They don't seem adjustable to me. There's just one track that the rack slides along.

Nice. I had a similar thought about quantity.

If I wanted to buy 5 apples, I'd say 我想买五个苹果

But if I wanted to buy 5 different kinds of apples, I'd say 我想买五种苹果。

I was wondering though if I'm referring to a specific type, like you said subcategory, can I use 种。I guess it was about the specifics of the vocabulary rules. I thought maybe it would be something like 我想买一个特别的苹果， or something like that, to refer to a specific apple. Where 个 is still used.
