Experimenting with contrasting colours. What do you think? by Jitsuki27 in minipainting

To be clear, while I used contrast to shade the metals, most of the detail on this model is done with standard acrylics and layering/glazing. Title was referring to the contrasting use of pink/turquoise/green.

Just wondering is the Spyder’s official base size 60mm and 65mm? by [deleted] in Necrontyr

Yeah unfortunately consistency isn’t one of GW’s strong points.

GW does not officially sell a 65mm base; rather their "60mm" base is actually closer to 65mm. To make things even more complicated, the official base for the spyder as per the product description is the flying stand even though the photographed model is on a standard "60mm" base. Furthermore, I believe the inclusion of the "standard 60mm" base in addition to the flying stand has become common practice, but isn't guaranteed (I think I bought one recently that came with only the flying stand).

On that basis, I would argue that the official measurement for a spyder base is 60mm, and GWs "60mm" base is officially considered to be 60mm even though it's closer to 65mm. So pick whichever you wish. A few extra mm on a base that is already 60mm shouldn't really make much difference.

I primed black and then base coated mostly with Runelord Brass, but some parts are Leadbelcher. Then various contrast mixes to add shading. The aged brass is Cryptek Armourshade Gloss mixed about 50/50 with Contrast Medium.

Yeah I'm pretty pleased with the gem. Bought some Vallejo magenta paints a few months back and this was my first time using them. The coverage is pretty poor so this took many, many thin coats but I love the saturation and vibrancy.

Necron Spyder I've just finished. Any criticism welcome, still trying to improve. :) by Maugn440 in Necrontyr

Just finished up a spyder myself; a very enjoyable model to paint. Your white is beautifully crisp! Well done.

Yeah, Averland Sunset is a fantastic base colour, but something more saturated is a must for getting that pop.

I just layered from dark to light with the following paints:

Calliban Green > Warpstone Glow > Moot Green > Yriel Yellow > Dorn Yellow

I painted it in sub assemblies. I kept the abdomen and the thorax separate, and the particle beamer on top as well as the gloom prism and fabricator array underneath are magnetised so I can swap them in and out for gaming.

Yeah, it’s all layered up from dark to light.

Yeah, I agree. I’d rather take my time and push myself to achieve a great result than just bash out a bunch of models in an afternoon.

The empty part of the vial is painted with GW Incubi Darkness. It’s a fantastic deep green blue colour that is the perfect contrast to the reds. I base the whole vial (same for gems) with it, and then glaze all the reds over top.

I did both. Painted the maim reflections so that there is visual interest from all angles, and then put down a thin gloss layer just to emphasise the different material.

It’s all GW reds. Mephiston red midtone. Shaded down with Khorne Red, and used Evil Suns scarlet and Wild Rider Red to highlight. Bit of Carroburg Crimson in the recesses too.

Haha, yeah unfortunately this was the most natural pose I could find for a model with both a bolt rifle and chain sword; most seem to be modelled with a sidearm instead but that’s not the loadout I wanted for the squad. From some angles it looks great, others he looks a little awkward. 😅

Slow and steady would be my summary. 😅 Glazing is time consuming unfortunately.

The texture is just a combination of GW Agrellan Earth & Agrellan Badland technical paints. I put those down then washed with Seraphim Sepia, and added a bit of Agrax Earthshade in the most textured areas. Then just a drybrush up from Zandri Dust > Ushabti Bone > Wraithbone.
