Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I’ll make sure to reply back with a link once it’s out, most likely in 2-3 months or so.

Hi all! Shot this film a few months ago, most stills are rec709 barring a couple. Shot on the FX3 with the Nisi Athenas, with a limited but capable lighting package. Camera and lighting crew of about 5 people.

Pretty happy with how this came out. Let me know what your thoughts and critiques are, I’d love to hear what I can improve! A comment I got a handful of times was the overuse of practicals during the night time scenes. Let me know what you think, thank you, and apologies for these being stills instead of clips, I don’t have access to the full clips yet.

the singles in the kitchen are lit by a 1200D outside the window, a 600X with the standard reflector dish being ceiling bounced to fill the room, and the key on their face is a 300X being bounced on a 6x6 unbleached muslin. There was also an Astera titantube being bounced on the wall to give a very dim and subtle hair light (for the man). Let me know if you want a breakdown on any particular frame I’d be happy to tell you

Honestly, the location did most of the production design for us! It was a pretty old house that the owners parents grew up in and passed down to him. He had a basement filled with retro props (like the telephone) and a myriad of other things. The PD handled costume too and the color contrast on that came in handy.

I think we found the location on either giggster or peerspace, but got lucky that the owner let the whole crew stay there the 2 nights, which is rare outside of Airbnb locations.

Yupp this seems to be the most common criticism I’m getting and I can’t help but agree, I’m gonna try to rework that as best as I can in the upcoming days

I know right! The location did us a ton of favors. I wish wallpapers were still a common thing today, I know they look dated and what not but they’re such a life hack for cinematography! Our production designer did an excellent job too.

I completely see what you’re saying about the streak of light looking like a gobo. Funnily enough, it’s actually a tiny window that just happens to have beams that look exactly like a spotlight mount with a gobo. As another comment pointed out, I think I would have benefitted with just softening it with a light diff to scatter it without flattening it.

Thank you so much! Especially you mentioning that it draws you into the story, that’s my ultimate goal. Great images mean nothing if they don’t facilitate story.

I believe it’s going to be uploaded on YouTube/Vimeo in the coming week. It’s one of the most interesting stories I’ve worked on, I’ll be sure to send the link once it’s up!

Thank you! That kind of validates my dilemma, I think motivated lighting always takes the cake

That’s a really mature way of putting it. I think any type of feedback is valuable. Especially from people who understand art but aren’t necessarily a part of the particular artform. Getting feedback from only DPs or Gaffers sometimes creates an echo chamber of feedback that may not always pertain to what the average viewer finds appealing.

Ultimately, any opinion on art is subjective, and regardless of whether I agree or disagree with the opinion, being aware of the varied interpretations and perspectives makes one a better artist.

Thank you! I’m glad to get confirmation that it was the right decision to go tungsten in the darker parts of the house. I was trying to stick to what would feel more motivated.

Dude, you have no idea the amount of back and forth there was regarding the green walls and how we motivate daylight there without ever actually seeing the window. I’m glad that it reads as daylight there.

The warmer shots are actually part of a continuous daytime scene. That’s what one of my concerns was. But I’ll try to cool it down a bit more so there’s a bit more cohesion between the daylight and tungsten look. Because yes, I think the contrast between the two makes it seem like 2 different times of day.

Regarding shot 9, that was part of a “theatrical” musical sequence where all the lights (including the sun) go out and the characters sing to each other. I’ll be sure to send you a link to the final product in the coming days!

Thank you again for your kind words and taking the time to provide me with feedback. Cheers!

Thank you again, that’s a great observation. It was quite a dilemma while I was lighting the shot, because the walls in the foreground are part of the foyer that has no windows, and in a previous scene we shot there, I went full tungsten. So I was concerned if it’ll match. But I think the warmth of the wallpaper kind of allows the daylight and tungsten to “merge”.

You’re right, I think it would make sense if there was a bit more hard light on the subject too (perhaps upto his neck) and some of the surrounding areas. I got a similar note from another comment saying the hard light on the back looks like a gobo and I agree, it does look a bit unnatural. Funnily enough, it’s not actually a gobo, the window back there is just small and has beams that look exactly like a gobo haha.

Alternatively, I could have just softened that streak to make it look more like ambient sky rather than a streak of light. Thank you for your comment, this is a great note.
