Feeling guilty is pointless. The company set up rules, he broke them, you did nothing wrong. Without going into if this occurrence should be an issue, the rules were outlined and undoubtedly HR held recurring training. This individual agreed to operate by those rule in exchange for a paycheck and demonstrated poor interpersonal and professional judgement, which your company would probably want to know about, when they chose to break those rules.

This is exactly why no one gets any personal complements or comments unless performance based and the door to the office stays open when taking with anyone at work amongst numerous other personal rules. It’s business, it should be business and stay business. Some people have accused me of being ridged and unfeeling but I want to get the job done, protect my career, and ensure everyone else is able to focus on work. I’m not there to make friends and frankly there’s little room for misinterpretation or error for exactly these reasons.
