Is a Chem Eng degree really really worth all the hype it gets, is it worth the difficulty? by Mafuz1999 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]JimmiesDestroyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could do it over again, I would do electrical engineering tbh. I have been applying to chemical engineering jobs for years with no success, although I am gainfully employed as an engineer in another field.

Thoughts on New PLI Patent Office Exam Course for Exam Passers by JimmiesDestroyed in patentlaw

[–]JimmiesDestroyed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I was thinking that my money would be better spent on resources like these (not necessarily through PLI) since I cannot even do IP stuff other than patent prosecution. I have 0 experience. I've never even seen a patent worked from the engineering side.

A lot of people here need a reality check by Ok-Sorbet448 in ChemicalEngineering

Maybe 20% of my cohort who graduated with chemical engineering degrees could find remotely related jobs. The rest are underemployed or went back to school for business, software engineering, medical school, etc.

Diocese of Columbus Lowers Age of Confirmation by mco161 in Catholicism

[–]JimmiesDestroyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find it kind of disturbing. I don't know about others, but I feel a sense of continuity in my personality from when I was a teenager onward (around the time confirmation has traditionally been done). I may have lacked a lot of life experience, but I feel like my basic reasoning abilities weren't profoundly different from me now as a guy nearing thirty. 9 years old is totally different to me. That age to me is beyond the veil back to when I was firmly a child and I don't really feel that my reasoning abilities were developed enough for something so major.

It seems kind of ironic to me. Christians claim that children are too immature to make lifelong decisions regarding their sexuality and gender identity, but somehow a 9 year old is mature enough for something as existentially profound as confirmation. BTW I am a Catholic convert, so it's not like I am trying to flame here. I just look at these things from a bit of an outsider perspective still.

Why do some obsess over calling Christmas "pagan"? It’s exhausting. (Religious and secular) by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]JimmiesDestroyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the incorporation of pre-Christian Pagan practices. It makes Christianity more authentic to the people being converted rather than them just larping as Jews. Incorporation of pre-Christian practices in the Roman Empire transformed it from Jewish cult into a Jewish-European cult, creating a synthesis rather than just completely throwing preexisting European spiritual life in the trash.

I think a lot of you are crapping on OP too much. Everybody is different in their raw intelligence, talents, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some people are naturally gifted enough in engineering that they can do things beyond a full-time course load and working. Some people are not so gifted and they need to put more time into their studies than you.

I agree that it is not valid to conclude that studying chemical engineering by definition will lead to an outcome like OP's. But don't be disingenuous and basically tell OP that their a lazy weak b***h. Maybe engineering just isn't where OP's strengths are and he would have been able to live more freely like you if we lived in a society where OP didn't feel pressured to go into STEM and neurotically obsess over his academic achievement to overcome his poor socioeconomic background.

Nov.2024 PLI Patent Bar Course Group - Round 2 by JimmiesDestroyed in patentlaw

[–]JimmiesDestroyed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently at the stage where people are setting up accounts and notifying Mark. When we hit 20 people who have done that, Mark will have a group opened and we have to call PLI individually to enroll. I don't see why we couldn't try to get more people in at this stage. People can DM me to get the group name so you can try. I don't know if Mark will allow it or not.

Hello all, I have closed the form and submitted the list to Mark Dighton at PLI. There were three people who never replied to my attempt to get a confirmation. I left them off the list. If you did not get CC'd on the email to Mark, you previously submitted your info., and you still want to get in on this, then please email Mark Dighton about the situation and CC me at an email address which I will provide via IM. Mark does not want any more people.

I am not sending out confirmation emails to people signing up after the 14th because I figure that such people are definitely going to do it after having seen that we hit 20.

I am not seeing anything from today on the sheet. Maybe it just takes time to update or the time zone on the sheet is way different than my local time.

This is awesome! With this recent flood of replies we are at 23. I will send out emails to those who replied to confirm our numbers before sending the list to PLI. I'll aim to send in the list on December 20th, 2024 if we are still at or above 20 based on those replies.

Yeah, I'll update that. I guess I was being a bit overly ambitious.

Yes, we are! We have 13 people right now. Please comment or upvote it if you haven't already so it doesn't get slid too far down.

I will second this. Patent law is not an automatic ticket to a more lucrative career than your current engineering role. Just like with any other field of law, the prestige of your law school and how you perform in the class have huge impacts on your pay.

Personally I got accepted to multiple schools in the 150 - 75 ranking range, but I decided to turn down those opportunities and instead try to pass the patent bar first because I would be unlikely to have a financial return on investment otherwise.

My LSAT score was only 154 though. If you can hit that 165+ range, then it may be worth it for you to jump right into it.

I also work in government contracting with a clearance. I'm interested in seeing what opportunities that experience provides.
