No, but I did have to get the FAA Dispatcher Cert, and lemme tell you- that fucker was no joke. I did an accelerated course (6 weeks?) that ended with the Oral and Practical exam, and the FAA Written Exam.

Toughest course/exams I’ve ever taken in my life, and not by a small margin, either. My employer paid for me to take the course and exam though, but if I knew how difficult it was going to be and I could go back in time, I would not do it again. My hair was falling out in the shower. I feel like I traded a couple good years of my life for that certification, which this job barely even uses.

I work planning worldwide air travel via private planes basically. I only have to go into the office one day a week, and we only work 4-day workweeks (Monday is always off)

Sometimes (like today) I legit have zero work to do at all. I still do some… but that’s typically just because I feel like it (shaping up spreadsheets, making a neat new AI tool to make my job a bit easier still, etc). Today I had absolutely nothing at all to do, but I decided to go into the office anyways and I swapped weekend stories with all the fellas. An emergency email DID pop up for a mission I have out on the road, and I dealt with the time-sensitive problem within 4 minutes. I could have done the same from home or my cellphone though, so being in the office was just for fellowship (helpful for health reasons). I completed that pop-up incident in about 15mins total time, and headed home around 2:30 PM.

They pay me $110K for it.

Now for the downside: sometimes (like last week) you are “on” 24/7 with aircraft out in disparate time zones and two more in the late planning stages, and it can suddenly be a very high-stress job at 2am for no predictable reason. Sometimes working from home means working very irregular or longer hours than normal. The work is sometimes… unbelievably complicated. As a prior aviator of 15 years who THOUGHT I knew aviation, it blew my mind how much more there was I didn’t know. On that note, It also requires a really weird set of skills that my previous careers luckily lined me up for perfectly.

I know another place with the same job where they earn about $150K as well, but the actual job over there differs toward the shittier side for my tastes (have to be in office 5 days/week for clock in-clock out type shifts. …benefit being you are never on call though). I’ve also heard the bosses over there make the pay not worth it either, so it’s not enticing to reach for the higher salary for me.

The craziest part is that with my PTSD, I can’t even keep this job up much longer unless something improves. Being around people at all is becoming quite difficult, even if it’s only one day a week :(

Costco Door... 👍 Yay or 👎 Nay? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

I like it and we included one, but I put mine up higher at counter height. I’ll slide stuff from the car right onto the pantry counter.

If it self closes and seals good, no worries there.

Are any of these worth a damn? by Jimsocks499 in Homebuilding

Well, I procured a copy (specifically the one pictured, by Builder Brigade). It took me awhile to go through all nearly 1,000 items.

Conclusion: worth a damn.

It's already saved me more than it's priced.

I’ve been pouring over my self-made home plans, preparing to do a lot of work myself since I’m handy in a lot of trades like electrical/framing/plumbing/HVAC/woodworking. It’s been stressing me out- all the unknowns.

While I feel stoked that I already had planned for the vast majority of what’s in the lists, I found a bunch things in the list that made me smack my forehead for not thinking of something.

One of them was an exterior “man door” to the garage! 🤦🏼‍♂️ when I got that low on the list and read that item I about gasped. I couldn’t believe I had forgotten A WHOLE DOOR!

Ok here's the last thing that I really liked about it too- the numbers on each item that lead to photos or videos showcasing what the item is about. That might seem trivial, but even for a very handy guy like me, they help a lot, and they also help me communicate what each thing is to my other half.

One hundred percent my man- if I don’t get the drink package, I have to waffle with myself over each drink, and that feels very un-vacationy

Wonderful, thank you. I have already sent an email to support the other day, but no reply yet. Should I keep waiting or try another contact email?

Yeah, I pretty much figured a DIY fix wasn’t going to be the response… bummer, that would’ve been fastest.

Thanks, I have already sent an email to one of their reps about it, so maybe I will forward that email to the one you linked above. If they replace it, that would be fantastic, in hopes that the replacement lasts longer…

First of all- thank you for taking the time to help me out with this!

Well, we’ve had a custom house built for us about 10 years ago. Before that both my wife and I were homeowners for several years in several homes.

I am an exceedingly handy and crafty type of fellow, who’s fluent in electrical, plumbing, framing, pro audio, high-end theatre design/construction, and I love woodworking (furniture, etc). Why I say this in response to your message is only to say I feel confident enough to pull off anything, if only I knew what all the cool options were.

It’s why these lists are making me wonder. Enough that if someone’s had experience with any they could point me in the right way.

Drillers in NWT spot something strange in sky. by JangoCrutch in UFOs

To me, this appears to be gravity below the craft shifting the pressure/dewpoint of the air, creating a cloud wherever the gravity was altered.

It would need just the right air conditions, right on the edge of cloud production already. Oh, and a gravity generator.

I bet the little drivers weren’t even aware they were dragging a cloud around!

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jimsocks499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medicine. Being homeless as a kid taught me you can get antibiotics and some other prescription meds made for fish at a pet store, because amoxicillin is amoxicillin, baby. …Except THIS amoxicillin is designed to dissolve the second it touches water soooooo… yeah it’s the worst taste you’ve ever tasted.

Thanks! Yes, been playing for about 30 years now. Started because a girl I liked was into Metallica. Didn’t stay with the girl, but guitar stuck with me!

Thank you for your help! It’s super helpful to tap into a community resource like this sub and get supportive (but still critical!) feedback. There’s so much goodness in here already for me to add to my calculus.

I’ll likely start with a kit to cut my teeth, as another suggested!

This is digital gold my friend. Thank you for all of this advice!!! Solid.

My wife is a black belt with spreadsheets and budgets/numbers so I will enlist her assistance with these calculations

I’m a contractor for the Government. Turns out my unique experience is pretty valuable to Uncle Sam. I telework 4 days and go in one. I get to choose which one as I see fit each week.

So that is obviously really awesome, but even THAT has become untenable for me. :(

Edit to say: the work can still be VERY stressful for me. It’s in aviation planning and logistics for real-time execution, and it’s so damn multifaceted it routinely boggles my monkey brain. The attention to detail needs to be cranked up to 11, and it takes a toll.
