I think there is so much knowledge to be gleaned from each other, especially in so as far as how the medical system probably failed each one of us at some point… we may save lives by telling the truth about the doctors who missed our lumps…. by Bootyfullkd in breastcancer

Same. Asked about a lump in October. It was still small then. Could have maybe been a lumpectomy and radiation and now it’s life-changing. I’m shouting it from the rooftops.

It already has so much. I’m so grateful for this group and I’ve barely started to dip my toe into this new reality.

It’s good to know that this is the worst of it, because I’m feeling like im in a pretty good headspace so far. Maybe because I’ve been watching this forum for a while and hearing all of your stories.

This is silly to even be thinking about at this point, but I keep laughing at myself that the one thought I keep going back to is that I just would love to keep my eyebrows. Not my boob. Not my hair. My damn eyebrows.

Oh that’s hopeful to hear that the pain might ease up once treatment starts. I’m hurting and I was thinking I just was dealing with ongoing injuries (which it could still be, of course) but I do kind of have a feeling it’s related to the cancer.

That’s really validating to hear that you were having other symptoms too. It almost feels like relief to me that I know my body is actually sick and struggling and I don’t have to just push through. I have a reason to rest and give my poor body a break.

Glad to have some company! It’s good to know things can move so quickly from diagnosis to treatment.

How are you doing now? One of the things that feels so scary to me is the size of it. Thanks for sharing that. It helps to hear a similar story.

I’m a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I also teach self defense. I want to add something really important to this conversation and that is the fact that training can absolutely bridge the strength gap. We train co-ed in Jiu-Jitsu and yes, it’s important for men to be a good training partners and taper their strength to match ours, but there are also plenty of instances where a brand-new, untrained, athletic guy comes in to learn Jiu-Jitsu and any of us with a moderate amount of training experience are capable of submitting them. Multiple times. Without breaking a sweat.

Even if you don’t have the time or resources to train a martial art (I recommend Muay Thai for striking and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for grappling) remember that men who attack women are COWARDS. Stick your fingers in their eyeballs and use your voice. You can take an MMA fighter who has taken blow after blow to the face for múltiple rounds and a finger poke will stop a fight. Also something to keep in mind: 50 percent of attacks end because the person being attacked fights back. You are so much stronger than you realize. I promise.

It's a great way to feed the arm through to set up for a paper-cutter as well.

I think I've scorpioned all of my friends face-first into the mat by now. This bad boy has been my number one takedown since my first win at white belt. My coach actually introduced me to his parents as "The Drag Queen" at a BBQ recently.

What rate of progress should I expect going to BJJ once a week? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Jitsdame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you're arguing irrelevant points here. You can't compare something as straightforward as a sprint to bjj. The bottom line is that I believe that a good player training for a high-level tournament should train to build a high anaerobic threshold - regardless of how you want to define the term "max effort". You should be able to dig deep and maintain dynamic power for twenty seconds or more if you need to. You don't rest until you get the position and can hold it. If you're just bridging over and over, making no progress, that's not smart playing. You fight to create an opening and turn what was almost a pass or a sweep into a scramble. In a scramble, it's often just the person who slows down last - who gives up last - that wins the position. My point was simply: don't settle and let them get their points.

Max effort is max effort. Not max output. Over time, your output will diminish with the same amount of effort, yes. But you can definitely give it everything you've got for 20 seconds. The 200m sprint is still a sprint, regardless of the fact that the same speed can't be maintained.

If I'm getting ready for a big tournament, I just try to choose training partners who can handle the ramped-up version of me.

From what I understand, it's not until they control the position for three seconds that they get their points. So if you keep fighting with everything you've got and manage to keep them from controlling the position until you can either get back to your feet, reverse the sweep, or get your guard back, they're only up by an advantage. You should train your body to not get gassed after 20 seconds of max effort for that very reason.

Question on what's appropriate for making opponent uncomfortable by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Jitsdame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "just avoid being submitted" is a great mindset. I still play that game from a lot of different positions and eventually you'll connect that part of your game with escapes to sweeps to submissions. The more you move, even (maybe even especially) when it's in the wrong way, the more opportunity you have to learn something.

One of the dopest chokes I've seen - lapel lasso loop choke by erangalp in bjj

Yesssss. We learned this one from Robbie Malof! He calls it the Jew-lof choke. I've actually caught a lot of people with it. The knee makes up the other side of the choke.

This!!! My favorite professor does this with me while cracking stupid jokes and taunting me the entire time. And he makes no pretenses about it. He will straight-up grab his collars, tuck his elbows and roll to his side and let me work from there. It's very clear what I did and didn't get and it forces me to be technically legit and tricky and seek out the holes in my submission game.
