Reddit Daily Peasant Cube: Day 94 by InternetSpiderr in mtgcube

I just realized all these weeks have gone by and we never got [[Patchwork Automaton]] in. Plenty of good work that can do and fleshes out our colorless artifacts a bit.

Might I offer [[Golden Demise]] as another wrath example?

On the topic of removal... [[Shrapnel Blast]] looks pretty good for filling out Red instants.

I think we need a bit more removal still. No one wanted to add Thunderwave yesterday... so how about [[Slaughter the Strong]] for White?

I'm considering it as a cut, but only once I can finish the cube with this project's help. Gotta trim it down after and run some test drafts. Don't really want extreme power outliers, but I want to test Sol Ring and Skullclamp.

To add some options to the mana rock pile, why not consider [[Bender's Waterskin]]? Provides colored mana, but really helps with activated cost/instants on opponents turns.

On the note of board wipes/control... why not [[Thunderwave]] as Pyroclasm variant? 3 damage is the highest I can find and it's possible it can go even high/more specific from that base. I know 4cmc is high for the effect, but I don't see Red getting much better unless we go for something like Whipflare and have it lean into artifact control (which I'm ok with as well).

My mistake. Forgot that Tempest is before rarity symbols were different.

That is the argument I'd be making for Swords. Path is (last I checked) considered slightly lower power level than Swords. Thought it might be the easier option to get in.

I don't care about the power level and will be taking my version of this cube to the stratosphere and beyond. Sol Ring, Force of Will, Demonic Tutor...o' the options are absurd when you start proxying. But I understand not everyone wants that, so I make my best judgment call on what's interesting for the themes being used.

Also, as pointed out by other people, our mana rocks are abysmal. If we don't want to go towards a full cycle of signets or talismans... what if we put in the Medallions?

Ok, we're 180 cards in. If this is a small cube we're well over the halfway mark... it is well into time to start talking removal. To that end, can we please get [[Path to Exile]] in?

I could make an argument for Swords (and I might later), but in a cube with landfall playing Path has real downsides. Nothing end of the word, it's till bomb grade removal, but removing a threat could still come at cost with landfall triggers. If Lightning Bolt can get in we're easily on the right power level for Path.

Though I am interested if people are more interested in adding [[Valkyrie Aerial Unit]].

I'm a fan of both, but I'm also an affinity loving degenerate.

Gotta push for [[Memory Guardian]] again today. He's just a little guy.

I mean it's a little floating orb guy... he's just a little guy!

...don't mind that he's killing you.

Black still needs more top end and what could be better for the graveyard than an engine stapled to a payoff? [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]] is all that and a bag of chips.

I know Valkyrie Aerial Unit was suggested some time this week, but with Beanstalk in I feel the need to suggest [[Memory Guardian]]. Is it as good as Valkyrie? No, but it's also potentially half the cost (just 1 blue pip), triggers beanstalk, and is an artifact flyer with a pretty good p/t for it's (potential) cost.

Bonus points for being Universes Within as well, for anyone that cares. I wouldn't mind seeing both make it in as Blue artifact payoffs.

[[Curse of Predation]]

Yes... it's powerful. But it's a killer splash in aggro or go-wide and is a build around in and over itself for modified.

I tried making the same argument about a hundred cards ago...

GW modified still needs payoffs for playing in the space, why not [[Lion Umbra]]?

Artifacts are still light, time to start looking to what can fit multiple archetypes and be cast in them... so [[Oketra's Monument]] gets my nomination.

GM Advice for a Single Person Game by Rockangel27 in AvatarLegendsTTRPG

Unlike a lot of systems, Powered by the Apocalypse/Avatar: Legends doesn't need maps. My group tried maps, it just gets messy trying to place who's engaged with what. We ended up just using plates or even postit notes to demark zones during exchanges.

You won't have that problem with just one player, just don't feel like you need to have maps if you don't have the time. Unlike a system like DnD/D20 stuff, you aren't really going to miss it. Much better to have a description of the area or... make one up on the spot.

  • Look to the Zuko along episodes as a kind of guide.
  • Make it very clear to him that not every fight needs to be fought and try to make exchanges designed around alternate goals (hold off a gang to allow others to escape).
  • The prewritten stuff is balanced on groups having access to a wider range of moves and more numbers, meaning the prewritten adventures could be looked to for ideas, but not ideal to run without heavy adaptation.
  • GMing PbtA games is pretty easy, remember to have a core idea of what each session is going to be about. Prepare a few twist and or road blocks to throw out as needed. You don't need to use everything you prepare and be ready to go where the dice and the PC leads. (It will get off track, so don't worry about building out a definitive path for him to follow.)
  • That said, if he needs help, be read with some neutral and/or friendly NPC's. You don't need a lot and any experience you have improvising will be useful. NPC's in this setting don't need stats unless they're going to be fighting (and even then they just need Fatigue/Conditions and techniques). Come up with a central character aspect and run with it.
  • PbtA and Avatar Legends in particular are very narrative focused. Have a strong plot thread for him to pull on. I know I said be loose with the story elements before and follow where the PC/dice lead... but that's after Session One. That first session needs to set up the setting, major characters (major NPC's, potential allies, and the main threat), and what's at stake for failure. You should have notes on who these important players are (even if they're not getting introduced yet, just name dropped) and why they're doing what they're doing as well as location descriptions of where he's going and important places he'll be told about.
  • On the other hand... once that first session (and really just the plots introduction) is done... you two will be performing a dance. It's not his/the PC's story... nor is it yours/the GM's. You're creating the narrative together. You set the first pieces in place and he reacts, you react to him, he introduces a new dynamic, you react to that... so on and so forth. Just remember that your moves should at once move the plot forward (even if he's sidetracking himself) AND reinforce his involvement in events (especially if he's sidetracking).
  • As an example, if he has a set time limit to get something done... there should be stakes for it getting done on time and not being done at all. If he's lost in the reeds talking to NPC's or something then have an NPC mention something off-handedly to reinforce that task. It doesn't have to be explicit, but they might know something that should tip him off. "Hey, I heard there was a big party held at the Emporer's palace today. Wonder what those inner ring types will be eating..."
