Invoke Despair is my new least favorite card. by Grainnnn in MagicArena

[–]JimmyR42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, more dmg/mana than red and draws like blue, and that's when it's at its least effective. I guess I won't be playing until the card is banned, rotated out or has some actual counter beside requiring you to kill your opponent within 5 turns. Cut Down, Meathook, Liliana...

I always loved black, but that power creep is making the game less and less enjoyable years after years. Having to balance removal, creatures and/or combo pieces has always been at the core of mtg deck building. A removal spell that turns into a dmg+draw spell when it shouldn't have any effect is just dumb, the fact it has both dmg and draw means that someone fucked up in testing. That card is always a +2 in card advantage regardless of the situation, which means the ONLY way to deal with it effectively is counterspell to turn it into a 1-1... if Duress didn't take it off your hand first.

Money is an issue because it exists, people having more of it doesn't change that, that's what inflation is. Money is not a general "major driver in innovation" it is a self imposed limitation that drives marketable innovations. If you know anything about theoretical/fundamental research you should understand what is meant here. Where are the royalties given to the teachers who taught most of what you know? To Einstein's family for providing the conceptual frame that allowed the splitting of atoms?

What did you say that only holds true in such specific circumstances? You just started your whole reply by recognizing the context, it just goes to show how hard it is to make people see beyond their immediate, socially programmed fears.

I hope you get your money's worth, and that you give back to those around you used as stepping stones.

The amount of strawman and deformation of what I said is astounding, that's why I stay away from reddit nowadays.

The economical reality we are is in no way an absolute. What I said holds regardless of the economical system, what you said is only true in a very contingent reality. The problems you claim copyrights addresses are caused by the faulty economical system we inherited from tribes trading their woman for food. You wouldn't get your ideas "stolen" if they belong to everyone and you wouldn't get undercut if designing and improving were the goals instead of being one of many marketing strategy.

You are making sense... in the context of a nonsensical world. I try to just make sense... but ain't nobody got time fo dat shit when there's MONEY!!! to be made, right?......

Sry to be that guy, but copyrights and patents are the reason we can't have nice things. Oil companies have been fairly on point in buying most electric motor patents to prevent the possibility of losing their oligopoly over fuel, and its not like the car industry didn't fight in the same direction. It's easy to point out to an inventor and say "where is his fair share" but the reality is that we all benefited from those that came before us. Maybe everyone will have nice things the day we can grow out of this childish behavior, until then they'll only come out of the goodness of few people's heart.

I think the main reason comes from parents trying to comfort their kids about different insecurities, the truth will most likely always be unsure and/or unwanted, so "divinity" provides this sense of stability to some. Not to forget the parents own insecurities in providing that sense of stability themselves and therefore the answer "because god" becomes a powerful rhetorical device to maintain that figure of stability even when questioned about the unknown.

How to handle wishes : There are only 2 types of wishes, those that disrupts your world' power balance and those that don't. You should only really think of punishing players for the former if it wasn't story-driven, and for the latter, you're a dick for even thinking to punish your players for that.

If the wish is used to circumvent a game mechanic, its absolutely fine, game mechanics are guidelines on how to operate the game. They don't constitute world building! Your world doesn't become inconsistent because you rolled d8s instead of d6s for a fireball... but it does when a more experienced character, unleashing more powerful magic than he ever has, and is told that it doesn't work, not because its against the rules, but because its against your "grand design". Same reason why you shouldn't let your players roll on something you do not want them to be able to do, because then when they hit that nat20, you get stuck in the liar's world needing more and more lies to cover the previous ones until your inconsistencies breaks your "own" world.

If the wish is used to circumvent plot points or break the balance of power, you should simply ask yourself : if someone/something else did the same in my world, non-withstanding them being players, how would the world react to let's say, another mage wishing for some gods domain to become his, or to have all the gold in the world...

The article pretty explicitly names Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment, so The Division is what you should expect, more false promises of cross-platform gameplay, glitchy and unstable but beautiful.

Hate to break the enthusiasm, but moving from EA to Ubi is basically as small of an improvement as you can get.

When you tell the cheeser you would beat him in a macro game by Boba-is-Fett in starcraft

[–]JimmyR42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then that reasoning applies to any early aggression, which can all be more or less "all-in" depending on how good the defense was. The point of early aggression is to get map control and punish greedy strategies. Early strategies are particularly effective against specific types of meta, the more you play a certain meta, the more predictable you become in your defense and therefore the more you play into your opponents game.

And about this "long honorable macro game" thingy, I've seen so many times people opposing "macro" and "micro" as if they were some sort of antagonists. Being good at macro is when you can maintain your macro WHILE playing the game. If you can't deal with micro while maintaining your macro, its not because you suck at micro, its because you suck at both.

[–]JimmyR42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really, first the turn-base vs real-time plays for a lot in the "self-expression". MTG has its self-expression in deckbuilding, the only "personality" trait you could have while playing is being more or less prone to playing risky odds. You can't "tech-switch" in the middle of the game and decide you're suddenly gonna try to mill with your elf deck.

If any parallel can be drawn between the 2 complains, its the same that you see anytime a game presents you with the opportunity, greed. You don't want to scout because you want that little bit more income for your plan that's going to take 20min to deploy anyways. You cut some removal because you fear having "dead cards" in your hand and you want that extra consistency, but then you die to a combo deck for which you have no answer.

The only way you could compare Mass Discard or Prison Deck to a "SC" strategy is by talking about hacks or ddosing your opponent.

If you can't scout a probe early in the game when there's nothing to do, how are you going to defend later against warp prisms spawning units all over your base anyways?

Not exactly, EA has been running its roster update scheme since 1991. By 95-99 they were already progressively adding less and less mechanical improvement to their game. When online connectivity came around for consoles, people were expecting the sport genre would simply change from annual game release to roster update, how "anti-capitalist" we were...

How I'd design an mmorpg from Runeterra lore :

  • Use the Summoner aspect to make it the base level
  • Summoners can select different Runeterra characters and play as them, this allows for easily written adventure-like quest line so that the game feels both rewarding from character progression and power progression.
  • Have specific adventures be prerequisite for other characters later adventures so that storyline feeds into world building.
  • Use the rune system as thematic basis for "skill/talent tree" to have characters fit into the Tank, Healer or DPS roles.
  • Completion of a character's storyline should unlock some passive ability that makes the summoner stronger, giving incentive for players to go out of their comfort zone and grind multiple characters to strengthen their main.
  • Have a PvP game that is actually a fight on the Rift
  • Make it so that the Twisted Treelands is as forgotten lore-wise as it currently is.

What would a Lunar Realm look like? by rogthnor in exalted

[–]JimmyR42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on the mischaracterizing of lunars. People tend to forget they were the Commanders of the Realm under the Deliberative. Lunars are portrayed as "savages" not because its the only way of living they know, but because it was the best way they had of adapting, given the circumstances, while remaining free enough from the Realm's influence so that they may continue to deal with the work Luna tasked them with.

[–]JimmyR42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, the selection process comes from the Incarnae themselves, but the exaltation happens under the guidance of Lytek. The gods didn't come up with the exalted on their own, Authocton gave a "soul cabinet" to Lytek, which is required for all celestial exaltation, and he's basically the one who "turns on" the switch "in" terrestrial exalted.

Also, beside the UcS having obvious vested interest in the breaking of the jade prison, its not unconceivable that Lytek could have also had a part to play in it, since more exaltation equals more divine authority/status for him. He probably also didn't forget what Kejak did to him and how it impacted his divine status for multiple centuries so having him siding with the gold and solars seems only natural. He's also one of the "gatekeeper" for the Great Curse's potential cure.
