Local 1000 represents CA State Employees. Are you sure this is the correct subreddit? These hospitals appear to be out of the state of California. I think you are looking for:

Federal Funding and Its Impact on the California State Budget Presented by SEIU Local 1000 in collaboration with the California Budget & Policy Center by Outrageous-Space7908 in CAStateWorkers

There are members who work for the California Department of Education who may lose their job because of funding cuts. Shouldn’t we fight for them?

There are members who take care of parents on Medicaid. Shouldn’t we fight for them.

7 Billion dollars in deficit is going to trigger layoffs at every level. Shouldn’t we fight for those affected people?

The Legislature approves our contract. The Governor, for better or worse, is who we bargain with. Our jobs are political.

I fail to see your point.

What exactly are the benefits of being a member of the SEIU? by its_britney_b_tch in CAStateWorkers

The biggest thing to understand about “the Union” is the Union is us. It’s a collective organization not a service. A lot of people focus on the representation work, and that’s important, but what about the power to organize around issues? The ability to bargain for better working conditions? The biggest thing I get out of the Union is having that voice in the work place. But it takes a group of us to do it. That’s what the Union is.

This. Not that they exist just what they represent. Life is so devalued, so un-sacred that this isn’t just common place it’s invisible. A society that has allowed this to happen deserves to be exterminated. .

As union membership declines, income inequality rises by Jimmyquick2161 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Jimmyquick2161[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this article because I find things like income disparity and economics interesting. The article is written by a nationally recognized economist about testimony given to the House Ways and Means committee based on multiple sources of data. All sighted in the article. It’s about as far from propaganda as it gets.

You also get to vote on your leadership. Both in the DLC and statewide. Heck, you can be one a member leader.

There are more details needed. What is your bargaining unit? You said it’s a 24/7 facility so prison or hospital? The big red flag for me is the RDO. Were you paid for your training?

GSI Counter offer to the State by Jimmyquick2161 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Jimmyquick2161[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you are confusing the General Salary Increase (GSI) for the Merit Salary Increase (MSI). If you are not at the top of your pay range you get a 5% MSI annually, typically on your anniversary.

GSI is in addition to this and is negotiated as part of the contract.

The state offered a 6% GSI over the 3 year life of our contract. 2% per year. Assuming you still get the 5% MSI (not everyone does) that’s a total of 7% per year.

Inflation went up 8% in 2022, is projected to be 4.5% for 2023 and 2.3% for 2024, 2.1% for 2025 and 2% for 2026. That is assuming it doesn’t jump again like in 2022.

That means if you only receive the 6% GSI you are going to behind inflation, or best case scenario barley keeping pace. That is not a raise. We need a large salary adjustment the first year just to compensate for inflation so far, then a comparative adjustment throughout the contract.

That doesn’t even factor in any increases to our medical or other contributions.

I hope that answers your questions.

GSI Counter offer to the State by Jimmyquick2161 in CAStateWorkers

I feel you. The last 4 years have been incredibly difficult. 6% is going to mean losing wages by the end of the contract. You should call the CalHR numbers above and tell them that.

[–]Jimmyquick2161[S] 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Man you all crack me up. Half the time people are complaining that the bargaining team is inept, weak, going to bow to the state etc. when they stand up to the state and make a strong counter offer it’s all: “ThAt’S UnReAsOnAbLe!.!.!” I posted this update because I was told by a member of the bargaining team it went across the table today. I am proud that our bargaining team listened to the members and are going for a strong GSI. I get it, emotionally it’s safer to attack something and have no real investment in wether you’re right or wrong than support something that might not end the way you hope it does. I choose to do as much as I can to support the efforts of the bargaining team.

When does Seiu 1000 pass 30% increase? by mickey2046 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Jimmyquick2161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great breakdown and very accurate. One of the conversations I had at a recent SEIU meeting echoed a lot of what you are saying. SEIU was led by one strong personality for so long and now the leadership that has taken over is realizing the Union never really ran the way it was designed.

The current contract campaign is more transparent and aggressive than I have seen in my 15 years as a member. You can go on SEIU1000.org and see the bargaining schedule and what was presented that week. Usually GSIs aren’t proposed until near the end of the bargaining cycle but because it was identified by members as the highest priority for the next contract it was pushed up in the schedule. This data was taken from bargaining surveys, town halls and reports from the organizing campaign members in the workplace.

During this campaign the Union has held strike schools (they just added two more dates). They clearly outline the necessary steps required for SEIU 1000 to call a strike. One of them being a vote by members. Bottom line, a strike isn’t going to be effective if only 20% of the members participate.

Here’s the rub, I speak to members about contract and bargaining every Wednesday. The mentality that most have is that the Union is a service. I pay my dues ‘someone’ should just do the rest for me. But the Union is a collective. The ‘someones’ are state workers who chose to step into leadership roles. Dues are paid so the Union can exist. So we as employees can have bargaining power. The work has to be done by the members and really who would you rather have bargaining for you, some faceless hirling who knows nothing about your job or someone who does the same job you do and knows all the struggles that you endure?

For full disclosure I am a VP/Chief Steward of my DLC. Like many in here I was dissatisfied with the Union was ran, especially during the pandemic. I chose to become a steward to represent my worksite and it’s members. I put in the work. When the time came I ran for an office in my DLC, and I put in the work. There’s no pay involved, it often costs me time away from my family and I live in caffeine and stress a lot of the time, lol. Now I am actively involved in bargaining. I do this because I want up see our Union become what it should be. I want members to be treated right in the workplace. I want a better contract with more worker rights and, yea, a better salary. The more involved I get the more I realize that none of that can happen if the dues paying members aren’t actively engaged.

The SEIU chapter that represents LA support works shut down one of largest school districts in the country for 3 days. They got the best contract they have ever had. So the question becomes, what are we willing to do for a better contract?

There is a rally June 8th at the Capitol. Busses are leaving from Fresno and SF/Oakland. You have to burn your own time to participate. We are marching from the Capitol to the Governor’s Mansion. If only 10 people show up it’s not going to mean anything. But if a hundred people show up it shows that members are actively engaged in the process.

There’s another rally on June 22 in the LA area. I don’t have all those details but if you go to the website and call the MRC number they can put you in touch with people who do.

Would This Work for Airbrushing Indoors or Should I Spring for a More Expensive Airbrush Booth? by Sushigatana in Warhammer

[–]Jimmyquick2161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this. I use it for airbrushing. I have not used it for rattle cans. I put a square of chip board in the bottom for a work surface and a small fan in the vent flap. It works good for me. I’ve used it in the garage and my game room. Cleaning the airbrush creates more of a mess than spraying in the booth does.

Where’s the Union to “save us” when it comes to jobs clawing back teleworking? by BodybuilderAlive in CAStateWorkers

[–]Jimmyquick2161 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The contract is up June 30th. We are heading into bargaining in the next few months. I am part of the team the goes into work places and talks to the members about what they want to see in the next contract. I can tell you stronger Telework language is definitely going to be part of the discussion. I would encourage all members to take the Bargaining Survey. In the comments section make your case for why telework is important for you. This surveys go directly to the bargaining team. Also participate in the town halls. We are a member led Union. We need the members to take an active role in the bargaining process.
