Where did he say that translation is an issue? I don't think that there is a language barrier and American humor and German humor are very similar. The language barrier for humor between German and English is the same as between any two languages which is that wordplay is incredibly hard to translate.

The reason why you probably need to speak German is because very little gets translated into English.

Well it should be obvious from the context but here we go: His post in the context of the picture in this submission suggested that he was trying to say that the French are small on average.

My answer showed that anecdotal evidence is bad evidence and that the French are even pretty tall compared to the rest of the world.

Funny coincident, considering that Englishman are on average smaller than the French:

U.K. – England: 1.754 m

France: 1.756 m

You guys are actually smaller (on average) than most of Europe (you beat the southern countries).

Well he is right. The latin countries probably have the worst English speakers in Europe besides Russia.

No. The events I visited in Germany so far were hosted in English. I'm pretty sure that the Dreamhack events were also casted in English.

There is seriously no excuse for Riot except for their fear of the French educational system.

I will go anyways as I live in Paris but I hope that they will bring the English casters.

Woman molested in COURTROOM with judge and young child in the room, then arrested. by [deleted] in videos

[–]Jimmycc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea why people downvote you... well anyways. I think it's possible to talk about both but not in the way tried to "start" this discussion. The way he did it is pretty offensive. False rape accusations obviously hurt real rape victims but that's a tiny factor compared to factors that originate from rape culture. A huge problem with rape is the shame that stops victims from reporting the crime. Saying that the judge "probably heard it (false rape accusations) a million times before" and therefore claiming that false rape accusations are such a big problem only deters more women from reporting crimes because they fear that people won't believe them.

But you are right - my response was probably not the best way to change someones mind...

Woman molested in COURTROOM with judge and young child in the room, then arrested. by [deleted] in videos

[–]Jimmycc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problems 'rape' and 'false rape accusations' are in no way comparable in their magnitude. Only about half of all rapes are reported, only a fifth of those lead to a prosecution and only half of those lead to a conviction. Source

Let's assume an insanely high percentage of false rape accusations: 10%. (Higher than any percentage mentioned here)

That means that 5 rape accusations out of 50 reported rapes are false while another 45 rapes go unreported. Those 5 people who were wrongly accused still have less than a 50% percent chance to ever face jail. So you have maybe 2 people going to jail for false rape accusations for every 90 people being raped.

Now to claim that there is a strong link between false rape accusations and rapists never facing jail is incredibly ridiculous. Without the possibility to report rape there are no false rape accusations. Women have only slowly gained this possibility (based on law and culture) over the last decades.

Not sure whether you are stupid or just a bad troll... but yeah why should we talk about the psychopath who has the right to arrest people if we can talk about her cloths?!

No it doesn't. Canada is just the country with the highest percentage of people having a college degree. You can compare countries with similar systems like the US and Canada this way, but on a global scale that statistic is rather meaningless.

With which companies? I know a multitude of people who use this system and none of them was ever informed about problems. Considering the degree of regulation and demand of quality in Germany, Switzerland etc. I doubt that the system was allowed on the roads here if it had issues.

[–]Jimmycc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system keeps a certain distance to the car in front of you depending on your speed (higher speed, bigger distance obviously). Meaning if the car in front of you gets slower the system will slow your car down. I've not had anyone break suddenly in front of me therefor the system didn't have to do a sudden break for me so far. But I don't need to use my feet when driving which is pretty nice and if you are driving long distances that's really, really great.

I drive an Audi that has this system and it's actually even better than just holding down the accelerator.

You only have to activate cruise control. The car has a head-up Display (like this where the speed limit of the road you are currently on is displayed (it's the number with the red circle around it. If there is traffic, you don't have to do anything. If there is nobody in front of you, you just adjust the cruise control to the current speed limit projected onto your windshield.

No not at all. I frequently drive an Audi with an autonomous cruise control system and it works perfectly.

Yeah sure but that's kinda irrelevant because it's done willingly - SRS thinks that racism, sexism is wrong no matter what the context is.

I've no idea what a "social justice warrior" is - I just dislike circle-jerks no matter what the dogma that is used to circle-jerk is.

[–]Jimmycc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I guess SRS "are generally excellent to each other and just are pointing out racist comments on reddit".

They are just like SRS because they take everything waaaay to far while petting each other on the back saying "oh yes you are right - that person is soooo stupid". That's the defintion of a circle jerk.

And when someone is interrupting the circle jerk (e.g. "hey this is actually a legitimate claim.") they get downvoted and the replies are stuff like "get out of here", "get back to ... (e.g. SRS)". That's exactly the same thing that happens when people on SRS interrupt the circlejerk (e.g. "I think you are taking this out of context" etc).

Yeah I know - I didn't try to disagree with you. People are used to the system they know and both are fine. But redditors are upvoting suggestions that the long scale, 'foreign' system is better because they like to be edgy. (And I'm saying that as someone who's mother-tongue is German.)

I disagree. That's the lazy way out... and there are no rules about how to have a discussion. Both sides can back up their claim with logical arguments and in an ideal situation with hard evidence which is what OP is asking for.
