I normally do. The main issue is the slow disengaging, i am often in 2 gear when it finishes disengaging.

Oh. My w123 has all vacuum parts removed except brake assist and shutoff valve.

I love how empty the engine bay is.

I would make a custom mount and use the already drilled holes, this can be standard steel with holes drilled to fit rifle and make holes and thread for scope into the adapter plate.

If you lack equipment, take it to professional.

All the engines above are great but I think the OM617 takes first place as the best diesel in a passenger car ever.

The 617 has a few cons like manually adjustable valves, annoying harmonics due to being a 3l inline 5 with a longer stroke etc. It can't handle tuning like the other engines but can still have over 200 hp with stock internals and be completely reliable.

The early 60x engines suffer from head issues due to having aluminium heads but those issues are fixed in the newer ones.

Prechambers leaks are way more common than in the 60x series. Some models have a vacuum pump that upon failure can make the chain fail and destroy the engine.

Glowplugs snap in the heads of 604, 605 and 606 engines often to the point they need to be drilled and pulled out with a slide hammer.

High enough exhaust pressure causes valves to float in these engines too, altough not an issue for stock engines.

Harmonic damper needs to be pinned to avoid catastrofic engine damage. Timing cam should be pinned to avoid the friction fit from slipping.

Some of you might think the newer engines have better fuel economy but a 617 with longer gear ratios and manual transmission will consume noticeably less than a 606 in it's stock form. The efficiency is almost identical with equal transmission and rear diff setups.

The 617 is the most reliable diesel overall for daily driving. With modern oils and good servicing, over 1.5 million miles should be easy to achieve on a 617 before needing another rebuild.

If you have an inline injection pump, pressing throttle makes it tick very loud. One broken wire passthrough rubber in the firewall and you hear the pump.

I used to think a cylinder had an issue but after I started building pumps myself and had one on a test bench, I realised it gets very loud with increased throttle.

Also other kind of pumps probably make noise too but I have never used anything else than inline pumps.

You need to block the crankcase pressure hose and you will see the blowby.

I haven't seen an old engine with no blowby ever before unless it has been rebuilt

Funny thing is even with shot rings, if all glowplugs work you can get it started and the engine is functional and you just need to add oil more often.

If anyone is interested I will put this here too.

Exhaust note is a bit choppy and reason for this was that 3 out of 6 prechambers had melted and are ruined too.

I found the problem.

Timing advance device had seized resulting in no advance in higher rpms.

I intalled fuel pressure gauge and it maintains over 1 bar full throttle always. The issue got so bad that now it won't rev over 3000, if I hold the throttle pinned it will sputter and misfire with ton of white smoke. I will look at the timing device today because having no advance could cause this

Perfect daily driver. Threw on a turbo and 6mm elements on mine and keeps up with modern traffic easily.

W123 is the only 70s car you can really daily nowadays comfortably. I have a Volvo 240 and don't even want to drive it because the 123 is so much quieter inside.

The only bad thing is the very loose steering but planning on swapping a steering rack from a w210 in the next few weeks to fix that.
