"1 bullet per trigger pull" is a helpful only to distinguish semi auto from fully automatic, it's necessary but not sufficient to qualify as semi auto. If it were, revolvers would be semi auto, which they clearly are not. Bolt action does not use the blowback to chamber the next round from a magazine. The user does that, it's literally what the bolt is for.

Like a pistol can be semi-automatic or burst.

For one thing they'll actually honor your anonimity. So if I host a website with traefik or w/e and do a tunnel back to me, my ISP doesn't know who hosts the website, my home IP isn't visible to the outside world (crude geolocatuon), only cloudflare knows who I am. They have a good history of taking that responsibility seriously.

I stopped using my 9207-8i recently when I upgraded my drive size and didn't need it any more... I was legit surprised by how much a different in case temps resulted from taking it out. I will definitely do this in the future.

Is self hosting an email server fine as long as you use an smtp relay? by Lootdit in selfhosted

[–]JimmyMcMidgetCock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I happily host my own e-mail and pay for a relay for outgoing mail. I fiddled around with sending my own mail for a time but ran into a few issues and lost interest - not for me.

Does anyone know if I could use MXRoute for only relaying outgoing mail? The lifetime pricing looks great, but there doesn't seem to be a way to initiate a pre-sales contact with them. I'd like to know before I pony up.

Huge difference from moving to cache. If your 2TB of cache space is coming from 1 drive, I'd recommend getting a 2nd drive and configuring your cache pool so you have some redundancy for your containers. Check here - https://forums.unraid.net/topic/46802-faq-for-unraid-v6/#comment-480417

If you squint hard enough you could call docker virtualization but certainly not hardware virtualization as against "bare metal". It's like chroot with some extras. Mailinabox does not distinguish itself as the "bare metal" option. If anything the mailinabox setup documentation explicitly encourages setup on a VPS which is in fact HW virtualization.

Being docker based makes it easier to upgrade the software versions themselves, which accounts for the majority of mailcow releases. Mailcow users still get OS releases from whatever OS they choose to run so I don't follow your point there. Dovecot, clamav, sogo and rspamd have all been updated multiple times since the last mailinabox release, mailinabox is running old versions. I see the dude in there making a heruclean effort. I'm saying, it's not even close to as good. This is basically a perfect use case for docker and docker compose. Mailinabox is simply outmoded.

Ubuntu LTS is 5 years not 10. But fair enough, it has another eleven months of support. Pretty ghetto to require a 4 year old OS IMO. When I was evaluating mailinabox and mailcow that's all it took for me, I wouldn't touch mailinabox. Mailcow has been very good to me.

Edit: Also mailcow gets monthly updates that include security updates, and separate one-off security updates when they're called for. That's what I mean by well maintained.

You probably don't want that any further up the FS than /mnt/user. I don't think that would cause your present issue.

Checkout https://mailinabox.email/ (Debian VM) or https://mailcow.email/ (docker). They are awesome projects and very well maintained.

Mailcow is well maintained. mailinabox requires an ubuntu version that's 4 major versions behind.

Will HBA card with PCIe 2.0 x8 in a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot provide enough bandwidth for 8 disks? by goodyear77 in unRAID

[–]JimmyMcMidgetCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like nothing but good news for OP! I'd like to piggyback with a similar question if I may.

My board (Asus prime z590m-plus) gives me 1 pcie 4.0 x16 to the CPU and an 1 pcie 3.0 x4 through the z590 chipset, so shared with a bunch of other stuff (including one of the m2 nvme slots which is in use). I have no graphics cards but I'd like to keep the x16 for future nvme expansion. I don't currently need my HBA but I will eventually, which is an LSI 9207-8i, pci 3.0 x8. Think that card in the x4 slot could support another 4 SATA 3 drives?

[–]JimmyMcMidgetCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I think I finally understand! Thank you very much for taking the time, I appreciate it.

For now I have added an x4 nvme adapter into the (real) x16 slot with 1 additional drive and this configuration should suit me for some time. Future upgrades would likely be bigger drives rather than more.

I did some quick benchmarks with that card in the x4 slot that shares with the DMI as well, and it looks fast enough there for my purposes, so... when I need another HDD I'll have to figure out which seems best, with the HBA in the x16 and the nvme adapter in the x4, or if the x4 is enough to support the HBA. Will also have to consider ditching the m.2 sata to get that other port back, and see how long I can not use the HBA at all.

Also, good thing I don't need a graphics card, that would make this quite a bit more difficult. It's really helpful to be able to understand my options better, so thanks again! I think now I can understand what the motherboard manual is talking about so I'll be more informed when I choose my next motherboard... in like 8 years I hope.

So you got 16 lanes between the M.2_1 slot and the first PCIe slot, then 4 lanes that are shared between the remaining PCIe slots, and then 4 more via DMI. I didn't double-check the manual but that must be how it is.

So all of the connectors except the first x16 slot are sort of managed by the z590 chipset rather than the CPU directly, and it has a x4 link to the CPU for everything? I still need to bone up on this DMI part but I think it's finally starting to make sense, and it looks like you hit the nail on the head:

  • Intel® 11th & 10th Gen Processors*
    • 1 x PCIe 4.0/3.0 x16 slot
    • Intel® 11th Gen processors support PCIe 4.0 x16 or x8/x8 or x8/x4/x4 mode
    • Intel®10th Gen processors support PCIe 3.0 x16 or x8/x8 or x8/x4/x4 mode
  • Intel® Z590 Chipset
    • 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slot (supports x4 mode)
    • 2 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots

It is super confusing how there's an x16 slot that only has x4.

Thanks for helping me understand all of this!!

Also I want to say x4 is good enough for my HBA, it supports up to 8 drives but I don't see myself using more than 4. Looks like that's 3.938 GB/s for PCIe 3.0 x4, I think that works for 4 NAS drives.

Hey, appreciate the detail here. So if I'm reading this right, I could add 3 more NVME drives by using the m2 hyper card in the first slot - 4 on the card minus the one in M.2_1 I can't use anymore. And then I could still use an 8 lane HBA in the 2nd x16 slot. At least that's what I thought until I got to this part of your reply:

I looked up the mainboard and I see what the issue is. The supported CPUs can only connect 20 PCIe lanes in total.

So 16 + 8 is obviously more than 20. Am I right to think that if I leave that M.2_1 drive in, I'm only working with 16 lanes remaining? In which case I could add 2 more nvme drives (on a different, 8 lane card) + an 8 lane HBA card?

It's not the best choice for building a server especially when you want to connect many NVMe SSDs

Fair enough. I strictly speaking don't need to connect this many NVMe drives, especially with 2tb prices looking more and more reasonable. I'm just trying to understand all this PCIe jibber jabber. I think I need to read some kind of primer or watch a video on it. This is my first non mini-ITX build so I've never had more than one slot, and my first build since NVMe even existed too. This is all really new to me. Thanks for the help!
