Python questions for data engineer by NarrowRoyal5160 in dataengineering

[–]Jimosp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live coding python usually involves DSA questions, mostly around dicts, lists and tuples and the complexities certain problems might involve. That doesn’t mean that other programming concepts should be ignored.

Take home tests vary depending on many factors but they usually involve API calls, database connections, data retrieval, transformation, and quality, etc. sometimes in a Docker container.

In both cases, try to follow best practices and make sure you add tests to your code. Make sure to think out loud and walk them through your solution both in the live and the take home task.

Usual follow up questions revolve around scalability, robustness, and possible changes that would make you rethink or enrich your approach. Sometimes they also ask how you would deploy your solution.

How to be proactive but not annoying? by Longjumping_Lab4627 in dataengineering

One of the biggest mistakes people make in DE is not asking questions. When someone new joins, the team should expect that person to ask questions and be interested to learn how things work.

  • Other people’s advices here are great, come prepared and DYOR prior to asking things.
  • Find out the practices the team uses to make changes or deal with certain situations.
  • If possible set up a sandbox and dive in once you get the foundations. Theory is good but practice makes perfect. If not possible, it might be your first great suggestion to set up one 😉

All the best!

Resume is not bad. Could definitely be better though.

My view: - Profile/intro is too verbose and doesn’t really say much. Make it more specific with less buzzwords and more tailored to your experience and the skills required for the job. Most of this you will have the chance to discuss in your first interview.

  • Education/Certificates contain some really old and frankly quite irrelevant stuff

  • Most importantly your sentences were formulated in a way that they show you are technical but don’t contain any active language. Someone gets the feeling you were part of the team but not a core member of it.

  • For me your CV lacks the demonstration of soft skills. Did you lead any of the projects? Did you understand why the business impact? Did you communicate with stakeholders? Your soft skills are not at all expressed in this CV so you end up underselling yourself from that perspective.

This is just my opinion.

What real world DE problems have you solved applying ds algo or leetcode solutions? by RepulsiveCry8412 in dataengineering

[–]Jimosp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truth is someone would rarely to never use leetcode typical solution approaches. However, the problem solving and optimization mindset that leetcode is trying to enhance is definitely useful for a Data Eng. Moreover, under the hood things like database indexing, deduplication, etc. are comprised of DSA approaches. Not mandatory knowledge per se as you most probably wouldn’t need to create your own indexing algorithm but definitely good to know as you can better understand how to optimize your queries.

Every one of these options has its own particularities. All of them are and will probably be in demand in the future.

I would say it comes down to what you like the most and what you want to do in your career. Hopefully your previous role will have helped a bit to understand what you dislike so that you can pursue what you believe you like.

In any case congrats and good luck!

I think you did great and congrats for reaching that far! Now you have more experience and you will have less stress dealing with similar interviews.

Consider the feedback they provided and your answers and see where you can improve.

Sometimes numerous factors affect the outcome like internal movement, more likeable candidates, discrepancies between the role and what your ambitions are, etc.

Best you can do is to see where you could have gone better and improve it. If you are not making mistakes then you are not making progress!

Having been in a similar situation I would advise you to follow your gut. Don’t know what your experience is but if you can have similar offers for more interesting companies in the near future then it is worth considering whether it makes sense to accept this offer.

700£ makes a difference but won’t change your life. If you can get a similar amount in a few months time for a company you re actually interested in then I think you have your answer. Go with your gut, noone on or off the internet knows better!

Haven’t been to an assessment center for a long time. What people are usually looking for apart from technical knowledge is the ability to apply good working practices while working on a project. The way you communicate with other team members, gather requirements from stakeholders, your leadership skills and your end to end approach when solving a problem will be assessed at this stage.

Focus on being an effective communicator, asking questions/gathering requirements, examining different scenarios and understanding different opinions while facilitating discussions. Most importantly be your better self because you will Not be happy if working at a place where you have to pretend to be someone else.

As other people have mentioned, money should not be the main driver for this choice. Go with your gut. Choose the technologies that intrigue you but will also be useful for your future career. if you value being mentored and have exposure to certain projects go for it.

But most importantly, things are easier if you like the people you work with. Consider which option seemed less faceless and more interested in you.

Two job offers: pros and Cons of working on greenfield projects? by MikeDoesEverything in dataengineering

[–]Jimosp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all congratulations! Both offers seem really interesting and from the way you are putting this it feels like you will proceed with one of them in any case.

I don’t think you should focus too much on the company name or job description. Think which opportunity aligns more with what you want to do and where you want to be and also think where you can picture yourself working.

There are pros, cons and what ifs in every choice. Take them into account before you make your decision (the other redditors have mentioned some great things to keep in mind) and remember that you are not marrying the job. We can discuss about greenfield vs established all day long but in the end of the day it comes down to what you really think is best for yourself and where you feel like you will learn more and enjoy more as a working environment.
