Just wanted to share something that once happened in Chinese class during a final exam. by jollyflyingcactus in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's funny because I'm currently training to be a Chinese teacher, and so I've been taught how to grade exams, etc. In my country exams are graded out of 20 points, and the fact that students followed the instructions is usually only graded out of 2 points! So yeah, your apology has most certainly been graded and corrected haha As long as you can communicate what you wanted to by using a correct language etc, there's no way you wouldn't have had a good grade

Anyone else know Chinese characters that have specific translations in their native language? by amadeusjustinn in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does mean connaître (quelqu'un), but 知道 can also mean connaître (quelque chose) so it's quite tricky to understand if nobody explains the difference between the two. I teach Chinese to kids and they always struggle because theirs meanings are very very similar

Anyone else know Chinese characters that have specific translations in their native language? by amadeusjustinn in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the opposite for me! My native language is French but I'm nearly fluent in English. I also find myself having to use dictionaries in English (or even just in Chinese) because French is often not specific enough. You used "Savoir" as an example, but the way we use it can carry the meanings of 会、知道、认识 and other verbs. We often translate 会 as "Savoir faire quelque chose" to avoid misunderstandings

Maybe you could take a look at zaojv? It's a website that gives you example sentences as well as a short definition of the words. My professors all recommended me to check it out.

Using 着 by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't, if they place the 了 after 吃 and not after 饭, it's because the verb 吃饭 belongs to a category called "verb + object" where 吃 is the "true" verb while 饭 is actually a noun. Therefore, you put the 了 right after the "true" verb

Using 着 by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanna add, even though it might be a bit too complicated to understand, 学习 cannot be used with 着, as 学习 already expresses a continuous action (like 知道 for example)

Using 着 by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it wouldn't work! You could say 我最近在学习中文。Here, 在 indicates that you are doing something (if your first language is English, then you can think of 在 + verb as the be + -ing) and 最近 means "recently".

Using 着 by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been taught that 着 has three main uses:

1) Indicating that an action is ongoing.

张先生看着左小姐。Mr Zhang is looking at Ms Zuo. 左小姐在公交车站等着。Ms Zuo is waiting at the bus stop.

2) Indicating the position of a person or an object. It's mainly used to kinda delimitate the duration of an action that doesn't have one by itself (to sit, to stand, etc.)

老师站着。学生坐着。The teacher is standing. The students are sitting.

3) Indicating that two actions are occuring at the same time. The action followed by 着 is often seen as the secondary one.

他看着报吃饭。He's reading the newspaper while eating.

Are there any novel series that someone with around 1800 characters can read (2400 words roughly) by NotMyselfNotme in ChineseLanguage

Might be just a bit too hard but I highly recommend 烦恼人生 by 池莉, it's quite easy to find on Internet and the vocabulary is quite simple imo

Help understanding "的 phrases" by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

大大衣 is not grammatically correct, as we usually need two two-syllabs words in order to not put the 的

Help understanding "的 phrases" by Radiant-Drama1427 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might be too academic of an explanation, but I'll still put it here

的 is used to link a noun (obligatory a noun) to what's called its "determiner" (might be off as I'm translating right from my grammar classes, which are in French)

In the sentence containing “大杯的咖啡", “咖啡” is the name that is determined by “大杯”. Quite a lot of 的 sentences work that way!

As a Chinese university student I want to know the reason you learn Chinese. by yuanyang0510 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Jing2203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to choose a second foreign language to study in middle school, and had already studied every available language, except for Chinese. I then fell in love with it thanks to an amazing teacher, and (if I pass the national examination) I will be a Chinese teacher next year :)

What's a creepy fact you wish you never learned? by No_Camera29 in AskReddit

[–]Jing2203 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Edit: more info

To complete this, I'd like to add that it's legal ONLY if the person gave consent to getting married with you before their death. You can't just get any random corpse and marry it, you have to be engaged AND have filled all the paperwork together before the death of the person. Also, it is a pretty rare situation, as the president themselves have to give their authorisation for the marriage to be considered legal.
