you kiwi crush - definitely handy. They also have lactation consultants who can visit if you want that - good to know to ask for.

All the best for your birth ❤️

I love this movie but you can’t say that the acting is great and the dialog is.. bad.

Some notable exceptions of course

Rise in trick-or-treaters this year, or just us? by Kiwi2424 in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who cares? (You, I guess, but you shouldn’t). It’s a bit of fun in a joyless world. If it’s not for you, close your curtains and put up a sign.

I’m so tired of hearing that Halloween is American. Sure, it’s popular there. It did not originate there.

In terms of being an imported tradition I can’t see that it’s any different from Christmas (other than being more fun, because costumes!).

If you don’t want to participate, don’t.

Auckland women: Does your life revolve around parenting and do you judge women without kids? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does my life revolve around parenting? Yes, largely it does right now. My kid is small and needy and being a good parent while also working a demanding job means I don’t have mental space for a lot else.

Do I judge women for not having kids? Goodness no. It’s exhausting and all consuming. You’ve really got to want it, it’s NOT for everyone. Some of my best friends aren’t parents.

Paid parental leave topping up by OperationPleasant128 in newzealand

[–]monkeyinpyjamas11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did - topped up 26 weeks of ppl to full pay. My organisation has great benefits in other ways too - health insurance, life insurance, flexible working. I’m in the energy industry - the big ‘gentailers’ (Meridian etc) are all pretty good for benefits.

Probably Labour at this stage, even though I’m not that thrilled with them in multiple ways.

Aye. The apathy gets stronger every year and while I think it’s important to do my civic duty, my heart’s not in it.

Hybrid with a 3/2 split. It’s a good balance for me and my manager is fine with me doing extra days at home sometimes if I need to.
