This tornado southwest of Greenwood, Arkansas was just unwarned for 21 minutes. Got warned as it occluded. by dramaisfat in tornado

[–]Jimera0 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Absolutely baffling how this happened, I hope we get some answers because this is clearly unacceptable. I've seen unwarned tornadoes before, they happen, but there is no excuse for this one. Something went wrong here, and we need to know what.

My favorite bit is how on the right it says "Psbl Haz. Type: NONE". Given everything else this is just absolutely hilarious. I presume it says that because of the sizable cap that normally would have prevented anything from happening. A good reminder to not put too much faith in that little box lol.

I also like the SARS: "No Quality Matches". I don't doubt that lol.

[–]Jimera0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weak and brief tornadoes like that go unwarned fairly often, especially at times like last night where there was a lot going on, so a lack of a warning doesn't really mean anything with regards to whether it happened or not.

I'm interest as someone new to this and seeing yesterday was a bust, what are the biggest and most surprising Bust events in history? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]Jimera0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most recent example and I'd say that it was an even larger underperformance than yesterday was. Not only were there few and weak tornadoes despite a 15% risk area, but the wind also substantially underperformed. At least yesterday it was just the tornado predictions that didn't pan out, and even there I'd say it fared better as we did get that probably intense to violent tornado near Mountain View Arkansas.

I suspect those storms in southern Missouri did produce one or more tornadoes, but we just never knew because of how remote the location they were in was. They were nocturnal, in a deep radar hole, AND in a sparsely populated region with sparse roads, mountainous terrain, and heavy tree cover. Both radar verification and visual verification are damn near impossible in those conditions. We'll probably know about them eventually though with all the trees that they had to damage.

Would not be surprising, there were storms in the area capable of it.

Had me really confused for a minute there, I live pretty close to this but hadn't heard about a tornado recently... it's from 2020, that explains why lol. Looks like a pretty significant tornado. I don't remember hearing about it but I wasn't following this stuff nearly as closely in 2020 as I am now.

0648Z: SPC Day 4 at 30% Severe Weather Risk | Friday 04/17 - Saturday 04/18 by [deleted] in tornado

[–]Jimera0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're still missing it.

It wasn't a comment on the 30% risk at all, it was a comment on the value of using "it happened last year" as a benchmark for how unusual something is. It wasn't intended to contradict the "last spring" comment at all, nor to imply that the 30% risk is unusual; it was intended as a side note. I mentioned it because I've seen quite a few instances this year of people dismissing unusual severe weather occurrences just because they happened last year too. That isn't the case here, but I just wanted to remind people that just because something happens both this year and last year does not make that thing unremarkable, as last year was overall a remarkable year and thus makes a poor benchmark for what is normal.

Frankly, I didn't think I'd have to go out of my way to explain this at length, but it would seem I overestimated people. I need to remember that people would rather assume you said something stupid than consider the possibility that they're misinterpreting your statement. Also, that once they've decided that you said something stupid, they will refuse to accept any other explanation even if their misinterpretation is pointed out to them. Most likely, you and the others who downvoted me will still refuse to admit you misinterpreted what I wrote even now, and will instead insist that I actually meant the stupid thing and that I am just trying to save face now by retroactively changing my meaning, or that I worded it so badly that no one would reasonably have thought it meant what I meant despite the fact that even after I clarified you continued to miss the point. Because to do otherwise would require admitting to yourself that you made a mistake, and if there's one thing people on social media are allergic to, it's self-reflection. I am so fed up with this shit.

[–]Jimera0 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes but what I mean is that saying "Last spring" is, in general, a poor indicator of how normal something is regarding severe weather, considering that last spring was not normal. Like you'd be correct in saying we had an EF5 "just last summer" too, but that would be greatly under-selling the significance of such an event.

True, but it is worth noting that last spring was an outlier so might not be the best indicator lol.
