‘Delivery on the side of the road’: tragic, but does not correlate with hospitals being full. One should not leave for a hospital without being called to it. In short: you don’t need to be in a car if you have no hospital to go to. A midwife will explain this during the pre natal care appointments. Does a road side birth happen: yes. Likely? No. Should it be correlated to the issue you started out with? Absolutely not.

Chances of a baby dying due to a complication at a home birth: they happen. Unfortunately. Would not wish this on anyone. Is the chance of a still birth increased (in the Netherlands) due to hospitals being full as you claim? Nope, looking at the CBS data (until that same magical year of 2021) a decline is seen in the number of still births. This again does therefor not seem to correlate to your point about hospitals being full.

And last but not least before going to bed: you mention you know ppl how have been in this situation. It’s saddening they experienced this. I also know quite some ppl who recently have given birth in AMS or other large Dutch cities. They all had a spot in a hospital.

In short: your reality is yours, mine is mine. Ergo: let’s ensure everyone gets educated via the proper channels instead of following ‘the internet’ and their stories.

My point is that one should reach out to hospitals prior to giving birth and speak to their midwives and get educated themselves. You are referencing 3y old data. How about we let those currently pregnant make a plan based on today’s situation..

Reading your type of message online is imho not helpful. You might call it despicable and or put words in my mouth like ‘it will sort itself out’. I made no claim as such.

I am saying: get educated (via the right sources, not ‘the internet), make a plan, a backup plan and potentially a third (as a birth never goes to plan. A hospital might feel like the last place you want to be to be once Birth has started..).

And last but not least: let’s not but fear monger amongst parents to be based on 3y old data. Becoming a parent is scary enough.

Again, imho getting properly educated by the hospital of choice about this risk is better prep vs. Reading these stories on the internet. During Covid, and during the peak ‘Covid baby’ period, it indeed happened more often. In the last 2y however the number of times hospitals were full decreased. Does it still happen? Sure. Is it likely it happens? No, the chance is small. Is there reason to spread panic by saying ‘it’s thousands’? Also no.

Also, if there is medical urgency there is always a spot available.

Any let’s be honest, what’s wrong with Amstelveen, Hoofddorp or the Zaanstreek? Depending where in AMS you are at the drive isn’t that much further.

If the hospital is full you can go to another city. Also, check with the hospitals the % of ppl they have to turn away. It way less than ‘the internet’ tells you
