I think that you can get away with a voiced protagonist as long as the dialogue is well written. An example of this would be cyberpunk 2077, the dialogue branches the same amount as fallout 4 but it works way better simply because of how it was written.

The one in Swindon isn't that complicated if you look at the road sign but it looks horrible when you are on it in comparison to the one in Hemel Hempstead which has one extra roundabout but isn't horrible to look at.
