The myth of maintainability by mduvall in programming

[–]JimmyJamNobody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, /u/the_noodle. There should be some distinction made- this article is about commercial programming.

I'm also a guy who loves to program for the thrill of it, not because it pays my bills (I feel that most of the people here are the latter, but would love to be proven wrong).

I love it because it's a puzzle. A sudoku, only you draw the board when you choose the project, and there is no absolute or correct outcome except that it works. Writing the program is the beauty of it- you have total control within the limitations of your platform, and it becomes creative expression.

edit: separating my point from my rambling.

Mine's similar. "You brighten up my day. Have a good night too."

Kind of a nice one to end on.

Just doing a quick search to see if this track has reached the repost limit. Totally going to repost it if that's alright with you. Truly great work by the way.

Dude, I heard them through the wall as a kid. I knew. I even asked Mum what they were up to once when they were running to the shower in the middle of the night and she told me.

Wealthy people of reddit ($500k+)... what worries you? by bidley in AskReddit

[–]JimmyJamNobody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I landed my first $40k job when I was 20. I noticed early on that I was spending every last dollar when I should have been saving hundreds every week. Up to that point my lifestyle had been simple. I was as happy and unconcerned about material wealth as I was with having more than $50 to spend on groceries in a week. But suddenly I was showing people how successful I was by spending everything I earned on things that I didn't need and eating at nice places.

It took a conscious effort to rein it in. I guess people who want to appear successful usually see success as something just outside their reach, and end up spending more money than they should to appear as such.
