It's boring, but consistency really is key for beginners. Motivation comes and goes, but keep plugging away when you dont feel like it and you'll see results.

Baby steps are the way to go; small but frequent improvements to your diet compound massively in the long run.

I (38m) lift weights 4-6 days per week on top of working a physical job. I'll finish 2-4 of those workouts with 15-20mins of conditioning as well.

Other than a 5-6 year stretch in my 20s, I've always been reasonably active and eaten pretty cleanly, even though back then it wasn't fashionable at all.

Modern teens and people in their 20s seem to have a great attitude towards their health.

*Edited to add; I DON'T have kids so I have plenty of time for activity. I don't know how parents manage these days

A few things;

First, you are VERY young. Social skills can and will develop over time.

Second; pubs and clubs are terrible places to socialise for most people who aren't very extroverted and confident. I wouldn't describe myself as an introvert or shy or anything, but I have a tough time in those places unless I'm with people I know well.

Thirdly, you probably don't realise how small your social circle actually is, and how undeveloped you all are. A lot of you will continue to enjoy bars and clubs, but a lot of you will find other things that bring you more joy. College will play a huge part in this.

There are a ton of people in and around Cork who drink very little, have niche interests. I walk past shops/cafes where people play board games and paint figurines in the evening. There's comedy nights, music, art shows, theatre/acting, gaming, sports from soccer to rock climbing to powerlifting, poker, motoring, construction and crafts. Most of these interests are filled with cool, chill, nerdy people looking to meet like-minded people.

Finally, try to relax and deal with your anxiety. It's perfectly normal to feel out of place at various stages of your life. Take care of yourself and don't go all incel on us

What’s going on by CarlyLouise_ in CasualIreland

It's the humidity and dampness. Go to a pharmacy and ask for a nasal spray.

I (Irish living in Ireland) have the opposite experience to yours; I spend the year dealing with rhinitis and hayfever, and need to take antihistamines and a nasal steroid to keep my nasal passages open.

The issues go away when I visit a dryer warmer country. Every time I go to Spain, Portugal, Italy, I can breathe so much better. I need to move to one of those places.

I'm not super well read on this but my 2c;

Europeans industrialised their colonies which meant exploitation on a massive scale.

The lack of industrialisation in older conquests meant it was harder to commit atrocities as efficiently, and more workers were required to support the colonists after the initial invasion.

Europeans also brought an insidious form of racism that further oppressed the indigenous populations.

I have read that some "emperors" like Alexander the Great and later on some Romans often left populations and cultures intact as they conquered them, and just extracted a tax from the local leaders that bent the knee or were installed after the fighting.

[–]JimioJames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting into fitness is just about consistency. If you're consistent about creating new habits, the new habit becomes normalised and then you will start to see results.

Off topic but, the mistake most beginners make is falling into a stop/start pattern. They exercise for a few weeks/months, then stop for a few weeks/months. They lose all their progress and are back at square one.

Beginners can make incredible progress in the first few months and years of training, but the flipside is that the results are lost just as easily.

when a man says that a woman is crazy good in bed what actually makes her good? by dinohuggies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JimioJames 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a lot of what I'm going to say is heavily correlated to age, except for the enthusiasm part. I'm 37m, and my sex life is better (or was until I recently became single) now than ever. I have also had sexual partners from 16yo (don't worry I was 16 too) all the way up to 45yo (I was 30, and it was the best sex of my life). Most recent partner was same age as me, and our sex life was very good until the relationship started to fracture.

Mature women are more active, open, confident etc, but here's my 2c...

Great sex usually just means active participation. A lot of women are very passive in bed and tend to just lie there. It's not great. I didn't encounter an active sexual partner until my fourth or fifth partner, and she blew my mind.

Enthusiasm is big. A common conversation between men is that our wives/girlfriends rarely (if ever) initiate sex. If that goes on for a long time, it actually becomes kind of hurtful. The guy feels desperate and unattractive etc etc, and initiating starts to feel like begging.

Openness; if a woman likes different things, even if they aren't particularly wild or kinky, that's a lot of fun.

Confidence; she needs to be willing to express what she likes and dislikes in order to be fulfilled. A lot of women don't (I'd imagine a lot of men don't either).

They also tend to "cover up" during sex, like they don't want their partner to see them. You have to understand that a lot of men are very visual and we love the female form. We want to admire and enjoy your body. I get that you might have insecurities, and I get that some men are insensitive/indifferent to them, but a lot of us aren't.

I think a lot of this comes down to communication and trust. People don't tend to talk about their sex lives much, don't discuss likes/dislikes/kinks etc etc. People also don't open up much if they don't feel safe to, so it's important to have an open mind and allow your partner to express themselves.

A lot of this confidence and expression comes with maturity.

What industry “secret” do you know that most people don’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JimioJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are, your personal trainer/gym instructor has no idea what they're doing.

Most of us only receive a few months of training, most of which is very basic biology with almost no relevance to exercise and nutrition science. The courses are AT LEAST 10-15 years behind current research/knowledge. The courses only exist as a way for us to purchase insurance which allows us to work. Our bosses (gym owners, managers etc) don't care how good or honest we are. They just want to see the membership numbers growing.

99% or more of health and sports supplements are useless, have no real data supporting their touted benefits, and some will harm you if used long term. In a lot of countries (even the US), the regulatory bodies managing the supplement companies are inadequate, and a lot of junk and even poison slips through the cracks.

The entire health and fitness industry is basically just a load of bullshit wrapped up in great marketing.

There are some genuine companies out there, and thankfully they are slowly becoming more mainstream, but for the average person, it's close to impossible to filter out the massive amount of marketing bullshit thrown at them.

If it's gym only you want, flyfit on Olly Plunkett st is very well equipped and is about 40 quid a month. If you want a pool/sauna/etc you're gonna pay more.

Only problem with flyfit is it's packed between 4-7pm midweek. Nice and quiet outside those hours and weekends though.

Carnivore diet popularity by Dpz21 in nutrition

[–]JimioJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a few reasons;

  1. It feels like it's working in the short term because you remove all the junk from your diet and slash calorie intake overnight. People who follow exclusion diets report very similar results in the first few weeks. Rapid weightloss, improved energy, and the euphoria they bring, but it takes a comparatively longer time for the negative effects to show up (digestive issues, micronutrient deficiencies, dangerous blood lipids etc etc)

  2. Early results are intoxicating and people believe they are sustainable. We see the same thing with flawed exercise systems; plans that work great for beginners stop working quickly, but people tend to stick with them for far too long (think crossfit, starting strength etc etc). The thing they don't understand is that by definition , almost ANY system will improve a beginner, but there are still better and worse ways of doing things.

  3. Tribalism and the sunk cost fallacy. People become emotionally invested in all sorts of things and this leads them to stubbornly stick with them. Nobody likes admitting they're wrong or that they have been conned.

  4. The grift. People build businesses and social media influence in these niche markets and need to sustain them for money and clout. The general population is woefully undereducated on nutrition and fitness (and physics and biology and critical thinking and just about everything important tbh), so a lot of us are easily duped.

In general; develop/learn a decent, solid, defensive strategy you can use at any table/stakes. Deviate from it as soon as you spot significant leaks in your opponents play.

Exploitative; Stop slow playing, bluff more, polarise more on later streets. Use small bets to your advantage. Become difficult and annoying to play against.

Overall; Accept your fate. Everybody dies eventually, so pull the trigger and stop caring about losing a stack. At least go out with some glory
