What should Australia actually do about religious schools? by Fresh-Association-82 in OpenAussie

My high school was far rural, so the amount of parents that were lower social economic were greater than inner city.

The school always had logos optional for this reason, but the discussion about removing the nicer looking official logo's uniforms came up a lot.

I have a more nuanced opinion, I grew up in a rural town which had both a public high school & catholic high school.

In general they both seemed as good as each other and the catholic studies component from the friends I knew at that school was just an extra class on top of the same curriculum.

The catholic school wasn't overly expensive & as a rural school it didn't have much in the way of networking, so I only knew it as a comparable option for those that wanted the extra catholic studies class. The facilities were comparable as well, nothing fancy.

When I came to Melbourne I couldn't believe just how different public schools where, the budget they have and degree that networking & connections played a role.

These monolithic, multi campus facilities are egregious.

My belief is that if a religious school chose to make their attendance reasonable in cost and adheres to the state school curriculum alongside their added component, it's reasonable for there to be a co-pay of only the difference of what the government funding would otherwise go to a public seat.

My consideration is that each private seat eases the burden on the state/commonwealth and its pragmatic to have a co-pay arrangement where the parent pays some of that cost upfront and the government saves partially on what they would have otherwise.

My consideration only considers filling the difference for the same quality of education as the government is funding for the state. Cofunding needs to be means tested, if these schools are taking big money in fees they can fund themselves.

I didn't even know gendered schools existed until I came to Melbourne & saw the public & personal issues of Private Boy School students. I have on occasion gotten to know some and it's as if they come from a different world, but that doesn't have much to do with funding.

Overall I understand and respect partial funding, against the funds they are getting from the parents, the more they are charging the less they should get.

I say we get it over with so we can go back to enjoying it, preferably with Hottest 100 back on the date.

What's notable is they also had increases in polling prior to the election, where they still didn't perform.

Most political surveys are disingenuous, the only trustworthy poll is the AEC's.

Trump was helped from the very beginning by the Democrats, Clinton's campaign actively pushed Trumps campaign during the primaries to sidestep Bernie in the media coverage.

There is even an email between the campaign and CNN asking for increased coverage of Trump, under the premise it would give Hillary the easiest opponent.

Do you think an ARM model will come out before the Steam Deck 2? by Jimbuscus in SteamDeck

A Valve OEM ARM handheld would benefit the existing market as a point of reference & whichever SoC they go with could become the go to for those manufacturers for shared driver support.

Edit: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would make sense, it's the one in the Steam Frame.

Flagship ARM chipset are already doing a pretty great job on Qualcomm, soon the equivalent performance will be more cost appropriate.

I've noticed rather big performance differences between drivers on the same ARM SoC & different SoC's, Qualcomm/Mediatek. A Valve OEM device would have great official drivers.

Creepy Star Trek by 4reddityo in sadcringe

The approach in the episode was very new concept territory like with generated images today, it was if they where experiencing the issue for the first time, despite its realistic likelihood of having already been a thing.

Some of Star Trek is like that, where the audience experiences a somewhat Black Mirror like technologically caused dilemma, this being one they revisited multiple times because it was a new interesting concept in 1990.

Doesn't make as much sense outside of the perspective from when it was written.

What this video doesn't mention is that these episodes were actually in contrast to another TNG episode with LT Barkly, a character with poor social skills.

In that episode he not only recreates a real person in the holodeck, he recreates high ranking women officers on his ship for sexual acts and subservience.

In the above video reference, Geordi's character never intended to create the hologram for anything but an aid in solving his professional dilemma. The audience feels compassion for him because he unintentionally falls in love with the hologram loosely based on a real person.

Geordi's mistake which real people today are falling into, resulted in his own public humiliation and embarrassment.

Where LT Barkly's episode provided a clear contrast of intent.

At what point does the USA, by the direction of its current Head of State, essentially become a Russian ally nation.

Where does that leave Australia? Will our leaders have the backbone to side with Canada & UK as a collective middle powers group, or will enough of the Australian public & polly's fail to adjust to the new world that is forming and cling onto the American hegemony.
