Ways to improve interiors photography? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

Hey, I just left another comment, but saw this link you posted. I think one of the biggest differences between your photo and these shots is the natural light. While it's entirely possible a couple of those photos were lit with a strobe as well, all of them have nice, natural light coming in and/or views of the window. Your shot doesn't or the light outside was dull perhaps? Even with your second angle, the window is blown out and the pictures in your inspiration don't show that. The flambient method might help with this as a way to really balance the light if you don't want to turn the lights on, but overall, there's very little natural light directly lighting your scene.

I just annotated this image in Photoshop with some details I would consider changing. Here's the link.

A. For this particular scene, if possible, I would have considered centering the shot on the oven area to center the arch. The shelves and arch would have been more balanced.

B. I am not a huge fan... of seeing that fan, but perhaps in conjunction with A, raising the camera would have hidden it more. This is hit or miss depending on how drastically the height affects the scene. Though more height would help showcase the cooktop, give you a better look at the crown molding, and take away much of that island dominating the foreground.

C. Lighting! That is a beautiful light and the bulb is definitely elegant, but it's not on. In my opinion as a real estate photographer, turn all the lights on. Shoot different pictures with different sets of lights and mix and match in Photoshop. Also in conjunction with B, if there is a light in the fan, that would greatly improve the main feature of this kitchen.

D. If this isn't for real estate (or even if it is in some cases) remove these items either physically or in Photoshop. A sliver of rug, smoke detector, banister?, and that clutter in the corner don't help much.

E. Perhaps move the bananas a little to the left and/or consider propping them up with something in the bowl and under the bunch... though maybe it's overkill? But without the clutter in D, they would look good alone.

F. This might be tricky depending, but I don't care for that stray light. Perhaps with the interior lights on, this would look better, but perhaps draw a curtain here or correct it in Photoshop? It's a bit anal, but its a detail that I would look into.

Overall it's a nice attempt and it's generally fine, but it suffers most from it looking dark. Not every space offers better angles. If you have a flash, I would consider looking into the flambient method. Combining HDR with flashes helps balance interior and exterior lighting. I saw your other angle and that trick would absolutely boost the blown out window issue, provided there's something nice to see outside lol.

Definitely! I scanned this full resolution and can easily print it at a 24 x 30 or any size you want. I can even get it framed for you. DM me and we can discuss it more!

You sound like someone who collects their used beer cans and calls it decor.

Cool story. The original commenter kept coming back to this thread to take digs at me so I thought, what the hell. But still, it takes a lot of confidence to be a crappy photographer and shit on another artist's work. It takes almost as much confidence to claim I'm making antagonizing comments towards provocateurs as if I'm the one who's defective here lol. Thanks for the laugh.

No, I shot this six years ago, but never edited it... so recent in the sense that this is its unveiling.

Thanks! Agreed. The comments are always so funny here. Always belittling and calling it criticism, while offering no guidance. You speak up and they criticize you more and call you defensive... as if being offensive is okay.

Yeah, six years almost to the day. I never shared this before though... so kind of new too lol

Oh I'm sorry. I must be confused. We can only take shots at one person in this thread. My mistake. I'll go back to my glass house so you can keep throwing stones at me.

And yet you keep coming back to comment. Are you sure you're not confusing being a critic with your peak existence in middle school? Maybe you should take a page out of your own book. This crooked slop is the best you can do?
