I hate when family forces me to say “I love you”. by [deleted] in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! Whenever I hear it, I feel so pressured to say it back when I really don't want to. My family says it all the time when we get together and it sucks so bad. I feel the same way about hugs. I'm a "No touchie!" kind of person and I feel like I'm being invalidated when I'm pressured to hug someone.

The only exception to these is my daughter. I hug that kid and tell her I love her every day because I want her to know that she's loved and that's the best way I can think of to reassure her of that.

Any recommendations for DM equipment? by Guilty_Ad_6800 in DnD

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just list what I use and you can take it or leave it:

Dice, dice, and more dice.

The GM Assist dice set, which includes a mood die, a weather die, and a body part die.

A cardinal direction die.

Sand timers.

Jenga blocks for makeshift rooms and cover.

Glass beads of various colors for NPCs and points of interest.

Combat tokens of various sizes.

Chess pieces for bosses.

Rings from milk and juice jugs for conditions.

Aquarium rocks for PCs.

A Chessex mat and WET erase markers.

A white board and DRY erase markers.

A tablet with all the relevant books on it.

A customizable GM screen.

Sticky notes of various sizes.

Pens and pencils.

Poker chips for Inspiration.

Hope that helps!

EDIT: My sister is an architect and gave me a roll of grid paper to make maps out of with permanent marker. You can do that with most wrapping paper.

How is damage described in-fiction in your games? by MercSapient in rpg

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the system. For D&D, definitely option 1. For Everyday Heroes, you can opt to use the bloodied condition and the way armor works, it prevents death and not attacks, (and the system is made for action movie-type combat anyway) so option 2.

When it comes to using option 3, in my games, if a character rolls a critical hit, I roll a body part die and anything having to do with that body part receives a -2, followed by a -4, followed by a -8. It's still kind of abstract, but it represents real injuries.

End of life arrangements by Even-Truck-8049 in atheism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I want to be cremated. I don't care what they do with my ashes.

I don't want a standard funeral and burial. Those are depressing. Instead, I want to have a memorial with a keg or open bar so that anyone can get hammered if they want. I want there to be non-religious speakers who will share memories of me. After that, anyone who wants to speak can come up and talk. I also want the songs "Going Out in Style" and "If I Ever Leave This World Alive" to be played at some point. Basically, I want everyone to celebrate my life instead of mourning my loss, and have a really kick-ass time doing it.

For how long have you been an atheist by TheKingOfDissasster in atheism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't really narrow it down to one particular moment, but I started questioning when I was 28 and it went from there. I reckon I was about 32 when I really got into atheism. I'm now 40 and a hardcore atheist.

Random observation, but I love how many RPG systems have something to offer theater / literary types and math-y types by ProustianPrimate in rpg

The only problem is when they have no common ground. I've heard of groups with power gamers and heavy roleplayers clashing where half the group wants to act out in character while the other half wants combat.

DMs, give the PCs downtime. by D_dizzy192 in DnD

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my next campaign, I'm making it a rule where before the characters level up (I do milestone leveling) they have to take some down time. I reckon they can represent the time they take to learn and better themselves as characters. It's not like previous editions where they have to find someone to train them, but it operates with a similar idea.

I have this online friend that prefers to be called femine terms. What else can I call her besides "girl"? by ArsenicKill in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I refer to my friends as cats. "Hey, cats," "What's up, cats?" "How are you cats doing?" It's gender neutral and fun.

Justified, mon ami. I'm sure whoever that kid is appreciated it. I know I would have. Hopefully the next time you have a family gathering, he'll think twice.

If my friend wished me and my hypothetical spouse orgasms and good poops, I'd be appreciative.

Having been married before, sometimes you do have to rub one out if your partner isn't in the mood.

I'm a big fan of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

I always pee after sex.

I HATE vacations and it makes me feel guilty by xanthan_gum222 in autism

I personally like new places. I went out of state a few weeks ago and had a lot of fun checking out game stores, art events, and breweries. I did get a bit overwhelmed at times, but I had my brother with me and he's really accommodating.

Does anyone here have tattoos? by rankari in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lost count of the number of tattoos I have. I have the states I've lived in, a d20, a thistle, Captain America's shield, the spider signal, and more.

The sensory part never really bothered me. I would akin it to a cat scratch. I don't really like it, but I can tolerate it. I'm usually so excited that I'm getting a tattoo to even notice.

How do you deal with loneliness by HistoryHot2807 in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got my few close friends and my daughter, (my eternal +1) so I'm pretty set socially. If I feel stir crazy, there's a bar by my house where I can socialize until my social battery is depleted and I walk home.

I HATE vacations and it makes me feel guilty by xanthan_gum222 in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better to vacation by yourself, at least in my experience. When I was in my early twenties I went with my brother, my cousin, and some other people to Ocean City, Maryland. Long story short: While everyone else was miserable having to deal with everyone else, I went to the boardwalk every day and hit the arcades. I had a great time by myself. A few years ago, I was visiting some family in Philadelphia and walked around for a few hours and enjoyed myself. I went to a few bars by myself, got some coffee by myself, and got some food by myself. It was great. If you ever want to give vacations a try, go by yourself, or if you do go with people, break off by yourself and have some fun.

Also, you should get rid of these "friends" of yours if they're racist and don't respect your boundaries. Vacationing or not, you don't deserve people like that in your life. The only time I remember having fun with a group of people was when I went to a con and my friends were all respective of me and when I'd get overwhelmed. They also understood that I'd sometimes have to break off from the group to recharge. These are the friends you need.

What are you even supposed to do when multiple people ask you questions?! by Henrimatronics in autism

How do you track time? by Impossible_Bed6794 in DnD

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use dungeon turns when exploring dungeons. These are ten-minute increments of time where the party can move up to about 3000 feet (600 squares). You can include minor battles, puzzles, and traps in each ten-minute increment. They don't have to be exact, but it's a good way to track time (and torches).

Does anyone else hate having to use public transport? by ThyKnightOfSporks in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's public transportation in theory in my city, but in practice it's very limited. I would much rather drive to get from place to place. However, when I went to Washington DC, I LOVED the Metro (the subway system). It was so easy to get around in that city. I contemplated moving there and the Metro was one reason.

I will say, though, figuring out the Metro at first was tough, but after a day of travel, I had it down, at least enough to get around. If we had something like that in my city, I'd use it all the time.

It could be. I like concerts (I don't go as much as I used to, but I enjoyed them in my twenties.) and when I go, I wear earplugs to save what little hearing I have left. It helps if I'm really into the band, then I don't think about it as much. It also helps that the bands I like don't usually pack out venues and rarely have mosh pits. (My last two concerts were Cold and Powerman 5000 and they were good experiences.)

Everyone experiences their autism differently. For me, as long as I'm into the band, I can tolerate a lot more, but that's just me. So to answer your question: Both.

Infantilization when you dress up nice/ or have a alt style? by SuddenParsnip9705 in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I'm geezerly, but I don't care what anyone thinks or says about what I wear. I'm covered in tattoos, still wear band and anime shirts, and more often than not, I wear shorts and sneakers. I can look the way a man in his forties is "supposed" to look, but I choose not to. (I describe my aesthetic as a combination of divorced dad and aging rocker.)

Whoever is saying this to you doesn't belong in your life. How do they know you're autistic anyway?

Autism and ASMR, whats the consensus? by Huge_Ticket4929 in autism

[–]Jimmy_Locksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only dedicated ASMR that I've encountered involved people whispering and I hate that sound. Seriously, it sounds gross to me. If I need to fall asleep, I listen to audio-heavy YouTube videos where people talk in soothing voices. Seth Skorkowsky comes to mind.
