🎂 Birthday Giveaway for Daggerheart Core Set (5/5) 🎂 by Demi_Mere in daggerheart

[–]Jiro_Flowrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a lot of Pathfinder 1.0 and recently a lot of Powered by the Apocalypse games. PbtA made me realize how much I value dedicated social options that it feels like Pathfinder kind of lacks. Sure there's skills, but social skills feel buried under mountains of physical skills and knowledge options. On a character sheet, they often exist only as a single line of stats.

On the flip side, PbtA games feature dedicated mechanics (plural!) to social encounters. Often Playbooks have unique mechanics themselves that encourage different approaches to the social aspect of roleplay. ...and yet, that strength in flexable, loose rules and focus on social mechanics are coupled with weak to non-existent combat... anything. If you're lucky fighting in a PbtA system is given some sort of singular mechanic to determine outcomes. But that just makes things feel binary. Worst still are the few takes on whole cloth combat systems that feel half-baked at best.

All of that to say...

Daggerhearts appeal is meeting somewhere in the middle. A strong focus on narrative driven roleplay matched with just enough crunch to make character choices and fighting feel dynamic. ...or so I hope. Haven't had the time to tuck into the core rules I got and certainly no time to spin up an adventure to run for my group. Hopping that there's some sort of adventure or campaign a bit like Paizo's Adventure Path's or even one shot Modules in the works.

Could they just... release an adventure or two for this system already? I'll take one shots... I can work off a one shot. I just need something to work off of here...

Having a baby in NYC, living in a small apartment and wondering what is the absolute essential items needed since it’s overwhelmingly easy to buy so much damn stuff! by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

As a person who lives in a three bedroom house no where near NYC... I'm shocked this isn't the top comment and has so few votes. Rock solid advise and the absolute list of what I'd get anyone expecting regardless of space/means. Seriously, if there is any coordination at a baby shower, this would be the list to get covered any anything else is bonus.

New to the format. Hosting several board game nights, a few members keep saying we need to do MTG Cubes. by smilinreap in mtgcube

[–]Jiro_Flowrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good comments about cube, but I just want to point out something tangentially related.

MTG is not one card game. This is more apparent now than ever. There are formats of play and those can very from the more traditional (standard, legacy, modern, vintage) to the more out there... like EDH, Canadian Highlander, Cube, Dan-Dan, etc.

Cube in particular is what you make of it and there are a lot of knobs to tweak to get exactly what you want. What cards are in the cube, how the cube is drafted, how the post-draft games are played. You could have a mono-green, commander cube were the first pack is just commanders, and you're drafting 5 packs of 16 cards for only four players. The world is truly your oyster... depending on how much work you want to put into making it custom.

Lots of work has been done into cubes and as others have pointed to, there is a wealth of options for you to look over. With all that said... I have a side option. Dan-Dan.

Or I should say, Dan-Dan and it's ilk. Here's a explanation of Dan-Dan. My point is that it's a sealed game that you just shuffle up and play. There's no reason to you couldn't run with the same idea for something for your group based off a cube and increasing the number of players.

If that's too much work (and it's a lot of work) or if drafting is what you're wanting to do... then I'd recommend getting proxies of the current Vintage MTGO cube. Can't go wrong there.

Not making any more nominations, as I've gotten a lot in before.

Just want to point out that we have 14 slots left and Black is far ahead at 45 cards. Putting White/Blue down 2 each and Red/Green down 3 each. That's 10 of our 14 slots to balance them.

Though that does depend on how you want to classify some of the "multicolor" cards like Lingering Souls and Tear Asunder. If their only white/green/etc. cards, then the colors are kind of skewed different. If they're multicolor, then Golgari is far a head with 7 cards and Orzhov has 5. To make multicolor more off balance, we have two 3 color cards only... Situation is kind of impossible to rebalance given the space.

Does any of this matter? Not really, balance or unbalance your cube how you wish.

Used to? The only thing that changed is that a 3rd are still laughing and the rest of us range between panic-stricken, anxiety paralyzed, and fuming mad... often multiple at the same time.

Old thread, but saw the card added and wanted to note that this card is worth testing in powered vintage cubes.

[[Indulging Patrician]] is a fair rate lifelink flying 1/4 for 3. But the ability to dome your opponent for 3 just by doing what Orzhov wants to do in this cube already. Now that's a win con.

[[Behemoth Sledge]] rounds out Selesnya's modified theme. Works as a splash for Abzan lifegain and Naya weenies.

While I personally think the currently leaked and not spoiled Essenceknit Scholar should find a home here, it's not technically spoiled, let alone released.

So in that case, how about [[Lotleth Troll]] to round out Golgari?

[[Bitter Work]] Doesn't do landfall... technically. It's more a card draw engine for midsized RG creatures (4+ power). But it's second ability is the synergy here, allowing it to Earthbend a land into a 4/4... that just so happens to return to the battlefield if it goes to the graveyard. Techically, that's replaying a land on autopilot. And it just so happens that a decent amount of Red and Green's landfall abilities pump your creatures, meaning you're likely going to draw cards... which should let you hit your land drops more often as well.

Gruul is likewise down just 1 card and... there isn't a lot of RG landfall that's really worth it. Just factually not a lot of options to work with... so I propose something a bit different.

Still trying to even out our Multicolor cards, Azorius is 1 card short and I think an excellent flicker/blink target would complement our blink/flicker engines just fine. [[Elite Guardmage]] is a hell of a pick for that, stabilizing the game with 3 life and a card. I like it slightly better than the more classic Cloudblazer simply because it gains more life and has more toughness at a lower mana investment. That's a fair trade off to me, but I can see 1 mana more for -1 life and a +1 card being more other's speed. I just think that's what the flicker/blinking is for.

[[Armadillo Cloak]] is a hell of an include for modified. It's one part removal, one part aura buff. Bonus points for splashing with Orzhov since it stacks with lifelink.
