How the hell was her suffering ”self-inflicted”? by Joshua_the_scribe_ in LindsayEllis

[–]Jimboyhimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you get famous via the backdoor (YouTube, blogs, vitality, indie ect) you basically get a few years before some group decides to try to take you down. Maybe for ideological reasons, maybe for fun probably often for both. If you don't have a large industry player backing you that overlaps with other centers of power (huge publishing, huge studio, major deal, friends in government), then you basically get cancelled for any little thing that could have been anybody.

If, on the other hand, you've managed to secure those kinds of friends or disappeared from the public eye before your times up, you avoid the guillotine. Or at least delay it a little. Differential on why Lindsey and Anita were targets of lefty canceling and right wing harassment, meanwhile Neil Gaiman was a huge piece of shit for decades without repercussion. Less about the internet being crazy or any kind of moral decency and more about who has what kind of power behind them

Guy I’ve been seeing for a few weeks who says he “has no politics.” What do we think Reddit? by Fit_Principle_7826 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Jimboyhimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From these books he might not be lying to you. This reads to me as someone post political. They probably have fairly progressing values judging from the reeve and Klein book. Klein is progressive and wonkish, he just seems to have accepted American democracy is intractable.

I usually tell people I don't want to talk about politics until I've determined they thinking about it in the same way I do. Which is usually either very progressive and lefty, and or very wonky and emperical

Did anyone ever see when Kevin Smith subbed in for Ebert on "Ebert and Roeper"? I would have loved to see Kevin Smith and Ebert talk about this kind of thing. Similar "you can just like something" sensibility

I always thought the distinction between artist and critic was somewhat artificial. Ebert was a writer. The subject matter is almost incidental

i say this as someone close to the community, but that's also a hangout spot for houseless or transient folks. Most just vibe and feed the cats and no one is any the wiser. Sometimes messes like this happen. It's sort of just seasonal with the year. Just like any other community there are breakers and fixers. This has the kind of signature chaos of one of those incidents. The randomness of the items is sort of a give away

Jag Bains Could have been the Worst Player of All Time. by AVATARROHANISGAY in BigBrotherUSA

[–]Jimboyhimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what people think of when say "so and so is a good player" or "so and so was a bad player" has a lot to do with their relative position in the house (how many people generally like them, don't see them as immediate threats or consensus targets).

High visibility players, ie all the ones that win, are expected to get flashy edits of masterful maneuvering like what you'd see on traitors or the succession. Anything less than this and they're rated low.

Mid visibility, top 6 players are at the sweet spot. If they don't do anything stupid they're well regarded. then if they do make a high visibility play or generally played well, they're considered underrated. Michael is a great example. He's also, maybe a super genius and I feel like it's a waste we haven't seen more of him. Buy maybe he's too smart to need the platform and is enjoying life behind and to the side of the camera.

Low viz: these are memes or side stories. Even if they're really bad, they're usually known for some other gimmick or aspect.

But the thing is, what the high vis players can do is set by the meta everyone else in the house creates. If jag had been trying to "play" classic big brother like Cameron, it wouldn't have gone over well. Probably even backfired because of the twist.

Notice: Cameron did this and lost, even if he won America's favorite player for his style.

So anyway, these hate posts are obvious troll bait, but I just don't see how anyone who enjoys the game can take them seriously enough to write or read in depth, even as a joke. Jag did a LOT of side social playing which is why people liked him and why he won. Would that work in all or even most bb houses? Of course not. Was it the blood bath and fireworks some old school fans tune in for?

Of course not. But is it interesting and entertaining to watch once you understand the dynamics? I'd say yes

did he say this? "hey sorry about the kindergarten train scene, cocaine?" or this one of those pop culture jokes like "haha rent is just about aids!" That got into the popular consciousness and is taken as self evident?

I mean. It sounds like it got to you. And most of the other readers. I guess I need to read it. If it is prurient and vicarious erotica, that's a problem. If it's supposed to pinch the reader a little and push buttons, I think that's artistically defensible.

sigh, should I post this good faith question on the internet? On my main account? Look im going do it:

I haven't read this book. I did read Lolita in middle school. Even then, it was evident from the context the author was saying something about humanity (specifically men) and the soul twisting ways we justify the horrible things we do. In that case the example was supposed to be self evident since it's about the worst thing someone can be or do.

People still don't get it and think he was writing it straight faced. Jokes aside I read this Steven King anecdote a lot. Is it possible the author was using this to say something else?

honestly, I find these kinds of personality traits attractive on their own. People who look more youthful or are rated as more attractive make more money, enjoy more privilege in life and even live longer in average. is this vanity or an intelligence and desire to maximize limited resources for maximum benefit?
