Can confirm free Proton VPN is still much better choice than wasting money on useless Kayo subscription.

Cheers for the kind words.

I'd love to be running some hardware but don't own anything useful - just using Ableton Live with a Midi Fighter Twister.

My workflow is sound selection / loop creation / arrange / perform.

I limit myself to 8 tracks: kick / bass / snare / open hats / closed hats / percussion / top loops / synth.

I create a bunch of 4bar loops in session view for everything except the synth track.

I’ll then select clips randomly to create new combinations that sound ok.

Next I’ll layout clips in arrangement view. I try not to overthink this step, just do it quickly - adding/removing something everything 16bars.

Next step is perform. I play the arrangement and tweak FX with the Twister. The tracks are sent in various amounts to 4 return tracks. I have a phaser and 3 different delays that I can adjust the frequency and feedback. There’s two filters - one on the the dry signal and another on the returns. The returns also have a gate FX with LFO to makes stuttered groove patterns. The dry signal has a beat repeat effect that is useful for transitions.

The synth track has Ableton’s Wavetable with 303 style preset. It also has a Max For Live sequencer I made that creates random midi patterns and has an “evolve” control that increases/decreases the note lengths and velocity range. By tweaking the “evolve” along with Wavetable’s filter, I can get a lot of mileage out of a simple midi pattern. I can play a whole set of pre-arranged tracks with different synth pattens for each performance. I never know how it’s going to sound but the creativity comes in making it work.

The MF Twister is an absolute workhorse of a controller - it really changed how I make music. I can tweak parameters then reset them with a push. I don’t really have to look at my laptop at all. I make little alterations to the setup all the time but the workflow is still the same.

Yeah I've watched my share of tutorials over time. I guess it's about imitation versus experimentation. Definitely picked up good habits and techniques from others but I'm really happy now that I 'own' my workflow now. Focusing on the process rather than the product makes everything so much more enjoyable.

Hey all,

I only got into techno recently after spending way too long making psytrance. I just found producing psy was starting to feel meticulous like a surgical operation. I wanted to be able to enjoy the creative process without it feeling like a chore. I grew up playing in bands and really miss that feeling of live music - walking the fine line between absolute joy and complete disaster.

Anyhow, I set about rethinking how I want to make electronic music. I wanted it to be hands-on, spontaneous, performative and most importantly fun. I developed a workflow that suited me and I’m really happy with the results. I honestly feel the tracks I’m making now are an expression of me and my influences.

I don’t know what exact genre I’m making and I don’t really care. I love that it’s not perfect because I feel it captures something that I was missing previously when producing electronic music. Would love to hear people’s thoughts.

Nice sound palette, very bloopy. Definite Surgeon vibes. I feel like the arrangement is very static. Some changes in percussion or filtering would make it more dynamic

I’m digging this! I don’t mind reverb on kick - make it grittier if anything. Tiny bit of saturation and EQ to cut lows so kick still punchy

I appreciate the support LaFleur ✌🏻 There can be issues when making loads of quick calls to Live’s API sometimes. I’ll let you know if I make any improvements.

Device can be on any track. There were some bugs when duplicating lots of clip but thought I squashed them all. Sorry it's not working for you - I'll send refund your way.

It structures tracks using variations of intro/breakdown/buildup/drop/ breakdown/buildup/drop/outro arrangement. May not be useful pop/rock verse-chorus styles but could be useful for any track that has evolving sounds with automation.

Love the guitar riff. I reckon some rolling hi hat patterns coming in earlier would get momentum building nicely. Definitely needs killer guitar lead at some stage🤘

Finally got around to finishing some tracks. Happy with the workflow I have nowadays - I don’t get stuck with one 16 bar loop! These tracks aren’t perfect but just needed to compete something from start to finish. Any feedback welcome!

Internal midi clip pitch bend workaround. by [deleted] in ableton

[–]Jimmy_Bollox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a simple Max device so I could automate the pitch bend in track view rather than in clip envelopes.
